I've only been riding for the past 3 yrs so unfortunately missed out on a lot of the tracks of yesteryear mentioned(Depressing to know there used to be a really good track in Monroe which is a 30min drive for me).

One track i haven't seen mentioned that i really liked the couple times i made it out was Cadillac Ranch. They haven't had any ride days the past couple years and also have been hurt by neighbors/local politics but when they are open it's definitely worth the drive/checking out.

Yep, Cadillac Ranch is cool. Really shitty situation-family was looking to utilize their family farm for others’ enjoyment. Some asshole neighbor creates a stink and curtails their track. My understanding from the local rumor mill is that you could barely hear it (if at all) from his location, but he was supposedly some high and mighty person with the state (or tied to someone who was). Typical.
Cadillac Ranch is a bummer deal.

Their track is about as far down into their property (200 or 400 acres, don't remember which) as it can get and there's no way noise or dust was any real concern. Some people just can't stand others having a good time in western WA. Go to California and you have Perris Raceway right in the middle of a neighborhood as well as Starwest (Now called State Fair) across the street from a major housing development. PNW politics is rough on the moto crowd.

The fine topsoil silt was gnarly on an air-filter if it got dry, but the layout was fast and a bunch of fun. If they could get permitting and run it as a business, it would be an awesome PNW race track for sure.

That's the Fossil Bowl.

At least they only run it one direction these days.

Back in the day (maybe when you were around) they would switch directions every other day for practice..... without changing any jump faces or landings. Just send 'er.... Nothing like steep faces and steep landings to give you a permanent fear of coming up short on jumps.

yeah, I guess I should've connected the two. I probably went there around a dozen times but never when they were open. From what I remember it was just off the side of the road and in the middle of nowhere. They had some pretty serious jumps, I remember a huge 5th gear pinned double coming down the hill and some pretty cool step ups

As I recall, there was also a huge step-up that at the time (pre 4-stroke dominance era) only Craig Decker and one other guy had jumped. Craig’s might’ve been at one of the 4-stroke nationals even. Memory is fuzzy. I remember the Yamaha shop in Moscow had a pic of someone jumping it.
This would have been 1995 I was there.

Beat me there by a few years. Started at a different college, took a little time off then finished at WSU. Wish I’d have started there. Had a great time and met some great folks. Several are still friends.

I should make a Kickstarter to buy Burnt Ridge and run it with some kind of VIP charter-member blah-blah status for investors.

Think they'd permit a guy to build a machine shop on the property over there?

...Also, I'm currently in the WSU mechanical engineering program with a year left...

If it's the only "permitted MX track in the county" it sounds like it wasn't a land use/dispute issue. If it was as good/popular of a track as advertised I wonder why they decided to shut it down? Either way it's nice to see they're calling it out in the listing. Long shot the next buyer decides to make another run at it but glad to see the listing agent is at least planting the seed.

On a separate but related note, I can't believe 40 completely undeveloped acres in middle of BFE nowhere is going for a cool 3/4 mill.

Perhaps we could pool resources of everyone on this thread and make it a semi-private PNW-Vital members track? I'll go ahead and kick things off with a $10k pledge. Come on, who's with me?

Dirt looks amazing for this area...

Dirt was really good. Big uphills and downhills etc.

As I understand, the owners ran a full-time business as their primary livelihood and couldn’t do both anymore.

At the end, they didn't put the time into the prep and I think that turned a lot of people off to it as well as the fact that they didn't adopt any of the modern ways of communicating when they were open. When I'd tell friends we were meeting up at Burnt Ridge, they'd say "They're still open?" in disbelief.

It takes a lot of work to run a great track. It would be tough to do it while also running a business.

I'm a one-man design and machine shop out here in Kitsap...
I'd love to run a track, but I'd have to do it on the same piece of land as my regular business or I'd never make it. I only have just a little over five acres, so I do have a track, but it's too small to open it up to anyone but my very close friends.

Is there still a track at the Kitsap Airport? I currently live in S Kitsap, but haven't had a bike for a while. If we got 150 people to pony up $5,000 each we could make it private and hold open races here and there. I think the Club structure like Hanigan and Olympic is the way to go. that is what Euros mostly do, and it works better imho.

I'm a member up at OPMC, I like it, especially in the fall and the spring with some occasional winter rides.

There's a track behind the Bremerton National Airport. It's called MotoWest. They have some Wednesday evening practice during spring/summer and some Saturdays as well as a few race days during the year. It's 15 minutes away and although it's not great dirt, they've improved their prep a ton the past couple years.

I spent a year in Denmark and all of the tracks I went to were club andI wouldn't be surprised if all their tracks were. Nothing like riding a real track whenever you want and all you have todo is pitch in on the work and pay your dues. Both olympic and Hannegan have stood the test of time. It is a system that works if you can get enough involved initially tomato it happen.

Some time ago I asked the then-owner of a track I rode at frequently about his experience running it. He said that there’s a critical juncture with every track owner who starts small as a side project to their regular employment where they have to pick one. Otherwise both suffer due to the demands of both. Tracks are far, far more work than many realize. One thing that stuck with me was that he was a rider himself, and said he hadn’t ridden in almost a year because of the demands.

I’ve always wondered why there hasn’t been an attempt at a home development centered around track(s). They have them for full scale airports, RC aircraft fields, golf, and senior oriented activities. It certainly draws on a smaller enthusiast base, but seems viable. HOA dues could pay for track maintenance and upgrades.

Twas a Hannegan Mx regular for years, but that was years ago.. Is it any good these days?
I'm assuming not since no one has mentioned it.

My main track was the Ross's Oak harbor track,, which was pretty entertaining depending on the time on year..
Nowadays its little moto trail riding and a whole lot of Mt bikes..

I really just want to ride a mellow vet track.

Whidbey MX would suit your wish. I remember Ross’ place…entertainment for sure.

Hannegan isn’t (in my opinion) nearly what it was in the 90’s. Went downhill when they got the fill dirt from the excavation company from the road project that was full of rock and asphalt…

What always amazed me about hannegan (former member as well) was the fact that they would cheer what a “success” the flat track national was after losing 20k net, then bitch at the moto folks for 1500 in Cat rental/fuel when the track was prime, and a race weekend like PAC West netted 15-20k profit. It didn’t help that the bullshit Baja bugs and trucks would ruin the jumps, requiring hours of repairs, then they’d blame that cost on motocross.

Truly some backwards thinking there. That facility, had they focused on motocross, would’ve been a gold mine.

Despite growing up in Washington, I've only been to Hannegan once, for a race in maybe 2013.
There was nothing about that place or the way the race was run that made me want to drive that far again.
It certainly seemed that MX was an afterthought for the people running the place.

Whidbey Island is full of small rocks, but it's a non-issue. The track layout is safe, easy and fun for any skill.
I agree, drive right by Hannegan and going to Whidbey.

my last stint at Hannegan was to sign up for their Poker runs, (yes i'm hardcore) but instead ride the main track all day, and i remember having a fairly well prepped track almost to myself..

and if it were not for Thursday night series my wee little trophy room would not exist..

Well I'm feeling kind of depressed. I'm born and raised in the PNW and currently reside in the Portland area.
There are only a handful of tracks to ride and it seems like I'm running out of options:

Albany: It's just okay, I feel like the track doesn't flow as well like it used to. I wish they were open on Saturdays for practice and not just Wednesday. Some of us have to work...I do like how they till and water the track mid-day.

Riverdale: Another average track that just doesn't flow like it used to years ago. As of right now, track doesn't flow at all. I only ride it on Saturday because they prep the track beforehand. Also, only open in the winter.

Washougal: Obviously a world class national track, probably the best in the PNW region. Flows great and the dirt is good. I wish they were open for practice more often. When they do have practice, you only get to ride like (2) 15 minute motos the whole day. I usually buy 2 classes, but that gets $$$.

Horn Rapids: This track and Washougal are my top 2 favorites. Track is fun and it flows, also has good sand to switch it up from the traditional dirt. It's just too bad that it is 4 hours away from PDX!

Mountain View: I grew up riding this track so I have lots of memories (good and bad). It was one of my favorite tracks, but not anymore. I rode it for the first time last weekend and they totally screwed it up by putting bark all over it. I couldn't really get comfortable on it and noticed the same for the other riders. It was rather slippery and there were massive holes that formed everywhere. Dirt was unpredictable. Something about the bark makes the track a lot rougher than it used it. The trademark clay traction is gone. Back in the day, there was a window where the track was absolutely prime and felt like your bike was on a roller coaster rail because the dirt was so grippy. It was also even better when it would be overcast all day because the track wouldn't dry out. Now it's like I don't even want to ride it because the bark just ruins it.
Not only that but they charged me $60 to ride 2 classes on a public practice day when limited practice is only $50! Just doesn't make sense.

Am I missing other places to ride besides High Desert MX in Central Oregon which is far and doesn't compare to Horn and PIR that is open for practice once a year? I'm getting depressed because I'm running out of options for track riding. The PNW motocross tracks aren't like they used to be...

That said, i empathize with your depression. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching a video of some epic track and thinking why can't we have something even remotely close to that in PNW...

my last stint at Hannegan was to sign up for their Poker runs, (yes i'm hardcore) but instead ride the main track all day, and i remember having a fairly well prepped track almost to myself..

and if it were not for Thursday night series my wee little trophy room would not exist..

Probably didn’t explain well. I still have fun there…it’s just sad knowing how much better it used to be. The track used to go all the way to the woods and even had sections in the woods for hare scrambles and for big series races. The south end used to have a section that went back into the woods (track width though) and had some natural terrain plus a good-sized triple. On Thursday nights in between the moto weeks they’d run hare scrambles where you rode a 45-min moto mostly on the motocross track, but leaving in a few places into the woods (single-track plus some wider stuff) before returning to the track again.

I was there almost every Thursday from 92-97. Great memories.

The best part was in 93 or 94 when my English teacher asked why I had a note from my dad to be absent on Thursday afternoons…when I finally told him, he laughed and said “I raised my sons not far from Carlsbad. They raced there all the time. You’re learning as much or more about life at the track as what you’d learn in the classroom. Don’t worry about notes anymore.”

I Totally agree, and I was proud of that track back in the 90's.. Whatcom county actually produced some fast riders (still do) back then..

I call BS. Name the track. I ride em all and haven’t seen this in the last 5 years. 30-40 ride days a year.

I can confirm this happens. Went to Washougal on a practice day prior to the national. Drove 5 hours for it to start at 11 am (Scheduled for 9am start) and be done by 3. Track was in great shape, not sure why it started so late. Had to drive 5 hours back home same day, so was pretty disappointed in my (2) 15 min sessions.
Typical for Washougal. We stopped attending practice there bc all we did was sit on our asses and wait all day. 2/15 min sessions is lame.

That was a fluke and it wasn't a normal practice day either.
I've been going to shougal practices for years. I've always been able to easily get 3 sessions in even with 5 different groups going. I usually don't ride the last round or a 4 session because it gets rough.

But getting in 4 sessions isn't a problem most of the time there.
