Very cool. This will give me something to listen to at work, thanks. Stefan is a legend, and I was able to see him at one of the supercross races that he raced in the early 90s. He no doubt would have excelled at that too had he rode it more.

Yeah, he basically said he had the speed (which I agree with), but was crashing too much. I think he made the right choice to stay in Europe and focus on beating Roberts record, but it still would have been cool to see him cross the pond to race full time. But it's interesting how the fast out of the gate pace helped him when he went back to Europe.

Also interesting comments about the pressure he felt, and what he is doing to help his son with the pressure of filling his dad's shoes. Also loved his thoughts on his 2006 season, and how he capped it off. Great interview.

Thanks, yeah very interesting to hear his thoughts. I could have asked more but ran out of time - was only supposed to be half an hour and didn’t want to keep him any longer!

with his style and smoothness if he had got to supercross early I don't see a reason why he couldn't have done a JMB and won a few seasons of supercross.

I agree, I think he absolutely could have been a top supercross rider, although beating McGrath for a title wouldn’t have been easy in the 90s. For me, technique-wise, those two are the best of their respective sports, supercross and motocross. If you were teaching someone how to ride supercross and motocross from a technically perfect perspective, just bring up McGrath and Everts on YouTube!

Everts was simply on other level. Only RC you can compare outdoors.

Everts went and won the ISDE on his first try. Put thst into perspective. That is crazy! Just a total all round legend on a bike.

Exactly RC was a relentless machine or as RJ put it “brutal speed” whereas Everts was technical perfection - it’s a bit like Federer and Nadal!

RC toyed with Everts at MXoN on a small 250 two strokes on a perfect track for fourth strokes. The GOAT is the red head with short legs. Everts is the number two and he knows it.

Stefan was very open and honest there.

It's a special mindset to not feel relief after winning his 1st world title and it wasn't till he beat Joel Roberts record that he felt the relief. And he felt it took 17 seasons 10 World titles till he felt he was the best rider he could be. Unreal. Woohoo

And still felt he maybe should have won mote titles - and he's right! Could easily have been a 12 time world champ, just looking at the 98 and 94 world championships alone - very close.

Everts wouldn’t have accomplished so much if his toughest comp hadn’t left for America.

No way he has 10 titles and 100 wins if most of the best of the GP riders in the 90’s hadn’t come to America. How many world champs crossed the pond?

He’d have won a lot…but he was racing a depleted field of riders most of his career.

He fell in the 1st moto while in 2nd worked his way up 2nd again...Roger told him not to make it personal..because it was a team effort so they did what they had to do to win..Listen to the announcer talk about James' lap times before it rained..You must've started MX in the McGrath era...Dry

He was. The whole backing it down is bs, James set his fastest lap in the roughest and last moto of the day a couple of laps from the end. The difference was Everts did to, by a whole second. #

I forgot the publication or interview (maybe Pulp?) but James did eventually somewhat retract his post race interview and said the better man won on the day later down the line.
