UPDATE

I did ended up getting my shoulder repaired. I had it repaired 10 days ago. The MRI actually looked different than what the doctor found. The bone did not have the tendon ripped away, the tendon was ripped in half itself away from the joint. So it was a little different than a normal rotator cuff repair. Mush quicker surgery. So far I feel good not much pain, not what they had warned me about at least. Hopefully things stay that way. I do have PT twice a week which is them moving my shoulder for me. I do also get to do arm curls for now. Their plan is to make me wear the sling till 3.31.

Work has been ok, I can paint with my left hand and do most stuff some how. I do need help on some things. I own a body shop,

Good luck with the rehab. My brother just had RC surgery on 3 out of 4 tendons and is facing a long recovery. Shoulders suck.

I think I initially hurt my shoulder at least a year before at the gym. I had it looked at that time but they thought it was a minor issue. It had some discomfort that night but I raced anyways. It became a big deal later that night and caused many other injuries. If yours has issues maybe get it looked at for safety sake.

I dislocated my shoulder, tore my supraspinatous tendon, damaged the labrum (a SLAP tear) and "dinged" my humoral head (a Hill-Sachs deformity). I tried going the non-surgical route for a few years....til it got so bad I couldn't scratch my head and my supraspinatous muscle (immediately above the spine of the scapula, hence the name) was seriously atrophied. If you have a complete rupture of the tendon, I would suggest getting it fixed ASAP; especially if you are young and plan on living an active life...including taking diggers on your bike periodically. The shoulder is a vulnerable joint to begin with, given its significant mobility coupled with a shallow ball and socket articulation; add in more instability and your chances of further injuring it increase. The thing is, I think I already had at least a partially torn supraspinatous tendon aiding my dislocation mishap, if not causing it completely. More than 10 years after surgically repairing my supraspinatous tear, my labrum and also an unstable biceps tendon, my shoulder is tight and strong and I can ride my bike no problem! Good luck with whatever you do!

EDIT: Whoops a bit late. I hope this comment can help you in your future PT. I did tons of PT as well...I had a small/partial "tear" in my rotator cuff and lifting weights resolved my issues. I still have to do certain stretches to help with pain at times though. The best exercises I found were bench, bent over rows with barbell, and t-bar rows. If it hurts then don't do it. The stretch below also helped my pain. I had pretty bad discomfort for about a year or so...

Thank you, I really think that PT and lifting weights made a difference before surgery and will again after surgery.

UPDATE.
It has been almost 4 months since surgery to repair my torn subscapularis tendon in my right shoulder. Things are going very well. Hopefully when I meet with my surgeon on July 7th I will be cleared for everything . I have been doing my pt almost every day and will graduate from there July 6th. I have slowly started adding weight to my right side lifting at the gym.
I have not followed every rule the medical people have asked of me though. I started using resistance bands and weights before they said I could. I think it helped speed up my recovery. On May 29th I did return to a track on my bike. I was worried a little about being scared of riding, that fear didn’t occur. On the first lap I was back up to speed! Smooth and not casing or miss timing jumps was my goal to stay upright. I rode 3 sessions of 10 laps and never hit the dirt. It was my best day in months since the mishap. For that few hours at the track I felt normal and like my old self. I hope to ride again soon, just must balance bike stuff and things my wife likes to do like golfing.

Riding is the best gauge and confidence builder. I think you always have a little bit of anxiety getting back on the bike but when it goes well you really feel like you have recovered.

Amen! My whole confidence in my normal day has been poop for the last 8 months. I needed that ride badly.

Update: I graduated PT yesterday, two weeks earlier than planned. I still do my workouts just I don't have to miss work to do it. Hopefully I stay on track, I mean this both ways.

I’ve had three surgeries to my left shoulder. The first two were arthroscopic to mend a destroyed labrum and rotator cuff as a last ditch effort. The final one was an 8 inch incision from the top of my shoulder down to the bottom of it to replace my labrum, capsule, and shave my ball. I encourage those who have very minor shoulder injuries to go thru physical therapy. I’m in the gym daily before work and the amount of trauma that’s been done to my shoulder thru these surgeries is frustrating to say the least.

Going to the gym or just doing it home is very important. The medical people do what they need to repair us but we have to do our work to make sure it heals correctly. My physical therapist tells me stories about people that don't do their work and the shoulder sticks or doesn't move right. Then they talk bad about the surgeon. PT is not easy but it is our requirement to heal correctly. The gains we see daily or weekly are what keeps us going.

It took me six months to decide it was just not going to get better. I told myself every day I was recovering but I was just learning to manage my disability. Finally gave up and got it fixed and never looked back.
