I think the sad but true fact is the lack of respect and maturity many people display these days. I sold motorcycles for over 40 years and in the last 10, I've learned that people lack integrity a lot of the time.

Agreed. I used to buy and sell a ton of quads and bikes several years ago. That’s why I don’t do the back and forth. I’ve found out that most people have their mind made up whether they are buying before they have seen the machine.

I’ve driven out of state to meet people that didn’t show, drove out of state to see a yz450f that the had the VIN ground off the frame he didn’t bother telling me about, then when I pointed it out he went inside and locked the door...

I went to staples and bought a money marker anytime I sold a bike.

I went through that thread in 30 seconds, so perdon me for not taking the time to see all the red flags.

I just wanted to comment on 1 thing ; I was really a caliber in purchasing, and honestly when the deal is at the price you want, especially in a seller market, don't bargain. Run there and buy, maybe you will get a discount face to face if there are too many points to negotiate, but the best way to not do a smoking deal is to negotiate a bargain not face to face (and upset the seller).

Obviously from the comments, it was not such a bargain, but what I said is just something to keep in mind when buying.

1. Define your needs, usually brings 20% savings
2. Find the right source, about 10% savings
3. Negotiate, about 5% savings.

I won't details the 50 or 100 different leverages you can use and would be non applicable here, if you want by curiosity to look at it, there is for instance the A.T. Kearney chessboard, which presents leverages in a cool way to kill the cost.

Selling/buying on Marketplace is such a weird experience. I sold an old clapped out Silverado recently, and I got a couple of very angry messages from people after I changed the listing to sold Grinning I got over 70 messages in one day it was exhausting trying to keep up.

If you absolutely must do that because you have a hard cash limit and their ask is above that, the standard line is, "Hello, I'm very interested in your bike, but the absolute max I have available at the moment is $800. I don't want to waste your time if that's too low, but if it's something you might consider, please let me know and I'll come see it ASAP".

If I need to drive more than an hour to look at the bike I make an offer by text. Why waste my time driving if we aren’t in the same ball park? I’m glad plenty of people aren’t nt like you as we wouldn’t have made multiple sales if that was the case

To everyone saying I was being a tightass, 2nd gear was out of the bike and we did have the full amount.
I meant exchange phone numbers, not call thru fb. I wont conduct business if you cant make a 5 minute phone call. But thats me . People now days dont use the phone, makes things clear and simple.

I’m with you. My generation (millennials) much prefer text/messaging over actually having to speak to someone directly unfortunately. I usually always try to hear someone’s voice to feel them out before meeting up. The old school guys seem to make a call and show up with cash with much less beating around the bush. Its easy to misinterpret text and spend 10 times as long trying to communicate when a short call would suffice

I usually don’t make offers on scarce bikes. If I’m willing to pay full amount, I’ll look at it fast as I can. Then I ask “ I see you have it listed for X, any negotiating room? What will you take? “
Gives the seller some respect and puts them in driver seat. Not sure it’s any better than any other negotiating techniques, but I’ve been surprised by some discounts.

I offer what I’m willing to pay from the start. Otherwise any phone calls, meeting to see it, etc is a waste of time.

First off I refuse to negotiate over text. We'll talk when you get here. If you're a dick the chance of a deal is much lower.


That being said I'm selling my toyhauler on FB and a guy texts me and asks for the VIN for the bank. Well of course my warning lights are going off like nobodies business and tell him he can get that after he looks at it blah blah blah. A few minutes later he asks if he can call I say sure. Find out he's fairly close and in our talk he seems to be a great guy, I know some people that he knows and he wants to use it to go to the races with his family. I'm hoping this guy likes it and his family enjoys it for years. Even when you think someone is a flake it's quite possible they aren't.

Exactly. When I post something I know the market pretty well and am brutally honest in my ads. Usually the first person to show up buys & what I intended it to sell for.

Funny thing is I started putting in my adds that if you lowball me & I have time I will fuck with you. It's funny to see people get butthurt when I start messing with them & at that point I let them know they really should have read the ad better.........

Younger generation is the worst. They have no clue how to "foreplay" when buying they default just straight jamming it in there with no lube, ie "What's the lowest you will go?"...............
