Motorcycle shops must be doing just fine because I see no bargins or deals.
I'm surprised nobody is hurting to sell a dirt bike. I'm thinking the economy hasn't tanked enough for desperation sells.
Is your local shop giving bikes away yet?

The Shop
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Yamaha and KTM are under one shop now.
Honda and Suzuki were always one shop but they only have one 2009 model in stock, period. No Suzuki's at all.
In a city of over 350,000 people.
I payed AUS $7 for the same screw from the bike shop where i get my stuff from, yes i feel ripped of but we have to support the shops and also the shops have to stop jacking off on prices like these small things. Next thing i bought a set of shift gear (leopard stuff) and i got a killer deal from my shop so some things have to be wayed up. Me i will continue to go to my shop
- One is a Kawasaki/Husqvarna/Can-Am dealer and really into MX, and road racing, supports the people from this area who race and helps us personally a lot, always giving discounts and because of this he has a good name in the region therefore is selling bikes and gear, however he is still not making huge profits.
-One is a Yamaha dealer, he is a good guy but doesn't support MX as much. He aint selling that many bikes besides the odd farm bike or road bike, I think he's surviving on mechanicals at the moment
-One is a honda/Yamaha dealer, doesnt help anyone out and doesn't support racing at all. He is only surviving on repairs and John Deere lawn mowers!
In these times I encourage everyone who possibly can to pay the extra 10-20 bucks and support the dealers that support us. I for one am supporting my Kawasaki dealer because he always helps us out, even when he himself is doing it tough.
I remember years ago the #1 Yamaha dealer in the country (Australia) dealer sold mostly aggies and quads aimed at the farmer. Post tax return farmer would come in and purchase multiple bikes.

One simple answer, if a business is not making money on something they will stop selling or making that product. Simple. Period. Nothing else to it. You are falling for a salesmans line.
Why bother selling bikes if you are not making any money? Why have all that overhead sitting on the showroom floor? Simple, they are making money on bikes.
And forget about buying parts at a dealer especially OEM parts. Dealears get great prices on OEM parts and have a 50-60% markup. Ever wonder why when you go to a dealer and order a piston. They order an OEM one that takes a couple days to it, rather then just order a Pro-X piston through Parts Unlimited and have it there in a day or two. Markup, huge mark ups on OEM parts.
In my opinion if dealers really do not make money on bikes they wouldnt sell them. Why bother having dirt bikes on the showroom floor, I know more about the dirt bike im gonna buy then all the salesman do. I know what bike I want to buy. Dirt bikes don't come with options really, besides some manufacturers offer two colors.
I wish we could go on the manufacturers website, order a bike, pay for shipping, and have it delivered. The techs at dealers do a horiible job on the initial bike prep anyway.
Basically, buy as much as you can online, support online company's that actually put money back into the industry like motosport outlet, yamaha of troy, babbits. Force dealers to drop prices to a reasonable level and make then realize that they need to help support the industry instead of just trying to get fat dump and happy.
I'd like to be able to do that, but the local dealer is just plain incompetent. One of my buddy got his engine redone. First hare scramble the bike locks up: They forgot to put oil in the gearbox. Back to the shop to fix it. He picks it up and they forgot to put back the screws that hold the seat, as well as one of the plastic front engine cover.
He gives them onother chance, buys a pair of boots for is kid. Goes home, looks a bit more closely, the boots don't match: They are different year models!
I couldn't care less if they shut down because there is no way these clowns will ever work on my bike...
try 20-35% mark up chuckie.. if we made 50-60% margins, do you think we would be hurting? my paycheck each week is looking awfully small for the money you think we are making.
you have no idea how the real world works and i encourage you to keep your opinions to yourself

No one said they weren't making money. I said it's never been a big money maker and the reason they sell the bikes is because its part of being a full service dealer or the dealership is a fan of racing. As far a “falling for a salesman’s line". In my 25+ years of being in the sport I have had friends that own dealers and it's no sales pitch. Much more money to be made in the ATV and Street lines than there is the dirt bike line.
Sounds like a dealer told you to shove it up you're ass when you came into their shop and started demanding discounts.
so when your out riding on a friday and you break something your gonna order it online and pay saturday next day air delivery?? i'll bet your local dealer is ok then??
like 238 of 'em
where they got all the parts and gear from what i seen it was not an impressive mark up.
from what i remeber a dirt bike was 17%mark up an this shop it was one that won
a few arenacross championships. but i may be wrong. just stating what i seen nothing more.
