Got a line on a nice '84 CR250. Any opinions or advice / what to lookout for ? Just something to haul my lard butt around on few times a year between evo/vintage races on the Huskys. Thanks, ride safe

The magnesium clutch cover/water pump housings are usually bad.

I put a Yamaha piston in mine

Good bike, but if I recall, they had a tendency to crack pistons for some reason. I remember the MXA test with a photo after about six races showing cracks traveling up the intake skirt. They said they bought pistons by the six pack.

The 84 Honda's cracked pistons when the piston become worn after so many hours. It has to due to the position of the exhaust ports if I can recall. When the piston became worn it caught a ring on the exhaust port and it went bam - sometimes big, sometimes small.

I also recall it had main bearing problems issues. When they failed you went out and you pressed in an aftermarket bearing to fix the problem.

I do recall I had issues with the bike and I got an RM250 after I blew it up a few times. But the bike handled well, it was well balanced, and had the front disc brake. A 1st for Honda at the time

speaking of magnesium issues, my 89 cr125's water pump pipe corroded and cracked off, and its part of the cases!

In regards to the 1984 CR250, yes the water pump is a BIG issue. The 1984 water pump covers are a "one year only" cover. You cannot use any other water pump cover and Honda no longer makes the part.

Bike Bandit still lists a 1989 CR125 water pump cover as still being available.

Looks like you need to order one.

unfortunatly its not that simple, my water pump cover is fine, but the hose leading away from the water pump runs through the right side case, and it cracked off there.

On CR250's the water pump case cover is the whole right side clutch cover. CR250's also have the hoses exiting out of that cover.

When you order a new water pump cover you are ordering the right side clutch/water pump cover, which would include the hoses exiting out the cover.

about how much would that set me back? I'm also thinking about trying to jb weld it, but im not sure how well that would work although i've seen jb weld hold up to alot, like when my friends dad bought a CRF250X brand new, and the first ride he took a rock cracked the cases, a little jb weld helped that one!

craaaaaaaaap! the cover is $122, the gasket is $9, the other gasket is $8, then there's about $16 in hardware and $4 in oil seals. I was right about to sell this bike and suddenly it broke and now i got a $160 plus fix, this sucks sence the bike will probobly only fetch $800

If that water hose broke off, JB weld is not going to do the job. Many people used JB weld to repair the inside of the water pump case. My guess is if you checked the inside of the water pump case there is probably a huge amount of corrosion.
Once the hose mounts break off you cannot repair it.

I am surprised you do not have milky looking transmission oil.

Sell me that bike Joe. I need it for the TVRC's XX class. A '89 KX250 in similar condition would also suffice.

If memory serves, on some of the early models, the exhaust ports weren't chamfered from the factory, creating all kinds of nasty piston issues. An easy fix, for sure, if the dealers actually took time to do it. Mine didn't.

Nice find. If you decide to ride it, make sure you service/grease everything before you do.

the inside of the water pump has massive amounts of corrosion on the ports, but not the impelar chamber. my tranny oil is actualy very good although it did get milky when i sank my bike in 4feet of water in gidney hill shale pit, but one oil change later plus a blowdryed airfilter, drained carb and drained exhuast got me riding again. I though i blew up my bike when that happened, because it had a couple qt's of water in the exhuast, and i think some was in the cylinder because the plug was black and really wet.

My 86 Cr 250 with the correct seat cover installed and a recently rebuilt Ohlins shock. This bike rips ! Just order a new front fender, I might even get the correct 250 shroud decals soon

I've been trying to find out which Yamaha piston guys are using in the 1984 CR250? Any help would be great!
