yz250 shock shaft damage

Edited Date/Time 3/16/2021 3:11am
I am rebuilding a yz250 shock and i saw that there is a small dent in the shaft about halfway. The chrome is still in good condition.
Is this something to worry about?

Ouch. That may or may not cause a leak or a little weeping. I'd replace it but most would just run it.

I dont want it to leak but a new shaft will be pricey.

Depending whether or not it’s rough may cause seals to blow but if the surface isn’t even then you’ll definitely leak. I’d replace it.

About all you can do is try polishing it out on a lathe and make it smooth as possible. Then maybe use some super glue to fill the ding and smooth it out. I have put super glue in fork tube dings with good results, but I don't know if that will work on a shock shaft. If it starts leaking then you'll probable have to replace it.

Just went through this, best bet is replace the shock shaft. I tried polishing the "rock peck" out, rebuild the seal head and it immediately started leaking. This was before we put it back on the bike.

New shock shaft from KYB will be here tomorrow.

Was there a leak before you started, if not run it as is,
Although if there was a leak you will have to replace the shaft.

I am picking up a used shock and will use that shaft if it is in better condition.
