Anyone have a MAICO 490 or KTM 495?

My Dad had an 1982 KTM 495 like the one below.
Good strong motor - easy to start.
Weak breaks
Front forks were "springy", not very smooth or progressive.
Rear Fox twin-clicker shock was nice
Replaced stock muffler with aluminum and saved 10lbs.
Bike felt tall for a 5'-9" guy and the seat/tank were narrow - easy to move around.
Overall a fun open bike that was easy to maintain. Good bike to go against all the Maicos.
I wish I still had it!

If you want big air cooled hammer, you could look into Honda CR480, or if you're lucky, stumble on an 84 CR500 which was the first and last year of the air cooled 500. The 82 480s were not that great, but 83s are, and in many forms of vintage racing they are sometimes the bike to beat for their classes. The Maicos are great, but tough to find for any reasonable price.

There’s a short video on Mike Vizers Instagram of a gentleman wringing out a Maico at Daytona’s RC race this past week... check it out...
