So first off this isn't to bash a certain style/type of bike. I still love the 2T, and my current 4T. I know how someone is gonna get mad at this post because of E-bikes and what not. I'm not trying to start a debate but came across this while surfing the Gram and found it interesting. It basically says KTM, Yamaha, Honda may be joining forces to make a universal battery for E-bikes. After reading this, I thought to myself with our current regime in place, the push for electric vehicles ( dirt bike related) will be coming a lot sooner rather than later. My guess is in the next 3 to 4 years. What are your guys thoughts? Here's the link.

Makes sense, at least initially. I was kind of wondering if something like this would happen though my thought was it would come from a third party source that would get adopted by the manufacturers.

I think this is going to speed up the push to market quickly now.

I have ZERO knowledge, pure speculation, but I'm guessing KTM comes to market with a more 'competitive' full size
electric dirt bike in the next 8-12 months.

KTM surely sees that creating a consortium of mfg's (batteries) reduces the costs and with their marketing strategy gets them to the market place earlier and with a proven chassis.......

Bikes are awesome.... ebikes are just really bad motorcycles.... they are super quiet, but other than that, there is a motorcycle that massively outperforms an ebike in every situation

I think that is an incredibly ambitious target.

This is more for mopeds and such for now.

Having a universal battery/charging system is what’s needed to move electric forward. I have a 5 gallon can of gas and I can fill up like 10 different things with it, from pressure washers to bikes to lawn mowers. Yet my drill has its own proprietary battery that is only compatible with that brand. It’s bullshit. That battery should be able to fit my sons Stacyc and like 7 other things around the house.

There *is* a motorcycle which massively outperforms an ebike.

Will there always be? All it will take is one misplaced rule or law and the ebike will have a leg up. It will become a requirement to compete or operate due to unfair policy and thrive despite any shortcomings. It will enjoy a similar unfair advantage to the one that 4-strokes have had since 1998.

I just found out about Surron through Ballard's off-road Instagram page. Geoff Ballard has done a lot of testing for various manufacturers, including Yamaha. Geoff seemed to like the Surron.

Like it or not, it is the future and probably sooner than some, myself included, would prefer. I'm not a MX guy, just a senior offroad rider. I love my two strokes and still prefer them over my 350 four stroke for everyday riding.

But I have ridden an Alta and can say that it certainly performed as well as just about any of my bikes offroad for my use with the exception of range and cost.

That said, it will never make my midweek 4hr offroad ride up the Mtn in NorCal, any trip to the desert in SoCal, let alone the annual Baja Trip. Simply doesn't have even remotely close to the range needed.

But with the politics in CA being what they are, they may be forced upon us before they are ready or can actually accomplish what many of us offroad riders desire for practical use.

While riding the Alta was a different experience, it did perform. Just doesn't have the range needed by most offroad and was cost prohibitive. Lets be honest, dirtbikers aren't Investment Bankers, we are just regular folks and cost does matter.

Hopefully range and cost are addressed before they are forced upon us.

I know it's the future, but I plan to burn gas and oil for as long as I possibly can!

There are some trials bikes now that are electric with a clutch. In fact GasGas has a unit with a 5 speed and a clutch. Also there are several electric MTB/motorcycle hybrids out there. KTM working in conjunction with the Japanese companies for standardization shows just how seriously those companies are taking e motorcycles.

David Knight is testing the full size Sur Ron offroad bike and been helping them develop it for a few years.

2021 Emotion Electric Trials bike with clutch. Three power ranges, Red range scares the sheet out of you! Lots of fun!

Uhm, I'm afraid I witnessed the opposite this weekend at the track. My son rides a KTM 50 sx and handles it relatively well and was competing lap for lap with a kid on a 50 cobra for a couple motos. The kid comes out the next moto on a Husqvarna E5 and simply puts on a clinic. You could easily see the torque pull him through the turns way smoother and quicker and passes my son no problem. It appeared much easier for the kid to ride the E bike versus the ICE machine. I understand the auto clutches etc, but he looked way better and faster with the E powered machine.

E bikes are the best for kids. No noise, Ktm 50's are so annoyingly loud, no hot pipes, way better response and the lack of maintenance compared to a gas one, only lube the chain and plug it in. Once they get a quick charger which I am close to having, you don't even need the battery to be better then it is now. They will get better but the quick charger you can ride all day.

This announcement is more about city type scooters , which having a quick change battery will be awesome ,

I’d be surprised if the manufacturers all used the same battery in a competition bike
