Hello guys, looking for some advice on a new bike. My dad, just turned 84 last tuesday is looking for a new weapon. With over 35 years of experience this may be the last? one.
He had xr250, husq te510, husq tc570, cr500, cr250, a lot of cz twin pipes and cr250s at the same time, crf450x and now a ktm freeride 350f. His problem is that he shrinked to 5” 3/4, so a lower seat or lowering kit is key. He finds the freeride is too much a toy, suspension and power is underperforming and thinks about a Two stroke enduro. Light, nimble. He is not a revver, so 125-200cc is too light. What to get?? or should he just go the way of a exc250/350f ?

84? Bravo to him! I hope I can still ride at that age.
Can he still kickstart a bike? If not, look at one of those euro 2-stroke enduro bikes. The fuel-injected, e-start kind sounds perfect.

Beta Xtrainer 250 or 300 sounds like the perfect bike! E-start, the seat height should be lower than standard, softer comfortable suspension setup.

What suspension is on it: normal 48mm fork?

64 years old and just bought one. Perfect - can lug it around and it runs clean. With clutch skills can climb big hills (any of those in NLD?). Very light so easy on the stamina (which is in limited supply these days). No big hit to kill him (or me). Button. I also have an 150SX which is totally different. I would let him test ride mine but there is a big ocean between us.

Its a 43mm fork it works well, probably not the best for real fast riding but thats not what the bike is for. I highly recommend the xtrainer I love mine.

KTM 300XC-W - best of both worlds. Fun, light feeling of a 2 stroke but you can lug it like a 4 stroke.

It’s a 43mm Sachs unit, it’s on the comfort side of the spectrum. But for easy fun trail riding it is fine IMO. The engine is straight tractor torque, very easy to ride very linear but all down low. The bike is physically sized close to the Freeride, it’s just a hair bigger.

my 2018's fork and shock are built by a Spanish company-Olle. I don't know for sure if the newer models have Sachs or not.

KTM EXC or Husky TE 250s. The power on them is silky smooth, counterbalancer make them vibration free, adjustable power valve lets you tune it from XR-like friendliness to big hit insanity. Get the Husky TX if you want a linkage rear suspension and have no need for the lights.

Beta 250 X trainer if you're looking for something at a better price point, high quality bikes but not as "electric" feeling as the KTM/Husky twins.

Well, my own git feeling us a bit towards the exc250 tpi. I know there are lowering kits for it, and being able to fool around with the power valve is a plus. Lets wait for better weather...

The new reiju ranger models? It's like the xtrainer. But I think it has better suspension components. It comes with slightly older school kyb suspension. 46mm kyb fork and kyb shock. It's like the full size bike just lowered and a lower price. It's directly competing against the xtrainer.

Looks like it has a lot of pre-KTM Gas Gas in there.

The Austrian 250-300 two strokes are really good and easy to ride. The 150 is super fun but is a big 125 and has to be ridden like one to really go anywhere. If he likes a semi MX feel to the suspension get an XC or TX. If he wants a super plush tight-woods setups then a TE or XCW. The 300 in particular is well suited to someone who is not a revver (though it can be made to rev with a litttle work).

The subframes on the Husqvarna models are a little lower in the back and might fit him better.

The Beta Xtrainer is also worth a look. I haven’t ridden one, but they are a litttle smaller than a normal bike and probably a bit more suspension than a free ride.
