So I was reading on a football forum that I"m a member of and they had a post about whether Kobe or Lebron was as good as Jordan used to be. They went on naming champions of various sports and I put a post on there about RC. I consider him to be the most dominant athlete in any sports besides maybe Floyd Mayweather Jr.( to my knowledge he never lost?) Whats your opinion on the greats of all time of any sport?

Chess as a sport? Maybe if they air it on ESPN...

Tiger Woods... Whats he like 60% win record? In golf, that's incredible.

If moto was more mainstream, I think RC would be on every top athlete lists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess

The tradition of organized competitive chess started in the 16th century and has developed extensively. Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; Viswanathan Anand is the current World Champion. Theoreticians have developed extensive chess strategies and tactics since the game's inception. Aspects of art are found in chess composition.

Having said that Bobby Fischer would only be the US GOAT. Garry Kasparov or Emanuel Lasker would probably be the worldwide GOATs.

It's hard to really say because so many sports are so different.
But there's NO FU*KING WAY LeBron or Kobe are as good as Michael Jordan was in his prime. No way.

But, as was pointed out by David above, Edwin Moses had one hell of a run.

Michael Jordan is a great.
Joe Montana is a great.
Mickey Mantle was a great.
Muhammad Ali is a great.
Tiger Woods is a great.
Ricky Carmichael is a great.
Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a great.
Pete Sampras is a great.
Michael Phelps is a great.
Lance Armstrong is a great (although Lance has always said Eddy Mercyx was the greatest cyclist ever).

See, too many sports to really say there is just ONE greatest athlete.

Cael Sanderson Iowa State Wrestler, ONLY UNDEFEATED (159-0) 4 time NCAA Wrestling Champion, 2004 GOLD MEDALIST. Head Wrestling Coach at Iowa State, then he broke our hearts and went to PENN STATE! (but he's still the best) And that's saying ALOT when we still have Dan Gable at IOWA.

Forget about chess. Go Seigen is where it's at for mental sports!

As for motocross it was always Jeremy McGrath everyone talked about when I was a kid.

Yeah, I was trying to kid, but you are right... "Searching for Bobby Fischer" is actually one of my top 20 movies... I just don't know how those top players' minds work.

And no b-ball player is close to MJ, especially if you look at the contribution he made to the game...

Which brings up a point... How do you classify a GOAT? Is it just winning? Dominating? Or is it about elevating the sport? Spinner's list, I think, summed it all up nicely.

What about Geoff Duke? Lets all remember history goes back a long while. John Surtees perhaps? Aryton Senna maybe? Michael Schumacher just a few short years ago? So many champions in so many different sports it is impossible to determine the best ever unless you look at sports individually and even then it is difficult to do.

Lance was right, Merckx won all year round, not only the tour.
