1978 vs 1979 yz 100

Edited Date/Time 5/5/2021 4:06am
Is there any difference between the 1978 yz100E and the 1979 yz 100f. Bought a 79 new as a kid but it is long gone. Was looking to find a 79 to restore. Found a 78 and the look identical.

Looked on Partszilla looks like '78E-'79F same except maybe a few minor parts, 77D is in there as well. Seat of the pants I'd say very close if not same maybe check pipe, jetting etc.

We also had a new 1979 100F back in the day, was a great bike. We ran it for 2 years then got the YZ100H- 1981. The 1981 H handled better but in someways I liked the 79~F- it was really fast. First few races I won on those bikes- as said think the YZ100E was very similar to the YZ100F. Damn super bikes- the RM's handled slightly better but the YZ's seemed faster - remember hitting bumps and jumps on that thing really hard but was great fun.

Yes I remember those days. Even kept up well on track with the rm 125. Guess it was the rider. Lol.

78/79- they are basically the same bike. Some changes started in 1980 with FIM side plates and motor tweaks and carried into 1981. Weak points on the 78/79 is the compact chassis confining for many adults, wimpy clutch, skinny flexy forks & clamps, and lame rear shock that can't easily be modified/improved and no direct swaps from other Yamahas of the era or aftermarket options available. The motor however, as others noted is very competitive and reliable. Luckily they are direct bolt in for any 1977-79 YZ125 chassis that solves most the shortcomings of the 100 chassis.

Thanks. Looking for a 79 yz 100. The first new bike I ever bought myself.

Apologies for the thread Hijack. Thought you were looking for something to race in VMX 100cc class now. My 1st 100 I bought myself was 1972 Yamaha LT2 when I was 13 y/o. No pictures of that 1, but here's a 78 100E I had about 10 years ago.

100cc were unknown in Australia.
There were a fair few differences between a YZ80E, and the ‘79 YZ80F.
The F was much better. (Frame/Swingarm/“internal rotor” ignition.)

a22 hit it on the head. 78 YZ was faster, but the RM's lasted longer. Good times!

Early 80's (83-86) 100cc was quiet popular in Oz.
