1993 KX 125 - Finished....For Now

7/3/2020 5:49am
So a small update on the bike. I finally figured out the clutch issue. The bike must have set for a while with crappy oil in the transmission. I flushed the transmission out and put new oil in, rode the bike around the yard and got the clutch good and hot. It finally released and has worked good ever since.

I found a stock pipe for the bike, it should be here in a couple days. My plan is it strip the pipe and make it look like a works pipe. Hopefully it will look a little better than the rough FMF that's on it now. I also purchased an original Deval skid plate.

My first race on this thing is July 12th. Hopefully I'll have some cool pictures to post after it.

A few days ago I was looking through eBay when a pipe for a 92-93 popped up. It looked like it was a stock pipe, I went ahead a bought it. A few days later it showed up at the house, after I got it out of the box I realized it was an original Pro Circuit pipe. Someone had painted it black and the tag had been broken off. It has a couple small dents, which I will fix after I race this weekend. I spent a couple hours cleaning it up last night, still has some rust and paint but it already looks 100 times better. Does anyone know if I can buy a new tag for it?

I purchased a pair of Answer Racing pants last night. I am trying to find the jersey to match. If anyone has the jersey below please let me know.

Pulled the bike out last night and rode it around the yard. I need to get a few good pictures of the completed bike. My boy decided he wanted to ride in front of the bike while I was taking pictures.

After having this bike for almost a year last weekend I decided to race it for the first time. The bike ran great! The only issue that I had was the clutch still drug a little which lead to me killing it a couple times. I rode a local GP race, in a class called "decade". This class is for any bike 10 years old or older, so I was at a little disadvantage. I was running around 5th until going down on the last lap, ended the day 10th.

A little update on the KX, I decided to race it again last Sunday. Ended up 3rd in my class, a little over a second behind second place (which was an early 2000's YZ 250). The more I ride this bike the more I like it. It took me a little bit to get used to riding a 125 again. This winter the bike will be framed again and a few things fixed. It has a couple cracks in the frame and if I can find the pictures of the factory team frames I may add a few gussets. Out of the 20ish bikes I've redone this is by far my favorite.

So since the weather is turning cold and racing is pretty much done for a few months, I figured it was time to tear the old girl back apart and fix a couple things that I know are wrong. I started the tear down process today.

The things I know I need to correct are

Fix the cracked frame (already had one crack repaired)
Blow the dents out of the pipe
Put the correct shock on the bike.
Trim the hugely oversized skidplate.

I'm sure I will find other things that I want to fix after I get deeper into this again.

Good looking bike! I had a 92 KX250 , so I am partial to the 92-93 model years. I will say and it seems you have found out is that the frames were notorious for cracking, both 125/250s on this generation Kawi's. My 92 frame always cracked.

Keep this bike going, its awesome seeing you race it!

I spent most of the day yesterday in the garage putting the KX back together. I had the frame fixed, decorated the frame, blew the dents out of the pipe, clean everything, rebuilt the brakes, and put a stinger style end cap on my PC silencer. I’m currently waiting on a few more parts, brake lines, NOS MXA graphics, shrouds, clutch, and rear master cylinder guard.

It’s going to be hard to choose between this and my CR when it come to racing one of my 90’s 125’s next year.

Awesome restore JT! I had a ‘92 and ‘93 KX250’s back in the day, and loved them. I also remember having frame welds crack, but bike was solid beyond that. My buddy had a ‘92 KX125 that he used to let me race a few times and, that bike fit like a glove! Love the blue rims and you keeping to a somewhat stock look. This brings back great memories for me, and glad to see you brought it back to its glory and enjoying it!!

Nice work! I raced a ‘93 KX 250 for much of the 1990s. I really liked that bike. Very forgiving handling. I think I had some different linkage on it that improved turning and had race tech do up the suspension with gold valves. Worked really well.

After racing some moto with this bike the last couple years, I've decided to go a different route. I am an enduro rider at heart, so I'm going to try and make this into a ISDE replica. My brother won a D11 enduro championship on a 1993 KX 125. I've already found a couple cool items for the build. UFO fender extension (actually on a 97 rear fender, hopefully it works), a NOS FMF silencer to go along with the FMF pipe that was on the bike when I got it.

I think the next items I'm going to try to get will be a set of Marzocchi Magnum forks and a different headlight. I would love to have a Elba 2 or a green Elba.

Bro where you gonna find zook forks for this?!?!?

I feel you on the old 125 woods build though. Doing a 98 RM125 myself. Surprised at how many parts are available if you scrounge around.

My plan was to use a set of Marzocchi's of a mid 90's KTM. When I find a set that someone doesn't want an arm and a leg for, I'll have a set of spacer made so the forks will fit in my stock triple clamps.

Made a little progress on the bike over the weekend. I can't decide if I like the yellow headlight or not. I'm going to order backgrounds and I would love to find a set of the Acerbis numbers like they used in the ISDE during this period.

I went to a little podunk elementary school in the middle of no where. Our school library had educational books on enduro riding, so I scanned through them every time I was able to. I have a soft spot for 1990s GNCC/Off-road stuff because it’s all I could entertain myself with in 1st grade. Still am ultra fond of another members CRE250 build on here!

Excited to follow the build.

PLENTY of hours in this one.
Why did you call it the ISDE replica? I was expecting a headlight, LOL.

My recollection was that these bikes were so soft in terms of their durability for racing. Your finished bike looks fantastic and I'm sure it's fun to play around on. Have you called PC or Hinson about the clutch?

It has a headlight and taillight, they currently do not work but they are there. I'm wanting to find the kit that Acerbis sold in the past that allows the lights to run off a 9v battery. I also plan to have a set of background made to look like the Acerbis numbers that were used at ISDE, black number with a large white outline.

My brother and a few other fast local enduro guys raced these back in the day. All the stories I've been told is that they didn't have any issues with durability.

I haven't really messed with the clutch too much. I checked all the spacers and the stack height of everything and it is in spec. I actually put a new set of plates in the clutch and it made it worse.

Do you still have the 83/125 KTM ? I had one new, the WR model, loved it.

Small update.

Found an original set of light blue Acerbis Rally handguards and a set of purple spoilers. The handguards were painted grey, I somehow got lucky and removed the grey paint without removing the Acerbis lettering. I also located a green Elba headlight. It's pretty rough shape but with some elbow grease I should be able to make it look fine. I also just purchased a solid rear rotor.

If I can get this bike to where I feel it is reliable, I plan to race the Zanesville, Ohio round of the NEPG on it this year.

Love this build, as a kid my hero’s were Danny Hamel and Larry Roeseler! Both on team green machines. I always wanted to build a 80cc full size ISDE replica that Larry rode! I made my KX250F into a wanna be

That is so cool man. What a build!

I turned my 2000 KX250 into an enduro rig!

So I've been gathering up a few cool parts for this thing lately. I've found a NOS FMF silencer, a pair of Answer Pro Taper bars, and 2 sets of Answer Pro Taper mounts and bar pads. I think I'm most excited about the bar pads. I'm going to try to fix the dent in my FMF pipe to go along with the silencer. I'll run the FMF set up when the bike is in enduro trim and the PC set up in MX form. I also ran across a good deal on a stock silencer and pipe.

So the KX is pretty much finished, at least for now.

I have two complete set ups for the bike now, mx and enduro. MX set up has a full PC exhaust, purple Renthal Twin Walls, original MXA graphics and a few other bits. The enduro set up has full FMF exhaust, original Pro Taper bars with NOS bar pad, Acerbis handguards with spoilers, green Acerbis headlight and a pretty rare UFO rear fender.

I'm pretty happy with how this thing turned out. I'm kind of at the point where I hate to get it dirty but it will be ridden.
