I’m sure ya get this all the time. New to the forum, new to dirt bikes. Mostly I trail ride with a few obstacles for now until I gain more skill and more confidence to tackle more complex terrain and obstacles. I’m consistently getting better by getting out of my comfort zone.

I’m almost 40yo with a good career. But with that said, I can’t afford to break myself. So naturally I’m looking at protective equipment.

I’ve never worn knee braces, and in the few months I’ve been riding, all I have is boots, helmet and gloves aside from thicker clothing for abrasion resistance.

Next on my list is knee braces, but so far I’ve become accustomed to using my bare knees to squeeze the bike, so naturally my concern is not wanting to use a brace that is really wide and throw that off. But just like the boots, I’m sure I’ll get used to them.

But I’d like some input from some experienced folk like yourselves. I’m looking at two different types of knee braces that are relatively low profile:

Asterisk cell one vs leatt c frame

Any opinions would help. Thank you

Look on the home page. They did a write up on all the main braces. I wear CTi2 since I got insurance to pay for it.

I am on the market for a low profile knee brace too and i think you should throw on your list the new alpinestar carbone Bionic 10, it seems low profile too (not as much as the asterix i think).

If anyone here has experience with the new alpinestar, share it with us.

I’ve enjoyed my Leatt X Frames this season after switching from CTI’s..... but tore my ACL in them.

Do I think it was the braces fault? No

Do I think a higher end brace would have protected me better? Who knows.

My son wore PODs youth braces, had a gnarly get off and had an evulsion fracture (basically tore the ligament from the bone which is common in kids as the ligaments are stranger than the bone). No surgery was needed. The brace broke across the top portion that crosses over the thigh. When I showed it to his ortho, the guy just said, "impressive" Point is the brace did what it was designed to do in keeping the injury from being worse. No brace is going to alleviate the chances of injury but can mitigate the effects. All that said, After the pods, the bot rode with the Leatt C-Frame. I liked the concept and he was always good in them , but I found the build quality to be poor. We always had issues with the hinge catching up or the velcro straps getting folded over/catching, etc. So Since he needed a new pair I decided to go back to the POD's. We looked at the Asterix, and Mobius and I felt the POD's offered the best combination of bracing and the best knee cap protection. Note, Mobius has the best fitment system, but comfort and fit issues ruled it our for us. Asterix has great reviews and guy from RMATVMC said its now his favorite was the lowest profile, but I felt it didn't offer enough patella coverage...hope that helps.

The home page is the main one you go to when you go to www.vitalmx.com. I am active duty Army, and had reconstructive knee surgery in 1997 before joining in 2004. I just went to the DR last year and asked if I could get one.

I haven't rode in it yet, but I think it will do fine and hold up. I run in it and its okay, a little uncomfortable, but I think they all will be to some extent. I just got a bike and will be re-building it this winter.

I have the bionic 10’s and had the bionic 7 before and they are really low profile. Most braces its hard to close the top of the boot but I can easily with the Astars braces.

I also use the pods at 50+. I did take the patella guards off though and I use TLD 5450 knee guards *underneath* the PODs. I found that the patella guards fitment made it difficult to extend my leg for cornering. After removing the guards I really like the fit and build quality. Prior to PODs I used older asterisks...

Mobius. I've tried them all including CTI custom and i like the mobius the best. No relation to owner Barry Mobius....just a good product.

I had the bionic 10 briefly but I got a size too big. I wasn’t impressed with the knee cap area, I bruised my knee first crash. In the möbius I’ve never bruised my knee before although they’re bulky.

I have been in the Asterisk Carbon Cell 1 since the beginning of the year and truly wish I had these prior to knee surgery. They are so light weight and thin and after a long day of riding (track and trails) I hardly even notice that they are there. Also they are all American made (you don't see that often in the moto scene). I have tried some of the other brands before and just didn't seem as protective for me.

I got an evulsion fracture this summer, ripped acl pcl out of the bone. I’m 29 and doc said this type of thing is rare. I had to get surgery and currently in PT. I have searched and didn’t really haven’t seen much on this type of injury. How’s your son doing now?

I have the same ones.
For the most part I really like them, they are light, thin feeling...not bulky like others I've had and you can tighten them down well.
But they do have a few issues.
1. The little plastic lock out clips won't stay in place, I had to glue mine in.
2. The padding that's glued to the carbon peals off over time.
3. The straps start to fray and one of mine has developed a tear.
The other thing that pisses me off the most is the company won't ship usps, so it costs me an arm and a leg on shipping when I need spares, sometimes the shipping is more than the parts....WTF!

These are great responses guys and I really appreciate the opinions and shared experiences. I’m looking into the CTi stuff at the moment to see if my insurance will cover them. If not I think I’ll look into the cell 1’s. They seem to be the strongest competitor in terms of the low profile feature.
