Hi guys, had a nasty fall over the weekend and dislocated my shoulder. I currently have a leatt 5.5 body armour but not the suit jacket style.

Can anyone recommended any products for shoulder protection or another body armour?

Thanks Adam

Were you wearing the Leatt 5.5 when this happened? I think the shoulder cups are just to protect that bone against impacts. I have always questioned how well they work even going back to hockey playing days since they never seem to fit well for me. They always float up above my shoulder a little. I am not sure it will help with dislocation unless you landed right on your shoulder. My crashes where my shoulders hurt usually involved me landing on my arm and the load going up into my shoulder. I am not sure there is much you can do about that except elbow pads might help a little.

In what way did your shoulder get dislocated? Mine happened from leverage (6 times). There's no protection product on the market that will prevent that. If your arm comes up over your head in a crash or your hand gets behind your body, it will happen. It gets easier each time, too.
My best advice is do lots of rehab and make the small muscles stronger. I eventually had to have surgery though.

Not crashing is best. Theres nothing that will prevent dislocation.

Thanks I understand crashing is nothing anyone intends to do, however I was just wanting any body armours or body suits you recommend that have good shoulder protection.

Leatt and other companies have a shoulder brace that is designed to stabilize your shoulder. Unfortunately for me I have found that it is not enough to prevent a dislocation during a crash, as I have had two dislocations while wearing the brace. I have found that the best way to prevent a dislocation during a crash is to wear whatever amount of gear you feel necessary, and then make a conscious decision to tuck your arm into your body instead of reach out to brace your fall. This is obviously easier said than done, but it has worked for me.

EVS makes a shoulder stabilizer that I have used after I dislocated my shoulder and cracked the socket. Not body armor but is designed to help hold the shoulder and very upper arm close to the body. I can't say if it did a whole lot or not but for the first few months of riding after recovery it sure provided a nice mental placebo that I had some sort of "protection."

I've used them over the years for shoulder issues too. My experience is they don't prevent redislocation but they do hold everything tighter so the shoulder doesn't feel as unstable. That also helps reduce pain if riding after fresh injury.

Ditto on the EVS brace. Won't do anything for riding but was VERY nice while I was recovering from collarbone surgery. It held my shoulder up and back while I slept and helped my posture during the day.

I had an EVS brace also, and I just could not get used to it. It held my arm down too far and I couldn't get into the right position to ride.
