How long should amateurs stay on 125s?

I’m writing in today to ask how long I should keep my 125? I’m 15 but didn’t ride minis. I currently have a 250f and 125 and am wondering wether I should fully commit to the 250f and sell the 125 or keep riding both to make up for lost small bore 2 stroke time?

Depends on your goals ...... are you trying to go full on national or world class pro? I'm of the opinion that at the local pro level a good enough rider can win their local pro class on a well built 125 against 250f's.

One thing I can guaranDAMtee you is that when you're old enough, you'll understand that a good rider that can win local pro races on a 125 against 250f's will pull way hotter chicks and way MORE chicks winning on a 125. You're only about a year or two away from finding out that the tail wags the dog for the next 30 years of your life then the dog starts to wag the tail again 😂😂😂 and if I was you I'd focus on becoming the best you can be on the 125 bec if you can haul serious ass on a 125, you'll ALWAYS be able to go faster than most when you hop on a 250f

That's mostly a tongue in cheek comment but it is true 😂

Depends on your goal.
Wanna get fast with good riding technique? Keep the 125 and use it a lot.
Just wanna have fun, throw whips and don't mind about riding technique? Sell the 125 and keep the 250f.

If i were you i'd sell both and buy a 250 2 stroke.

It is my belief that everyone should be required to race a 125 before getting a bigger bike. In fact, you should be required to do that before you get a driver's license or get married, too. Grinning
Keep the 125. It will teach you many important lessons, grasshopper.

I went straight from an 85 to a 250f and hated life for the first two years. Almost quit

Too much changes all at once the bigger wheels alone are enough of a challenge

I hear ya. He’s ridden my 450 on the track and loves it. Just not quite tall enough for 250f or 125 yet, should be by 13.

If he was serious and raced more of the big races; then I’d get a 125. He does mostly local races so 250f will be perfect

The 125 makes you do all the things necessary to get -every- bit of power to the ground. That's a useful thrait to keep and use on ANY bike.

My youngest is moving off of superminis for the last year. We have a couple TC125's & a KX250F he can ride. He went back & forth but now almost always jumps on the 125. ONce we dialed in the engine added a STIC he likes the 250f style power with the weight of the 125. He says 125 is faster so only time he really chooses 250f is if it's slick & muddy........His brother went from wanting a 450 to preferring 125's also. The STIC was the reason........

like many said, 125 will improve your technique. It'll make you not rely on engine braking. It'll make you improve corner speed to hit the big jumps instead of relying on the torque of a 4 stroke. It'll make you work harder to go faster and when you get back on the 250, it'll be easier and you'll be faster.

Four strokes allow you to go fast with bad technique. Two strokes force good technique to go fast.

if you can go fast on your 125, you can go fast on anything.

Keep the 125 and really practice your technique and power management(keep it on the pipe).. once you can do that, you can transition to whatever your heart desires because you just taught yourself how to properly ride a motorcycle..

I started on a 100 and progressed to a 125, love them so much I have never wanted a bigger Mx bike. Obviously ridden friends bikes of all different strokes/sizes. But my little 125's keep me grinning. Do I feel I'm missing out, nope they are !

Simple answer...Ride that 125 as long as you want to...as long as you are having fun on it! That's all that matters, there is no right or wrong, everybody is different.

Like most of the posts above, KEEP the 125 and learn to ride it so fast and hard until the wheels fall off. If you can rip a 125 around balls-out, you'll jump on a 250f and feel like a super hero. But being a super-hero on a 125 sure sounds and feels much, much more satisfying. Technique, skill, and the endurance you acquire getting fast on a 2t is so beneficial to becoming a well-rounded rider. Not too mention, just the feeling of rev'ing a 125 to the moon and passing 4t's in the process, is one of the greatest feelings you can ever experience. I'm 39 now (how that happened so fast, I have no idea), but still ride a 150SX. Nothing makes me happier than passing pretty fast kids 20 years my junior on 250fs and seeing them look over their shoulder as my bike is screaming like it's about to explode scaring the living crap out of them, even though my heart rate is through the roof. I live for that feeling. ;-)

And just like Lightning78 said, you'll pull WAY more chicks ripping a 125 around the track balls-out than on ANY 4t.... 2-strokes for life, bud. Remember that. Good luck!

I would keep both.

When i was racing on both i had to ride harder on the 125 to go just as fast, when switching to the 250f the aggro skills had me going faster

If you can afford it, keep both. if you stop riding the 125 youll still be able to go back when you get the itch

My kid is currently 13 and on an 85. He will ride a 125 until he graduates high school. Need to learn to handle a big bike and have the strength to make it work. Way too many kids go to a 250f and just weed themselves. Learn how to go fast on a 125 and it makes them a way better rider.
