Tragic news from Millville

5/27/2009 2:55pm Edited Date/Time 5/27/2009 3:04pm
I'm Terry's niece, Kathleen. His sister Sharon is my mom. I just found
this site looking for news about Terry. What a great bunch of friends
he has in MX!!! I read some of the blogs to my mom over the phone. On
behalf of my mom and the rest of Terry's family, thank you all so much
for being such great friends to Terry!!!

I wanted to let you all know that there will be a vistation
tomorrow, Thursday, May 29, at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, on SW
9th & Kenyon (near Army Post Rd.) in Des Moines, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will
be at the same place on Friday, May 30, at 10 a.m. We were told to
expect a lot of people. There should be an open microphone where people
can tell their stories about Terry and celebrate his life.

I live in So. Cal. and am flying home early tomorrow for the
vistation and funeral. I was just home the weekend before May 25 and
saw Terry the day before he raced in Winterset. That was a few days
before Breck's "complete clusterfuck" with Terry and his new hotub.
That is just like Terry, and there must be hundreds of Terry stories
like that. I hope to hear more of them on Friday and meet many of his
great friends from MX.

The only thing Terry loved more than MX and Metal was his kids,
Tyler and Caitlin. He spent loads of time with them and was a great dad
to them.

Terry was a great guy, with a good heart underneath his rough
exterior. If nothing else, his dog Max gave him away. I loved Terry. I
always will.

Terry went the way he wanted to go, I think, but as usual his
timing sucked. Like Breck says, with Terry nothing ever went as
planned. But then, like Ashley says, life is too short, and Terry sure
did live it FULL THROTTLE!

Any of you can call me at 951-265-1882. Just know I'm on PST and
will be in the air Thursday morning until 2 p.m. Central. Thank you,
Jim and Cathy, for being with Terry. And thank you all, again, for
being such great friends to Terry.

Damn. I will never forget the story about the doctor and his 'not so new' shoes! RIP man.

Anybody know how Hickman is handling this?

I need to clarify my last post: Terry's visitation is tomorrow, Thursday, May 28, 4 to 8 pm and the funeral is on Friday, May 29, at 10 am. I had the days right but the dates wrong. Sorry.

Sorry for your loss Kathleen. Please post a digital guest book here if there is one. Terry had friends throughout the country.

I don't know how to put words down about something like this. I was lucky enough to know Terry, and I have to say he was always joking around and always looked to be having fun. I won't ever forget him ripping around the local tracks, standing up only when necessary and racing hard. Hopefully the tracks up above will be perfectly groomed for our friend!

Terry you will be sorely missed! You were a rare breed indeed we had alot of laughs together your passing makes us all come to grips on how short life really is. You lived fast and enjoyed life to the fullest and your dry sense of humour and your unforeseen out bursts of laughter always will bring a smile to my face when I think back of the good times we had! I still cannot believe you are gone but you will always be with the group of misfits (like myself & the others know who they are) today and forever!

Godspeed Terry!

Read and posted condolences earlier this morning before I actually realized I had met Terry.

Rocrac had called me and explained who Terry was.

We met at Mammoth East, a local race here in Indiana last Fall.

Terry's band was the entertainment for the evening, plus I'm pretty sure others from the band raced that day as well, besides Terry. Rocrac, introduced us and we had one helluva time partying it up that night!

He genuinely seemed to love what he was doing...motocross and heavy metal!

Such a shamed to loose someone who obviously has touched so many people.

Godspeed dude, and rock on!

Anyone with as many friends as he has all over the states had to be a great guy.

I'll find out about posting a digital guestbook, rocrac. It's such a comfort to know Terry had so many great friends all over the country.

I look forward to meeting those of you who can make it to the visitation and/or funeral. Breck from Des Moines, I have to find you!

Rip man! This sucks I have been racing for 22 years now and have known who Terry was for that 20. I was always intimidated to go up and talk to him because of his rough appearance. I still remember in 1992 at Kahoka Missouri for some reason they combined OPEN and the schoolboy class. Ok Stagger start us and I was working my way up through some of the Open riders. Do you know what its like to get roosted by this guy when he was on a BADA$$ CR 500 sheesh. I was glad when he finally tired and I got by him finally. But I have to say on Sunday at Montezuma we lined up next to each other both moto's. It was so cool sitting there finally 20 years later to talk to this guy. WE sat there bs b4 are motos and he was telling me about his Music and everything. The dude was awesome to talk to, his heart for racing was UNREAL.... He told me he was 51, and I told him I was 31 and he started laughing. Then he tells me he had been racing D22 since 1971 and Graduated in 1976. I was like wow this guy is hardcore. Its so wierd he told me that he was planning on a Millville trip. Im glad I finally got to spend a whopping 10 min talking to him. I learned alot about a guy that I would of never thought had that much talent in life. RIP Big Guy........ God Speed and Rock On!!!!!

Nice link Jim. Thanks for passing that along.

Condolences to all friends and family.

Terry touched so many people. It reminds us all how close of a family our racing community really is.

RIP, Terry. Didn't know him, but I wish I had. I was there racing on Monday, losing a fellow racer while you're at the track changes the way you look at mx. Really tough to see a helicopter take off slowly. Spring Creek got very quiet.

I don't know any details about the crash, but the track wasn't rough at all since there weren't many riders Monday. No ruts or anything on the jump, which is a simple step up to a tabletop, not a triple. Perfect weather, no wind, mint track. Not a spot you see many crashes at all.

My prayers are with his friends and family.

mxr102, I remember the same thing at Kahoka. I used to race the 250A and 16 to 24 class and they would do a staggered start and when i would try to pass him, the roost from his big cr500 would be crazy! I remember thinking of how glad I was to finally get around him. He was such a hard person to pass because that track was always so fast.
And you were right, he was always very intimidating because of his apperance. He always had that Gene Simmons look going on. The guy will be missed for sure! I still cant belive it. It was nice to see that Racer X payed tribute to him.

Today, well yesterday, was Terry's visitation. It was great to see so many people, people that haven't been around for years. Not just MX friends and family, his friends and family from Rock and his true Family. Jim Hickman, from Hickman Racing / Atomic 22 and Life long friend of Terry's, spent three 24 hour days maching a aluminium gutiar / urn for his ashes to be put in. Its freakin' awesome, if I can come up with pictures of it I will share.

I haven't really slept much the last few day, none at all in the last two. Today at 10AM is Terry's funeral service. Following the funeral service I will be at the shop getting Colin Hickmans bike ready for the North Central Regional at Spring Creek this weekend. It will defently be a tough race for us (#30 250A / 250A Pro Sport )as well as my father Mark (#6) who will be up there in the 40 and 45 classes also Jimi (#952, Highsider on here) will be in the 45 and 50 classes. Its tough for us all, but its the way that Terry wants it, so we gotta do it. If you're up there swing by and say hi!

Purdy whats up dude? Its Walton, what a small world. It's just weird how something like this brings friends back in contact with one another. Man it sucks anytime you loose a fellow MX buddy. Also Breck get a pic of that guitar and Ern Hickman made. I know what the guy is capable of. I just finally ficgured out who you were. HAHA! Anyways tell Collin Good Luck and to ride like he always does when he's in the groove. Maybe Terry can ride with him and help him kick some major a$$.

I've read this thread like 4 times now.

It's cool that I've learned about him through others, much respect to Terry and his life. Sounds like he had a great run.

Yes He WAS a VERY COOL DUDE take it from me, I played in bands with Terry for 20 plus years, I also raced back in the day with Jim Hickman, Johnny Spaw and the like, I was just a pup in the 100A class. Terry was the biggest hearted buddy I had by far, my best friend by leaps and bounds. Any question you may have about him, his life etc. Could probably be easily answered by me. I too am somewhat curious bout the details but, does it really matter considering the outcome? That heart attack rumor is pure B.S. guys, Terry was in superb physical condition and did NOT smoke so that's a load.
be happy to try to help ..... . . . .....ronnie rail
