I shouldn't be suprised that America has the most Covid 19 related deaths of any country when I see threads like this.

Yep
You shouldn't be surprised.
Especially if your fat.
Obesity at an all time high in the US.

Severe obesity increases the risk of a serious breathing problem called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is a major complication of COVID-19 and can cause difficulties with a doctor’s ability to provide respiratory support for seriously ill patients. People living with severe obesity can have multiple serious chronic diseases and underlying health conditions that can increase the risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Those dam facts again.

This virus has 100% reinforced the fact that America is the stupidest country on the planet. The whole world is in disbelief that you nuffies are protesting the lockdowns.

If the Stanford tests prove to be true, the rest of the world will thank us.

I’m shocked that some people think 40,000 odd deaths in 1 month DESPITE the measures put in place is ‘not that bad’

As others have said, the number of deaths is not why the country is being locked down. It is the number of deaths had the country NOT been locked down which is the more important number (albeit theoretical).

You are correct that obesity is a huge risk factor for having extra complications and/or death from Covid19.

However, I think the other guy's point is more about the extent of the spread of Covid19 in America due to some people's dismissive attitudes.

The relevant stat is this one:

America has roughly 4% of the population of the World.
America has roughly 30% of the Covid19 cases in the World.

By anyone's measure, this is a poor performance. We weren't the worst in the world at letting this spread, but we are close.

I really really want to ride.

I like Perris, and I have a completely rebuilt just like new KTM with new wheels and suspension that needs to be broken in. My kids are both dying to ride too.

BUT- I don't want to risk getting covid and bringing It home to the family or spreading it within my company - some people are asymptomatic super spreaders, I don't want to be in that group.

So, if Perris gets their way and manages to get permission to open before the virus subsides, I won't be giving them any business for now.

The unselfish thing to do is wait this out for a while longer. There is no other reasonable option.

This is true. But could it because we're testing at a high rate, thus the higher number of people infected?

pretty easy to say that when you are out in the middle of nowhere... we get more international travelers in some of our cities in a month than you do in your entire country on an annual basis.

on top of that, we have the right to tell our government to step the hell back if they are infringing on our bill of rights... pandemic or not.

so while you are on your high horse out in the middle of nowhere, lets take a look at those numbers. lets take alaska.... only about 200 miles from the lower 48 but none the less.... separated from the mainland... no less beautiful that where you live (though significantly richer in natural resources)... also, completely bordered by another country (which you have the luxury of not having to deal with). on the whole.... the numbers are pretty similar per capita as your country.... not to mention that you are in the summer/fall time and have the luxury of not having to spend so much time indoors like the people of alaska just coming out of winter.

so you my friend.... can fuck the hell right off. if the shit were to really hit the fan world wide.... would you really have that attitude toward us? how dare you insult my country or the people in it... you don't have a leg to stand on.

for god sakes you are on an American owned website getting your entertainment. other than cheese and wool, what the fuck do you guys do down there or produce for the world... especially during this crisis?

sorry for the derailment.... but these self righteous assholes from other countries telling us how we should conduct ourselves on our soil piss me right the hell off.... when your country becomes arguably the most prosperous nation on the planet i think it is doing something right....

are we perfect.... nope.... but would i want to live anywhere else in the world.... not a fucking chance. and i have been in your neck of the woods hunting. and by the way, hunting elk that were imported from my country and red stag that were imported from Europe. i wouldn't have really even been able to contribute to your economy on those trips if it weren't for the natural resources in mine.

The only problem with this statement is that the US is not testing at a very high rate compared to the rest of the world.
Whilst the number of tests is the highest, the number per capita is about 30th (excluding extremely small countries like Lichtenstein)

Yes. Exactly my point. Despite all the sky is falling crap on the news, the actual death rate of our whole population is 1 tenth of 1 percent. Those numbers aren't debatable.
Btw, in response to the OP.

We have a track here in Indiana that got permission from the state to have open riding next Saturday if they limit it to 50 people. You had to reserve a spot for the morning or afternoon session. But we're not far away from phase one, maybe 2 weeks. So hopefully they can reopen normally.
I noticed yesterday Minnesota opened up their tracks and all outdoor activities but still want social distancing. Some states get it.

This argument you guys are making that is along the lines of "see, it's not that bad, look at the numbers" is a bunch of nonsense.

Much of the country is closed, the measures have been taken and you are looking at the results of those measures and saying "see, it's not that bad".

It's like me telling you to not play Russian Roulette because you might die.... so you don't play Russian Roulette.... but then you say, "see I'm not dead, Russian Roulette is not as dangerous as you told me."

If you look at the countries around the world, the vast overall trend is that countries that took early action and hardcore measures like South Korea and Taiwan did great. Countries with delayed or weak responses like Italy and Spain did terrible. There are exceptions, but this is the overriding trend. Our response in the USA was also delayed, two weeks into March the numbers were looking very grim, but on March 15, 16, 17 the country was swept by unprecedented measures to stop the spread. Luckily we were able to turn the tide very quickly and almost all the spikes are turning downward now..... because of what we did, not because of "see, it's not that dangerous".

I am not saying I think we need to stay closed for months longer, I think those decisions need to be made at the local level. But to claim this thing wasn't dangerous and didn't have potential to wipe out a lot of people is ludicrous. The things we did saved us.
I wasn't saying it's no big deal. It's a bad virus for sure. I simply said the odds of dying from it are very very small.

According to the CDC 647,000 Americans die each year from heart disease. The vast majority due to obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and/or lack of exercise. Unfortunately, many of these people are falling victim to the virus. Sad but true.

Imo we can go outside and do things, like ride and still distance. We did it last weekend. My wife and I do it everyday. But we do live in a more rural area where there's lots of things to do outside.

I'll just leave it here. As the president said, we can't let the cure be worse than the problem. I think in many states we're close to that being the case. The toll it's taking on people mentally and financially is going to get much worse. Not to mention what it's doing to businesses and our economy. Plus, there's a direct relationship between a higher unemployment rate and an increase in suicide, domestic abuse and substance abuse.

Whilst I don't like agree with Lucifer's slightly aggressive stance. (and i also dont agree with the very aggressive attack back at NZ)

and I agree, NZ has a very different set of circumstances that help them fight this pandemic.

I will however point out one big error in your comments. you said "on the whole.... the numbers are pretty similar per capita as your country"

That is not even close. NZ has 2 deaths per million people. The US has 123.

And I understand youdont like being told how to act on your own soil. however please note that others feel the same way when Americans tell them how to act on their own soil.

For the record, I love NZ both the people and the country, I love the US, and have visited for business and pleasure many times and I love my home country of Australia.

"the whole world is in disbelief?" you are literally one of the furthest removed from it.... literally and figuratively.

honestly, how long do you really think the world economy can stay shut down before it completely collapses? not being a smartass.... it is an honest to goodness question.

keep it shut down another 6 months and the chaos that will ensue from the complete anarchy that will take place will make the death from this virus look like a walk in the park. this isn't fear mongering.... it is what will take place when power is shut off because there is no incentive to work in the energy industry.... which will also makes it impossible to drive vehicles (let alone maintenance, transportation or sanitation vehicles).... it is a massive snowball effect from there and it will happen nearly as quick as this virus has spread.

nobody in our country is saying lets just open the economy and fuck social distancing guidelines.... we are saying that our liberties are being infringed on and we as American civilians have the right.... actually it is our duty to let our government (who buy the way work for us.... not the other way around) know when they are infringing on those rights. WE DONT NEED OUR GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT US FROM OURSELVES. we are intelligent enough to take the guidelines to heart and follow them while at the same time keep our economy and our way of life functioning.

the few that are complaining in our country AND abroad don't seem to realize (or have conveniently forgotten) that the whole reason the shelter in place was put into effect was to flatten the curve...... NOT SHELTER IN PLACE UNTIL WE HAVE A VACCINE. we are and in most places HAVE flattened the curve. now we have to strike a balance between keeping things under control enough to not overwhelm the health system while AT THE SAME TIME reopen the rest of our livelihood. we as americans are certainly smart enough to do both.

if you want to stay locked in your homes for 12-18 months that is fine.... if your economy takes a shit, we, as well as the world really won't feel it all that much (even though we would probably be the first ones to help you out). if our economy takes a shit, i promise YOU WILL FEEL IT.

Are you saying the amount of deaths is concerning?
I'm just trying to be clear on your statement.

We are testing at a high rate, where we need it. Many states have little or no virus so they're not testing in those states as much. That will skew those numbers. I live in Indiana and we're not a hot spot, so they just test as needed. I have a friend here who has it. She wasn't feeling good last week. Walked right in to the local er and got tested in minutes. It's been a bit rough for her but today she was outside walking. Doing ok.

My point is in response to the op. I feel we can ride and distance. At some point we have to.

My only point was that the numbers in the US aren't just because you are testing at a high rate. Most of the developed world is testing at similar rates.
The number of deaths is probably the ultimate number to see how a country is tracking with this Virus and the US is not tracking well by that metric (although not the worst on a per capita basis but somewhere about 10th)

I live in Los Angeles and about 2% of the population has been tested. It's around the same percentage statewide, maybe a percent or two higher. That is not testing at a high rate by any standard.

Understood, Apologies for mis-reading your post.

Looking at the numbers, Hawaii is still a little over 3 times the deaths per capita as NZ and Alaska 6 times more.

Things in this part of the world are going comparatively well, understanding that we have some geographic advantages.
However that being said we also have a very large percentage of visitors from China, and we are rightly proud of how our citizens, healthcare systems and governments have handled the pandemic. (in my opinion anyway)

Saying that, we still have a very long way to go, its still early days.

One thing I and I think everyone can agree on is that every nation has people with their heads up their asses. haha

You need give it a rest at some point.
You don't even live in this wonderful country of ours, and you really have no idea how many of us live. We're a country of 330 million very diverse people from very diverse states. One size does not fit all. especially now.

Our economy drives the world, plain and simple. And if we don't get it back up and running the world will be hurting even more. It can be done in a smart way. And I think our presidents team will do just that.

pretty easy to say that when you are out in the middle of nowhere... we get more international travelers in some of our cities in a month than you do in your entire country on an annual basis.

on top of that, we have the right to tell our government to step the hell back if they are infringing on our bill of rights... pandemic or not.

so while you are on your high horse out in the middle of nowhere, lets take a look at those numbers. lets take alaska.... only about 200 miles from the lower 48 but none the less.... separated from the mainland... no less beautiful that where you live (though significantly richer in natural resources)... also, completely bordered by another country (which you have the luxury of not having to deal with). on the whole.... the numbers are pretty similar per capita as your country.... not to mention that you are in the summer/fall time and have the luxury of not having to spend so much time indoors like the people of alaska just coming out of winter.

so you my friend.... can fuck the hell right off. if the shit were to really hit the fan world wide.... would you really have that attitude toward us? how dare you insult my country or the people in it... you don't have a leg to stand on.

for god sakes you are on an American owned website getting your entertainment. other than cheese and wool, what the fuck do you guys do down there or produce for the world... especially during this crisis?

sorry for the derailment.... but these self righteous assholes from other countries telling us how we should conduct ourselves on our soil piss me right the hell off.... when your country becomes arguably the most prosperous nation on the planet i think it is doing something right....

are we perfect.... nope.... but would i want to live anywhere else in the world.... not a fucking chance. and i have been in your neck of the woods hunting. and by the way, hunting elk that were imported from my country and red stag that were imported from Europe. i wouldn't have really even been able to contribute to your economy on those trips if it weren't for the natural resources in mine.

I'm just commenting on an issue that is effecting the whole world on a massive massive scale.
I think my opinion on an internet forum is just as worthwhile (or worthless haha) as anyone else's.

Or are we only allowed to comment if we align with a certain narrative?

I am not attacking the US at all, my opinion that is is not going well in the US is coming from a place of compassion. and judging by the comments in this thread, many Americans have similar thoughts to me, and many don't. That's OK.

I live in Los Angeles and about 2% of the population has been tested. It's around the same percentage statewide, maybe a percent or two higher. That is not testing at a high rate by any standard.
when i see this testing statement come up that "we aren't testing enough"..... i have to ask the question, do any of the people that say this really understand the magnitude of the job at hand JUST TO PRODUCE 334,000,000 TESTS? and that is just to test every person in our country just one time..... forget that the millions of health care workers, police, fireman and the like should probably be tested weekly.

honestly, i don't have any idea what 334 million of anything looks like let alone would i know what it would take to produce 334 million individual pieces of a product.

oh, and don't forget those tests have to be administered and then the tests have to be ran to get the result.

so as an example.... lets say as a nation we started producing our own tests at a rate of 250,000 per day (which would be on an amazing scale).... it would take ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX DAYS to produce all of them. let me do the math for you... that is 3.66 YEARS!!!!!!

LETS, FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES SAY THAT WE HAD THE ABILITY TO PRODUCE MILLION A DAY. it would still take nearly A YEAR just to make enough of the tests to test each american ONE TIME. should we stay sheltered in place for that long?

lets not forget.... WE THEN HAVE TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO RUN ALL THOSE TESTS.

in theory testing everyone is a near perfect solution.... in reality...... it is nearly impossible.

What the hell is wrong with America! We have devolved into sheer incompetence. Everyone thinks they are as smart as a MD or PhD when in fact they are idiots. Look at South Korea. The US and South Korea reported their first cases ON THE SAME DAY. SK is now reporting less than TEN new cases per day. The US has 4000+ deaths per day. What is the difference? SK is a society that respects and abides by professional credentials and expertise. Their government solicited the advice of public health experts and they acted. Their citizens followed the proclamations made by the government. The US has the same level, or better of public health and medical expertise yet we are failing in comparison. America needs to look in the mirror. Are we OK with incompetence looking back at us?

South Korea used digital tracking, credit card transaction data, mobile phone tracking and surveillance cameras to track people. Unfortunately, or fortunately, that privacy violation would never fly here.

SK is 15% of our size. OK. Based on GDP they have only 8.5% of our resources .... and they did it. Why don’t you look at the scope of what was done with The Manhattan Project in WWII for instance. You are a perfect example of the incompetence that now permeates America. “Impossible” you say. Go read history. We did things ten times as impossible in the past. It is impossible only for people like you. I could tell you exactly how to do it for about 100Billion $....which is peanuts in the big scheme of things.

Life Lesson: Dont believe every thing you read on a BLOG

Most Koreans voluntarily downloaded an app that allows their movements to be tracked so they could identify who has been at risk.
They all agreed to play by the rules and do the right thing and now their cases are incredibly low and things are going back to normal.
