Are there any shops that do MX frame repairs? Can't really seem to find MX specific ones but have been able to find other random shops. Would like to know the people doing the frame are going to do the job correctly the first time. If anybody has any good references that would be awesome as I don't really know where to look exactly.

TIA

Steel frame, it's a 2003 KX125. Has a small dent on the frame but with everything taken off it looks completely straight. The dent looks more like an indentation in the metal rather than it actually bending anything. Even if its all straight, I'd like to get it looked at by a professional and also fixed to make it look new again.

Apologies for the wait, had to wait until I got back home. This was done by the previous owner so I have no clue how it got there or what did it.

Tough one, is the frame bent in as well or is it just the dent? I dont think there is much you can do without cutting that section out, and then it wouldnt be cost effective. RMATV has OEM frames for $950 to give you a baseline cost. You will need to strip the frame and take it to a machine shop and have them inspect and quote the work.

It doesnt appear that the frame shape is pushed to the side or bent, its just got that nasty dinged piece, I would say its probably best to clean it up, inspect welds for cracking and push a fresh powder coat on it. Most i would do is get the welds redone around that area but thats it.

If it is does not have a puncture hole, crack or is bent, it is just cosmetic. I would have no problem filling the dent with body filler, sanding, priming and painting over the repaired area. If you are super OCD you may be able to get a welder or body person to weld a stud in the dent, heat it up & pull the dent out slightly before you begin you apply skim coat of filler before painting.

Yeah nothing appears to be wrong. The ride, the angles, etc. Looks and rides true. I just want to make sure the "indentation" is just purely that. Everything else looks sound but you never know until its vapor blasted/sand blasted. As far as rideability, it rides amazing. Love this bike. Just want to get the frame redone anyway so a proper frame shop for this type of thing I wouldnt mind sending. Want it to be finished and looking good.

As far as RMATV having frames in stock, I didnt know. Have looked everywhere else for an OEM frame and figured none of them would have it in stock at the rate. I'll take a look.

Filling the dent with weld is also what I was thinking. I just want to be sure everything is right. Would like it to ride like it did from the factory etc. Just want it to be right. But as long as the frame is right which a professional could tell me, i would run it with welds finished right. Totally down.

That’s what I’d do, weld it up, thin layer of body filler if you want to, and paint. It’s not a pro race bike, well maybe it is, but it’s an old one if so, and any difference in flex or whatever people will say will happen from welding will not be noticeable or cause problems in the least, a buddy of mine put a pretty big dent in his New ktm when it tipped over in his garage onto a jack stand or something. About the same place as well, but he just left his as is.

Deffinantly not a pro race bike but former racer that would like to make it race ready for whatever 125 class race would be awesome. That being said, does anybody know of any frame shops that do alot of MX frame work? If I have to I'll buy a new frame if its in stock but would like to know of other options even if I have another bike that's in worse condition.

I wouldn't sweat it, re-paint the frame or PC and it won't be that noticeable.

If i did anything (I don't think i would based on the photos), weld it up and then smooth it out to blend the weld in with a flap disc. I wouldn't use bondo/filler that would likely crack over time as the chassis flexes and make it look like crap.

Alternative option, have you checked Facebook, craigslist, ebay for a used frame if it bothers you? May be a cheaper option to a new frame.

Yeah, 03' frames are a bit like hens teeth. 04' and up look similar but they have differences in linkage and also exhaust mounting so it has to be an 03' frame. But I would also do the same, just weld over the dent and make it all look flush with the frame again. Finding a frame that doesnt have a dent would be great but it's a search that is a long one in the used market. Mainly because they rarely pop up. 03' is what they call a "bastard" year.

Without a thorough, in person examination on my part, if it is just a 'Ding', or collection of (I'm stuck on a 'phone screen at the moment), I'd get it brazed / bronze welded up. Then, file / linish / sand it back to shape.

That's assuming you are going to pull the frame down, and repaint it after whatever type of repair you do. It's a far more permanent and stronger repair than body filler etc. Though, you could just strip the body work etc, and protect the engine, and then paint that area, that would not be much larger than a body filler job.

You'd be able to find highly competent 'gas bottle brazers' pretty much everywhere, or, a TIG specialist to do it. Though, you might find quite a few such 'specialists' that don't even know bronze welding can be done with TIG. TIG Bronze / Brass welding, puts less heat into the base metal, compared to gas torching it.

Yes, you could fill the dings with MIG wire, or cut out the ding(s) and plate patch it, but, generally, that would be quite visibly a point of repair. Things like Puckering (MIG especially) , or the 'patch' repair not having the same contours as the original tube profile, etc. I could produce a non visible, strong, cut and plate, but I've TIG'd / fabricated frames for over 4 1/2 decades now, and that, would be far more $$$$$$ than the braze / bronze welding 'fill in'.

Though, of course, the body filler / epoxy alternative, well, you could do it yourself, for bugger all. Whistling

I've looked before recently across 2/3of the country and had no luck after a month. The bikes are hard to find and someone parting one out even more so

Fill the dent with a weld and grind it smooth.
