How far the sport has come since Pace

Edited Date/Time 2/25/2020 1:29pm
I see a ton of complaints on here about the SX broadcasts and it got me thinking. Who else remembers back in the late 90s when the only way to get live updates was to watch the text updates on the Pace Supercross website? Haha I probably use to reload that page 1000 times a race.
I guess what I’m trying to say is my 10 year old self is pretty happy with the current coverage.

The 800-RACE to get results was an expensive phone call, just to get results. I will admit to using this to “know” who won

It’s come a long, long way. The only thing I would say is the same is probably the purse money.

Everything has progressed in the world of communication. I remember rushing to get Monday morning's paper to see who won the NASCAR race the day before...

I'm thinking the Futurestars live timing platform is a beta test of whats coming for supercross...It's a little clunky to say the least, but you can see the potential. All made possible by IoT and the gathering of multiple data points which with the help of 5G can be filtered and delivered to provide individualized real time data to the end user.

Yeah, I agree with that. Every other, and I mean every other pro sport has increased wages a ton in the past 20 years.

Obviously the teams pay the riders. But for example the purse for the NHL stanley cup doubled in 2013 to $13 million. Yes, they have a players union which fought for that in the last collective bargaining agreement...

I'm not familiar with that platform. The one thing I think the Legit pay broadcast is missing is the ability to live chat with other people while watching the race...I sometimes miss watching it on Twitch for that reason.

Not entirely true

No purse on MXGP's
No purse is MotoGP
No purse in WSBK
No purse in F1

NHL gets paid millions on TV contracts, not to mention fan paraphernalia

When was last time you saw a Carioli jersey, a Vale46 t-shirt or even a Cooper Webb jersey at the local Walmart?

The differences in money generated between bike racing and "stick and ball" sports is staggering
I believe Feld is STILL paying NBC/NBCSN to put the races on TV live.....They pay the networks to air it

Good points. But really, the purse should be raised. Just do the rough calculations on Stadium size and ticket prices (which go up as they do). I think they can afford a bit of a raise to the riders.....But I wasn't trying to make this thread about the purse size. More about the crazy ways people use to get their Moto fix.

I've asked dozens and dozens of times and no one ever does it....

Jot down in your reply an estimate of every single expense you can think of in operating a SX race....rent, security, a fleet of trucks, drivers, "stage hands," electricians, pyrotechnics, per diems, hotels, rental cars, salaries, airfare, F&B, insurance, TV production, talent, getting it on TV and so much more...then how much is Feld allowed to make per event?

How much profit is too much profit? What's the cap?

Looking at prior events locations like Houston, I'd assume that it's not profitable enough under about 40k attendance. If you can't fill the seats, and there are 17 rounds to make money, locations can get dropped. Not saying NO profit, just not enough.

When you consider that the promoter doesn't get to participate in the $40 cash parking ($35 by card to eliminate theft) the $9 beers, $12 drinks, and the same for overpriced crappy food concessions that is lost income in a BIG way.

The break even nut to even open the doors for an event like this have got to end with an M for millions.

Pace and Goodwin were some bold risk takers as promoters, and that continues over to today.

Oh, and remember, it could rain and toast attendance numbers

(oh yeah, then you need to pay for rain out insurance)

In the 80s, it was Cycle News and MXA, and then once a month, we'd get video updates on Motoworld. I definitely prefer the current live race format, even with all of its hiccups.

The amount of coverage has improved, the quality has not.

The ESPN era shows were superior and showcased the sport in a much better light.

Please bitches.... Waiting patiently for mxa or db magazine to show up monthly was an art form....

I kinda miss that world. Instant gratification has done irreparable damage to society... despite its benefits.

No I get it. I've grown up in a family that has a few small businesses so I get that overhead for events of this kind are incredibly high.

One of my parents friends who had the cheater American satellite use to tape it and then I would get the tape a couple days after it aired. Like a black market moto tape bootleg ring.

I'd like to think that teenaged kids today that are core moto would go to same lengths that we all use to....but I'm not so sure. I don't even know what the modern day equivalent would be.

I like the direction NBC is going with it. The best it was for Canada was between like 08 and 15 when Speed Channel had it live in Canada. You got Speed with the regular sports package so it was easy. Plus when Race Day Live was free online. That was the best at least for Canadian viewers. I do like the Way NBC presents the sport. But it was more convenient on Speed.

That's your breakeven number 40K? I don't even think there would be a series if that were the case. Who would take that risk? I could be totally wrong though.

We also can't forget that the riders still pay an entry fee. Everyone who has ever had an industry pass knows they aren't free either. They have huge title sponsors. These are all substantial revenue streams.

40k attendance X average ticket price of $40.00 = $1.6M + sponsors

And we know for sure they never get a cut of concessions or parking? Or do different promoters/venues have different deals?

All that being said I appreciate Feld and the effort it takes to run such a huge production. Even on Pulp last night they were trying to come up with ideas to increase the purse. I think JT said like a pass the hat type idea.

Venue leasing, concessions and parking are 99.9% exclusive to venue owner. Tickets are split, usually 70-30'to promoter, always negotiated out though. Stadium leasing isnt as expensive as suggested, it isnt 7 figures. Low 6 figure for something like SX. Stadium owners would rather make a little money on an off weekend vs losing money. 300k Total profit to lease for an sx event is better than paying security to watch an empty parking lot, besides, Feld has to pay the venue staff for the event. When they lease, they assume payroll for the time they are in the facility.

Ok, Thanks for the info. I'm not anti Feld in any way. It's their series, they take all the risk therefore it's their right to split the pie how they want.

Feld misses out on the food and suites. The stadium owners know how to make money. We had a suite this past weekend ($5,000) at AT&T Stadium. Soda, water, popcorn, m&m's, pizza (5), cookies and coffee - $1,400. No alcohol in that number. Note to self, New Life Goals - own a stadium.

OK, but cap their profitability

How much are they allowed to make, on the investment, costs and risks?

How much is too much to make, per event

Keeping in mind, this is a billion(s) dollar earning company.....Juice has to be worth the sqeeze

So, how much is too much?

Oh, rider entry fees and all of that stuff goes to AMA, not Feld

Also don't forget, in a number of venues, they have to buy new sod....not regular sod, but a special sod.

Anaheim is an example
New turf every year
