After 19 years of having a fused ankle, I just had surgery 2 days ago to do an ankle replacement. Yes they can do an ankle replacement now on a fused ankle. I’m at home recovering from this surgery right now. It’s amazing what new stuff they can come up with.

If you don't mind sharing please, How would you describe life with the Fused ankle? How are your other joints? All the best! Thanks
Hi mate,
I don’t have any pain or discomfort in joints and I ride 2-3 days a week and ride MTB and go to gym most other days.
Only things I can’t do is run ( without looking like a complete fool ) and squats in the gym.
I’m 75kgs, so maybe that has a bit to do with my joints not wearing out faster

Whoa. Been a while since my last post in this topic. Thought for a while I was going to do the fusion. After much research I ran across PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy for pain management and healing. First round was at a little over a year out from the injury and results were outstanding. Went in for an additional round a few months after the first and the results weren’t as good as the first but still apparent. Do a search here on vital on PRP as I went into a little more detail. I am approaching 2 years from my accident and still getting better every day. I am sure that arthritis will take over at some point but at 51 y/o I am doing my best to stay active on the daily. To be honest I know that fushion was an option for me at one point but I am glad I chose otherwise and when the time comes ankle replacement will probably be what I need. Hoping that would be atleast 10 years away. Good luck to any and all with this type of injury, was a game changer for sure. I empathize with your struggle and glad I made it through. (per say).

Hey guys, it’s been awhile since I posted about my ankle replacement. It will be 1 year next month since my replacement. It’s been rough to say the least. I started out having a lot of pain walking on it the first 8-9 months so I went back to my surgeon for some answers. He did an X-ray and he noticed that bone was growing into the implant joint and that it could refuse the joint again and that is probably where my pain is coming from. He has only seen this happen once in his 1300+ replacements that he’s done. I’m the 2 nd. He suggested that he goes in and shaves down the bone to free up the implant. Now when I decided to get the replacement, I wasn’t looking for movement because it has been fused for 19 years and I’m used to not having movement, I was just looking to become pain free. He also said that it could take 2 years for me to become pain free. I told him no on the gutter clean out as they call it. It’s weird because in just the last 3-4 weeks the pain is almost gone. I think the implant has fused itself with the bone that’s been growing into it. I think I’m just going to go forward without anymore surgeries and see how it goes. During this whole ankle fiasco, I got hooked back on the pain meds again after being clean for 2 years. Almost ended my marriage so I’m back in recovery and am doing good. 222 days clean today and feeling great.

This is why I was hesitant taking anything other then tylenol after my ankle surgery tibia fib and talus break. The doctors and nurses pushed hard for me to take hydrocodone. Weird how they really push that stuff

See that’s what’s so funny to my about doctors and pain management specialists now.

You either have the doc who wouldn’t give you a Tylenol if your femur was through the skin, or a doc who hands them out like chiclets.

Fortunately for me after my 2nd refusion back in June (got slid into at home plate playing softball, shattered my already fused ankle

It’s been pretty shit as of late, damn near to the point I am ready to lop it off below the kneezzzz

Luckily my pain management guy gets that I work on my feet for a living, and has me on a strict regiment of pain meds that are treating me well 6 months post op.

Good luck to all of you battling addiction and pain, but know you’re not alone

Yup, lots of people just got cut off pain meds cold turkey after taking them for years. I’m a union carpenter so I know about being on your feet all day. That’s also why I’m not going to have another surgery again. I’m not ready for another prescription of pain meds.

Look I don’t know you or anyone else from Adam on here, but while I know it’s not a permanent solution, I am very thankful my doc get it’s.

I’ve been in chronic pain from putting both Tib/fibs outta the bottom of both my heals at the same time when I was 14....up until the most recent break I could always “grin and bare it”, but not this time....

Currently my options from here are a Tense unit implanted into my spine, full nerve ablation, or amputation. Knowing my pain killers aren’t a long term solution maybe makes it a bit easier in my mind, but again I am very thankful for them as they do allow me to get through work and take me daughter to the park everyday.

If any of you boys wanna talk about our fucked legs and dealing with the pain let me know, I’d gladly PM you my info
