Yes, nothing turns like an RM. However, it isn't my pick for my only bike.
Why? Ive ridden em all and even owned a valve-muncher once. Nothing matches the fun return-on-investment like the RM250. Reliable. Light. Cheap to buy & maintain. Easy to start always. Awesome engine all-around. Carburetor! Proven steel frame. Turns like no other. I like how it looks. I always get a smile when Im riding it.
Oh yeah, no valve train.

i currently own a 2008 KXF 450 &250 with pro circuit engine mods and had my suspension done by them as well, i went to MTF for a week and barrowed a 09 CRF. it was as fast if not faster than my personal 450
-Cornering is second to none.
-Handles very well and is not a very heavy bike.
-Ergonomics are very natural, especially for taller riders like me.
-Motor is simply incredible. Pulls from way down low and revs to the moon with no crazy hit anywhere in the rpm range.
-It is an elegantly simple motorcycle that is very easy to work on.
-The suspension, when set up properly, is excellent.
-The cool factor is hard to beat.
-The sound of a big bore piston port engine is sweet, sweet music.
-Holeshots!
there's an article in the newest dirt rider about the "best overall dirt bike" they did a lengthy test out at Rynoland of moto, offroad, singles track, turning, etc. Several manufacturers and aftermarket companies entered bikes. I think there was around 20 bikes entered. They narrowed it down to 6 finalists and the winner was a KTM 300XC.
funny you guys are mentioning RM 250s. FMF entered a 2005 RM 250 in the test and narrowly missed making the final 6. Although DR did mention it was the best bang for the buck as most of the bikes were newer, modded out 4 strokers, and the 3 yr old 250 2 stroke was still very competitve.
as for my choice, for one bike that would be a modified KX 250F or CRF250. I still would love to try a KTM 300 though. those things sound like a blast!
I didn't jump down the peristyle this lap because the rider in front of me rolled off the edge. You can just barely see his fender in the lower right part of the photo. I did get to jump down it a few times and it was a total blast!

I think it's the best bike out there on the track.
(I've got my eye on an 08 KTM 300 XC-W, right now...the only reason I'd take the XC over the XC-W if I could only have one bike is because the XC would be more suited for MX and trails. Right now I've got a 2006 CRF 250 for moto, and I need a purpose built single track/woods bike that has the top speed to go really fast in the desert and the wide ratio tranny on the XC-W fits that bill perfectly.)
Or maybe a person that are enable to ever qualify to the shitty Swedish Nationals needs a 60 hp CR500AF? Maybe that's what's separates him from success?
I also agree with everyone on the RM, I owned an 05 RM250 and loved that bike!
