Riding with broken ribs 2 weeks after is a really bad decision. Crashing again on them will result in displaced ribs that can puncture vital internal organs. I broke 5 in June and am not riding until 8 months to ensure they’re fully mended.
Are you really waiting 8 months? I broke 4 ribs, 2 displaced, 2 weeks ago and Doc said 6-8 weeks. I was really hoping for that. I do wanna get the thumbs up from Doc before riding again.

I've seen this topic a few times. I think the answer is obvious. After extensive research, my choice is The HRP Flak Jacket for obvious reasons if you've ever seen one. From the shoulder cups with webbing to the extensive and complete front and back coverage to the outstanding rib protection. Buy the extra rib belt, it's saved me from numerous bars to the gut, and I'm sure I've dodged a few broken ribs no doubt)

"Dress for the crash, not the ride" << funny story - I casually mentioned this to a friend, he did the same to one of his buds and the next time he saw him he had the phrase tattooed on his arm.

Agree, I'm thinking that was a typo and he meant 8 weeks.

8 months seems a little long....unless you fileted yourself ala Dr D.....or you wear suspenders with a belt. I'm no doctor but I would think a good 6-8 weeks and no pain when coughing would be on the safe side.

IMO. The only thing worse than riding with unhealed ribs is riding too soon after a concussion.

Yes, Dr said I could ride at 8 weeks, but it would take 8 months to be fully mended back to original strength. Since it’s a critical location, I want to be safe.

LOL. Sounds about right, like he's trying to cover his ass. Docs said I'd never be able to play contact sports after I broke my neck in '83. I was skiing big mountain backcountry the next winter and racing jet skis the next summer. Granted, I didn't race motocross again for 10 years but that's just because I was scared. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I wonder how you rehab and "strengthen" ribs? other than just body rotations (I know you strengthen bone by stressing the area) It's such a weird injury - they Xray you, make sure you can move the Spirometer enough - (hopefully they don't stick a tube in your chest) before you get released. No cast, no surgery, maybe an ACE bandage so they can charge you for it - just tell you don't sneeze, maybe sleep in an easy chair! I never really thought broken ribs were a big deal.......until I broke a few and had to sleep in a chair for a month. This helped me quite a bit as soon as I was able to use it, check it out. Power lung looks interesting, how often does it get used, 3x day or ?
I had a punctured lung with my broken ribs. When that happens, an air pocket can form (aka Pneumothorax) that puts pressure on your heart, if large enough can cause cardiac arrest. It’s discovered by X-ray, and is relieved by inserting a large needle through the chest. I had one, but luckily it didn’t get large enough to require relieving it. Concerned me enough though to make sure the ribs are healed enough.
Broken ribs can be life threatening if not properly diagnosed. Some people have had their heart punctured by broken ribs and died within minutes.
