KFW I apologize if there was some misunderstanding on the verbal quote. Rebuilding an engine, transmission, and crankshaft using all original Yamaha bearings, seals, gaskets, rod kit, and piston would be around $1100-$1200 parts and labor. This would include inspecting every component of the engine, clutch, and transmission, blasting the cases to look like new again, and applying 30 plus years of experience in assembling an engine that easily lasts another 15 years. The 2K quote would have included other items discussed such as big bore cylinder work, custom porting work, head combustion chamber re-shaping etc. A job is never started without there being a written proposal of parts and labor with a total that includes return shipping. I am always personally available for anyone to call or email for pricing info and I will provide as close an estimate as possible prior to actually seeing the engine.
Thanks for clarifying Tom, I didn’t do a good job describing “rebuilding my 2005 motor bottom and top for 2K.“. For me I took rebuilding bottom and top to mean porting, reshaping etc. my apologies if I overstated pricing.

Mick I will be watching for your cylinders to arrive.
Tom, you did my CR250 cylinder and head last year and I wanted to say thanks, not only for how it ran but for the level of service you provided. Having grown up racing two-strokes, I thought I had a pretty good idea of jetting, tuning etc. I learned more in a couple evenings of reading your tuning guide you sent with the mods than I learned during all my two stroke years of racing. I like to ride (duh), but I’m also a tinkerer who likes to study all things mechanical and it was fun to learn so much from your knowledge base.

Thanks O'Malley! I appreciate you having me do the work for you. I am happy to share my knowledge and always available if you should have any questions.

Tom is the best in the business. He had 3 engines at Straight Rhythm, including mine and they all ripped.

Had an issue with the head on a Saturday before Straight Rhythm, sent next day for CA to WI. He got it welded up, reshaped to spec, new billet decompression and back in my hands from WI to CA that Thursday. Can't thank him enough for that. Pretty amazing!

Probably have like 1,000 emails back and forth and he always takes the time to answer them quickly.

Another vote for TM here. To add to the list of verified good builders including TM; 1. Tom Morgan Racing, 2. Eric Gorr Racing, 3. Watts Perfection.

Trusting someone in the engine building department is super hard, in todays world, we have scheming vaporblasting bastards, I do all engine building myself now that i have figured out all these guys little tricks. im not going to mention any names, but i sent a 450 head out to have the valve seats installed and cut for new valves and to install valves and bench shim valve train and sent it back with super thin shims to where after the first valve adjustment the head had to have the seats bored out and re install new seats again,

then my experience with 2 stroke engine is Sent the cylinder off to get re-done, cylinder came back plating was in good shape but missed standard bore size by .20mm Powervalves also werent cleaned and inspected like said.

Good luck to whatever path you may choose just remember, Just cause its a big company or a big name doesnt mean they do work that is 100% caring for YOU the Customer!
