I believe you will pay taxes for the state/county that you live in. If you buy from a dealer they will ask for your address and should collect tax for that state/county at the time of sale and then send the paperwork to your state/county office so they can file it. For a new bike, no current title exists, so you will be provided with a "certificate of origin" which you will then exchange for a title at some point after the paperwork is processed.

If you buy used from a private seller you wont have to pay tax at the time of purchase but they will make you pay taxes when you go to get the title from the county clerks office.

In the past i believe you could avoid the sales/use tax issue by not getting the bike titled. And years ago i dont even know that many states gave titles for dirt bikes. I think most places currently though will make you get a title. But even now each state may be a little different.

In Canada I purchased my KTM out of province and the dealer did not charge the tax. I would have been spared but I wanted to insure my bike for fire and theft so I had to register it, thus paying tax in my home province.

A buddy of mine from Texas buys from Oklahoma sometimes when there’s a good deal. He has a relative in Oklahoma so he’s able to avoid tax by saying he’s in Oklahoma? That’s what I remember at least. Don’t know the legality of doing that and I don’t have family there so I wouldn’t ever do it. Tread lightly with tax fraud..

You can avoid taxes only if the dealer you're purchasing from doesn't charge it/report it. I'm going to assume you're purchasing from Altus. They cater to the people that insist on avoiding taxes and paying the absolute lowest price possible, so you should be good to go. You will have an MCO, but as soon as you try to title it here you're going to pay taxes.

I appreciate all the replies. I am not trying to do anything illegal. I just thought it was something common a lot of people do but havent bought a new bike in a while. If i can get a cheaper bike I am going to try and go that route. If it was illegal than I wouldn't do it. Just trying to save some bucks here.

Would suck not having a title if I did go to resell it though so something I am keeping in mind.

Thanks all for the replies so far!

I am pretty sure not paying sales taxes is illegal in all 50 states. But, if you return here and pay the taxes you are good to go.

Not if you live in a state without a sales tax but if you travel to one of those states to purchase something like a car or bike then yes, you should have to tax for your home state either at the time of purchase or when you go to register/title the bike as has been mentioned.

They'll give you a bill of sale and an MSO and send you on your way. You are responsible for tax and registration in your home state.

Har! Actually got that faux pas from a recent post, like this, and thought someone might pick up on it. Which you did, just indirectly. Kinda like moran/moron!
