Helmets protect skulls, not brains.
there is not much use left of a mint skull with scrambled brain, man

I made an edit at the top also. I had no idea this existed. I'll assume few people are aware of it.

This Kali helmet appears to have all of the new tech and more, and is not a one hit wonder!
Definitely needs more exposure, this looks like the future of helmets.

https://www.vitalmtb.com/product/guide/Full-Face-Helmets,52/Kali-Protec…

LDL - Low Density Layer
Kali's multi-G impact technology is called LDL. This proprietary impact management system is a low-density layer of viscoelastic cushions placed throughout the interior of the helmet. With the perfect durometer, LDL provides a soft yet resilient layer of protection next to your head as well as a great fit. LDL reduces rotational and oblique impact forces by more than 25%. LDL also significantly reduces low-G and high-G linear impacts.

I don’t get it. Is that not still eps in there that would be one big hit use? Looks to me like a bunch of buzz words for marketing...

Multi Impact. Resilient. Self healing foam.

It looks like what I mentioned earlier which is what got me on this subject, well also the 6D video, the type of foam in the trunks of cars to keep your jack and crowbar from rattling around.

From kali website:
“With further development, we believe Nano Fusion will make it possible to make a truly mutli-impact helmet that can be used and crashed again and again without any loss of performance or protection.”

It doesn’t sound like they’re there yet based off that statement. Hopefully soon though! That would be cool. Maybe some input on styling of the helmet too, I can’t see many buying it based off looks.

Here’s a link for you that mentions kali and several other brands. Still seems like it is just a different density of eps foam.

It is in their description now. I assume they refer to shell development, because a carbon fiber or weave shell will not withstand certain damage, some it will.

I'd take safety over styling myself, and since it is smaller I think most would prefer it. If we're talking colorways there are plenty of ways around that.

There is a point at which a helmet becomes negligible in it's ability to prevent brain injury.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbQCLPpUyEA&t=1m29s
Much TY Jeremy Obvious.

James had many many concussions, and all it takes is a small thump after that and you see black. Ask me how I know. At 3:15 after no crash and he pulls off, you see he's pulled his goggles and has his fingers on his eyes, (I'm sure his vision is compromised) and then he shakes his head, he knows he can't overcome that.

Motorcycle helmets are designed for high speed impacts, mostly negating the ability to perform for low and medium impacts. The ability to reuse them like a condom is directly related to that high speed design intent.

That's a really good link, with a few other within it, Thanks. It does appear partially dated, as they mention the 6D was new to them with little data, although other things seem updated.

I can only assume, as I haven't seen a Kali that this is what they are using:

"EPP Expanded PolyPropylene is very similar in appearance to EPS, with just a touch of rubbery feel on the surface by comparison and a little bit of give if you squeeze it with your thumb. EPP is a multi-impact foam, recovering its shape and most of its impact protection slowly after a crash."

Kali's website shows the progress year by year, and the newest shows self healing foam. I'm hoping someone chimes in that has or has seen one on this subject?

My son wore that helmet last year playing linebacker. He had his shit rung more than a few times where he forgot where he was for a bit. At what I would consider low speed impact. It is not all it’s cracked up to be. Good move in the right direction though. Glad to see advancements in head protection on all playing fields. 10 times better than when I was a kid.

In this video the owner states that they tested the helmet 16 times with no reduction in protection. You can see it is a different type of foam.

Motorcycle helmets do use (somewhat) flexible shells too...in the low end helmets. Poly shells (plastic) flexes. Ever try to pull on a cheap helmet that fits a bit snuck? You spread the chinstraps and they open up. As for your mention of only protecting against high speed impacts, this is the reason for the "revolutionary" helmet technologies such as Flex, ODS, Fluid Inside, and the Leatt Turbine system. It is not just to improve protection against single speed impacts, but protect against multiple speeds and directions of impacts. If you've ever had a Bell Flex helmet in your hand, you can physically feel the difference in densities between the 3 different layers. With the Low and Middle speed protective layers able ti withstand multiple impacts, they do not permanently deform. Only the high speed EPS layer deforms permanently upon impact.

The foam you are looking for is called Casidion. Strategic has a multi year exclusive on it. Strategic and Kali are partners of sorts thus giving Kali access. Strategic builds bicycle helmets and several moto helmets are built there as well...

I have a simple way of looking at things, call me stupid, or whatever you want...... it seems to work out. I work in electrical for a living, and I see far too often, people wanna just spend what it takes to get by. I get that we are all stretched tight in today's life, I truly get it....but this whole helmet thing, and my simple line of work kinda go hand in hand. Follow me on this if you care......

Many times, service work is the backbone of my living. Living in the midwest, storms are common, far more severe in the warmer months. Lightning can do some weird shit that cannot be explained at times, and we often shrug it off when we get lucky. I've been to homes where they lost a TV, and 11 breakers tripped in their panel. They care more about the damn TV than what the breakers prevented. Will they replace those little things that possibly saved their entire home? Fuck no! I often hear, we can do that later, we just gotta have that square to stare at every night.......it's more important. The panel in a home or shop, is the nerve center of the entire taco stand. Without it, things are gonna be an uphill battle from word go......

A helmet to me, is just like a breaker. It protects the entire nerve center of us! We don't always replace the things that protect us properly when they get one hell of a blast outta left field, but yet we always rely on them when the time comes. Did your new Bell, at 650 bucks, crack on your 30 mph cartwheel? Probably so...But that thing did its job, replace it now! Who cares if its a week old. Did those 50 dollar breakers just take a bolt of lightning, killing the oak tree in your front yard, and save your home and family? Yes, they did their job, replace them now. Who cares if they seem new to you.....

Replace your helmet regardless of what you think. One blast is enough....... If it costs too much at the time, don't ride until you can afford it. Don't fuck around with your own, or your loved ones, personal safety.

Let a 250lb fullback run head on into a 175lb cornerback and see what happens, it won't be a neutral event. But this is not about slide rules and engineers. This is about protecting your nugget. JS7 probably got a new Red Bull helmet every time he tipped over, but most of us will have multiple crashes in a season and use the same helmet for years.

Even todays obsolete technology could be improved with resilient liners rather than 1 and done. The type of memory styrofoam used to keep your jack from rattling in the trunk would be better than the stuff they use for helmets and styrofoam coolers.

If your 175lb cornerback is running at 28 mph and your 250lb fullback is running at 22mph then the momentum of the cornerback is P=MV or 80kg x 12.5m/s=1000 kg m/s. The momentum of the fullback would be 114kg x 10m/s=1140 kg m/s. Since they are heading directly at each other in opposite direction we will make the cornerbacks velocity a -.... Total momentum would therefore be 1140 kg m/s + -1000 kg m/s or 140 kg m/s. After impact their combined mass would be 194kg. Momentum is conserved therefore it would remain 140 kg m/s. 194kg x V= 140kg m/s 140/194= .72 so combined V=.72 m/s or 1.6 mph in the direction the fullback was headed.

That would mean the impact for the fullback would be the equal of a 20.4 mph impact and the impact for the cornerback would be the equal of a 29.4 mph impact against a solid immovable object. Not even close to your 56 mph reference. I'll give you a tip... Slide rules and engineers are the ones coming up with these new ideas in protection so you shouldn't knock the science...

7 likes for this post that is in greek. A lot of geeks on this site.

Everyone is hung up on the example I used. Forest for the trees. Helmets able to handle repetitive hits are a real thing and have been for 50 years. Perhaps Snell and DOT and dozens of other helmet standards around the world for the last same 50 years are flawed? They all assume a direct hit of a fixed pointed object at high speed, perhaps the least likely thing to ever happen in MX. How often do we crash head first into a spear?

Back to the example, the cornerback by your figures suffered aprox. 50% larger mph impact. So much for Myth Busters.
In the real world it is not a Prius going head on into a Prius, the other vehicle is usually a Semi.

If there were better commercially viable solutions for our helmets than EPS, then someone would use it. No different than when 6D came up with their revolutionary design, it spurred competition. You think Fox, Bell, 6D, etc wouldn't jump at the chance to catapult themselves to the top of the helmet world?

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.
Kali has invested over $20 million on their technology over 12 years, and no one has hardly heard of them. 6D did create change, but not much. There is much more to be done.

Not to be snarky but what is the point of your post?

Are you pushing the Kali technology?
Are you upset that other helmet manufacturers haven't caught up?
Are you calling out the helmet/ safety industry?

Not sure if you're upset that the Football technology isn't available, if the MX industry isn't moving fast enough for you, or if you just want to get the word out about new helmet technology.

Yes you would think so, but the fastest humans can run 28 mph. Put 2 head to head like on a kickoff and you have 56 mph, a speed virtually never attained in MX. MX is FULL of mild and moderate impacts. I'd venture to say football helmets are far more crack resistant now that they are using flexible shells.
Who is it that can run 28mph? Usain Bolt presently holds the world record for the 100m, and his record time is 9.58sec. This works out to 23.486430063mph. Pro football players aren't Usain Bolt

4.22 is the fastest 40m ever for a football player which is roughly 19.3mph. I just used his numbers to show that 2 objects moving towards each other does not double the impact forces like most people think. It doesn't even come close...

Brad Waldron has been at this for a long-time. I 1st worked with him on helmets for the TdF back in the late '90s...'98-'99, I think...when he was at Specialized. He's truly an innovator and he cares about the things that're being discussed in here. He's respected by his "competition".

Before all this "helmet stuff" Brad worked in the composite side of the aerospace industry.

He's pushing helmet design and materials/technology.

I truly appreciate that...

A lot.

Thanks, before yesterday I had no idea this existed. I kind of suspect there were more than a few industry insider's involved in this thread guiding me along.

My biggest point is increased safety. Better absorbtion and durability of headgear. Knowing what's happening in football, some of it with 6D's research, it just doesn't seem right that Moto should be left out of the safety race, and apparently with Kali they haven't been, we just didn't know about it.

Casidion:
http://www.casidion.com/

MULTI IMPACT

The viscoelastic properties of CASIDION guarantee optimum helmet performance even in prolonged rolling with up to 7 impacts per second.
ENERGY DISPERSION

The CASIDION energy driver system provides 40% impact reduction. Impact energy is absorbed and diverted away from the head.

THICKNESS REDUCTION

IMPROVED PROTECTION FROM REDUCED THICKNESS Helmets using CASIDION are lighter with reduced impact on the spine during normal use, at speed, and in falls.

I will just leave this here, since a few brands in this thread are being heralded as "breakthrough innovations", but the test results from a 3rd party/unbiased/ leading test lab show the contrary, for bike helmets:

Notice the TLD A1 Mips testing dramatically better than other brands mentioned here.

Right, because the same exact technology from leading bicycle helmets does not apply [facepalm].

2 of Kali Protectives helmets they promote for Moto are also considered bike helmets...and the concept is literally the same. Downhill Mountain Bike racing can result in the same, if not more traumatic head trauma as motocross can.
