The Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM) recently applied a new Racing Homologation Programme for helmets in MotoGP and World Superbike racing that will also be applied to all off road disciplines in the near future.

The new programme aims to improve rider head protection and helmet safety standards with more objective evaluation of their safety features.

FRHPhe test in a nutshell:
Linear impact test to determine the helmet’s response to both high and medium-low severity linear impacts and the level of protection against skull fracture.
Oblique Impact test aiming at evaluating the protection offered by the helmet against brain injuries generated by rotational accelerations.
Helmet penetration test to measure the helmet’s shell resistance to impact against sharp objects.

It's most likely overdue, but I can't help but feel they are just trying to stay relevant. I'm sure they'll profit from it somehow..

Finally atleast something. I really hope it’s more than just trying to stay relevant. The helmet testing and homologation has been a joke for way too long.

This has been in the works for a while. A few weeks back in MotoGP there was an issue with certain brands passing the test. Because Soumy and KYT didn't pass the test, Dovizioso, Petrucci, and Espargaro had to use helmets from competitor companies that were rebranded to look like their usual lids.

Should take some time for it to trickle over to off-road, but it's a much-needed thing. Expect a "MIPS" option from more companies in the next few years.

Funny thing, first time I heard they were starting to plan this thing maybe 2 years ago, they had a meeting somewhere (at a MotoGP race possibly if I remember correctly) with the obvious major helmet brands involved attending. But someone was missing Whistling

Airoh isn't a major street brand with their products focused on off-road. Nonetheless, they were actually one of the initial brands to pass the new homologation. While SUOMY, arguably one of the top 5 brands with Shoei, Arai, Shark and HJC failed to pass their new helmet and Dovizioso had to wear a rebranded Shoei...just saying...Whistling

Interesting that the size of the helmet can be the difference in whether the same helmet passes or not. Obviously that makes sense because of the different amount of materials used but it's something I never thought about.

Why do I have a feeling that the brands who do not pony up some advertising dollars to Youthstream will not get their helmets approved?
