In the coming months I'm looking to buy a late model 1/2 ton 4wd, nothing brand new probably 2015-2018. I'm eyeing a couple models and thought you guys could provide some feedback. I won't be doing any heavy towing, probably under 3000lbs. In a quick google search I couldn't find a generic truck forum to ask my questions, I know better than to join a ford forum and ask about chevy and vise versa. I hope to keep this truck 5+ years so durability is very important.

I'm interested in the Silverado 1500, F150, and Tundra. A family friend has a '16 GMC with the 5.3 and I've driven it twice but that engine doesn't feel like a power house at all, to me it feels weak. I like the new chevy styling but that 5.3 just leaves me wanting more. They do make a 6.2 but only in the higher trim packages (leather). I've driven a '15 3.5 ecoboost and I really enjoyed it but twin turbo's and all that stuff makes me question long term durability and what it would cost to replace that stuff if something broke. I did own a 2010 Tundra for about a year in the past and I liked that motor but its very thirsty and the truck in general is huge for a 1/2 ton. I've done some research on the 5.0 ford and see they have some ticking issues and cold start issues. I realize no truck is perfect, just hoping to find one on the lower end of the "could have problems" scale. I'll be putting a pretty substantial down payment on whatever I buy so I'm hoping to make the best decision possible. I appreciate any and all input thank you.

The fords are ok, when I was truck shopping it seemed that for the same price you get a lot more options in a ram or Chevy.
If I was to buy a Chevy I would go with the lt ( lt 1 package) and the z71 off road that trucks looks so good! The 5.3 is a solid motor and it can get some cheep tunes as well. A really good option
Then again I chose a 18 ram the 5.7 is a good motor proven reliable and halls ass. The ram has the best stock warranty as well so keep that in mind. And I seemed that I had way more options in a ram then in a ford, or Chevy. You can find a nice ram 1500 Laramie longhorn 5.7 low miles with air suspension for 34ish, while the Chevy in a high trim is like 38.
Also Nissan Titans have suprised me we bought a few for work trucks and there seem pretty good so far and a bumper to bumper warranty for 5 years or 100k can’t beat that
You can still find some huge discounted 18s for Chevy and ram.

I would stay away from the ford, the 3.5 seems too complicated and the trucks are too pricey
Stick with a 16-18 chevy 1lt z71 and you’ll be happy
Or look at a ram Laramie, Laramie long horn or even a big horn.
I’d stick with Chevy or ram

I can’t speak for the tundra but their styling looks bad and they look like a fucking tank driving down the road, like a 2500 but worse fuel economy and less towing

Thanks for your input, I am a little gun shy on the hemi. My dad had a 2011 have some valve train issues that took out his cam. After some research he found out that around 125k miles that model hemi was known to do that. He replaced the rockers and cam himself and I saw the roller tips on the rockers and they looked like you'd hit them with a grinder. IDK if that hemi and say an '18 hemi is the same or if they updated something? I do like the simplicity of the 5.3 motor I will admit that. The new chevy body styles do look amazing.

The 5.7 got updated in 2014 for the cams etc, it’s a super strong motor.
We have a 08 in the fleet and it’s got 200k pulling a trailer with 5k every mile and it’s now wearing through the jackets
5.3 is a really simple motor and you can tune it to hell
That 16-18 body is super clean with the body color match on the bumper with the z71
The rams are clean to it’s just preference I think the ram has more towing and payload.
Go drive both and see what you think

I shopped all the trucks. The Ford was priced too high without providing value to me, Chevy/GMC felt cheap on the inside and the steering mount shifter seemed so outdated. Love the Tundra but it hasn't been updated since 2007. The Ram I liked the most. I bought a 2018 Rebel and really like it. All that being said it's all personal opinion. My son just got a GMC, it's nice but the seating position is odd and the engine is bland. Keep in mind the Rebel has 3.92 gearing.

I shopped them all in 2016 and I agree with a lot of what your say. I thought the Ford was was overpriced since the aluminum body makeover, and my 2009 F-150 that I was replacing was a piece of crap. The Tundra was long in the tooth. I wasn't crazy about the Dodge styling at the time.

It came down to the Chevy and GMC, and I ended up with the Sierra because the option package I got was a little better for the same price. Overall, I do like the the truck, but I don't really love it. I think the exterior and interior styling look good, and the Z71 package is nice. I know what people mean when they say the 5.3 doesn't feel as strong as you would expect for the rated power. I think a lot of that is from being such a heavy truck, bigger tires, and mostly the rear end gear that you get. However, I usually get 22-23 mpg combined, if I am not hauling anything. My Ford always got 15.8.

GM. Excellent fuel economy, reliable, well designed. The 5.3 isn’t a powerhouse but it’s a really good engine, I’d take it over the Hemi or the Ford 5.0. I wouldn’t want an ecoboost either.
Get a 16+, the 14-15’s had awful headlights.
The 6.2 is great if you can get it.

I’ve had a 14 Sierra Denali with the 6.2/6spd, loved that truck except the awful headlights.
17 Silverado LTZ Z71 with 6.2/8spd, great truck but didn’t care for the 8spd.
18 Sierra Elevation with 5.3/6spd, good workhorse but the 6.2 was actually better on fuel
Got a 19 Silverado High Country now with the 6.2/10spd and I’m 100% satisfied. First 400 mile trip with it which included 40 miles of very rough dirt roads I got an honest to god 22mpg.
I’ve driven the newer Fords and Rams, I’m not a GM loyalist I just think they make a better truck. I really tried to like the Ram, tested a 17 1500 Limited for two days and was offered a smoking deal on it but ended up with the Silverado instead, the Ram was nice just felt gimmicky.

Is it true the 6.2 requires 93octane fuel? I read that somewhere but can't find it now.

One thing about the Chevy/ gmc is they have a REAL METAL KEY and a real SHIFTER.
Vote here for a lt z71 5.3 or a ram Laramie 4x4 5.7

It requires 91. It’s worth it. My 5.3 ran on 87 but the 6.2 has yielded me 10% better fuel economy so it offsets the higher gas price. You can run the 6.2 on 87 but it’s not recommended.

Agree about the GM 5.3 and lack of power. I was in the market for a new truck in 2016 and it came down to the F150 or silverado. The 5.0 in the F150 just felt so much more powerful in my test drives and was a big reason for choosing the F150. The GM 6.2 is nice but I really did not have money in the budget for that upgrade. Ford also has the 2.7 or 3.5 ecoboost both of which are very powerful and fast. I choose the V8 because I plan to keep my truck for a long time and wasn't sure about the reliability of a small displacement turbo V6 (although I hear reliability is good).

I have an '18 Chevy LT Z71 and the only thing I hate about it is the rear end design. Mine makes lots of clunky noise, but you could get one that's good too. GM allows too much "tolerance" in the axles where they insert into the rear diff and accept a circlip. This "tolerance" is the gap between the clip and the diff housing which moves back and forth and makes the clunk noises. My dealer said 50/50 on if they make noise... and also GM knows about it but won't do anything to fix it.

I've owned an F150 too, both motors. They fly compared to the 5.3L Chevy. Mileage is way better on the Chevy though.

Yes I hate push button start and I hate any shifter other than a. Column shifter. Although I am warming up to the dial in our rams

I know 2 people with f150 with the 3.5l both have had no issues. One has 150k with just normal maintenance. We have a lot of 2.7 with zero issues at my work, and there work trucks so they get driven very hard...

The age old question that will yield 1,000 different opinions! lol. For what its worth, we bought a 2016 F-150 end of last year and couldn't be happier. I went with the 5.0, which has proved to be plenty of power for anything we have needed it for. I towed a 24ft enclosed trailer last weekend when we moved and it did a great job. It does have a 6 inch lift with 35's so gas mileage is not great, but actually better than our last f-150 that had the 5.4 triton. Usually average 13.5-14 in town and 17-18 on freeway. Bed is a bit small, but i load my bike sideways anyway so i can still close tailgate. Back seat it HUGE compared to others we looked at. Just my 2 cents..... Good luck!

I bought this about 2.5 years ago and have no big complaints. The 5.3 is fine for me. Gas mileage is pretty good(18 average). It rides and drives very good. I’ve driven a large mix of trucks between my jobs and honestly think they’re all pretty good. I bought this for the looks. Next truck would probably be the new 19+ Rams or a 2500 in any brand. Only complaint with this generation gm is no air vents for the back seats.

If you’re going to be towing under 3000 lbs ever consider a Tacoma?

Reliable, good fuel economy, better resale than anything else.

Plus they still offer a manual transmission Cool

I like Tacoma's I've owned several but for the price I'd pay for one I could get a full size truck with way more room inside and out. Plus I don't like the styling of the new Tacoma nor the fact they dropped the engine size in the v6 and lost torque.

After more research I've surprisingly settled (I think lol) to RAM. I'm looking at the 3.0 eco diesel and the hemi. Like mentioned above I can get a Laramie longhorn (used late model) for what dealers ask for a F150 XLT w/ FX4 pkg. I really wanted to like the chevy but I know I don't like how the 5.3 runs I've drivin a '16 model twice so I think I'd just be disappointed over time with it.

I too would stay away from the GM, I've put over 250k miles on 2014 and newer models and they all seem to have their issues after the mileage starts to rise. My last one (2017) lost the transmission at 56k miles.

I have done lots of research on the eco diesel now as I own one. If you get an eco diesel get a 17 or 18. Then immediately get a GED tune, you will love this truck and the fuel economy! The eco is a little sluggish compared to the hemi but is to be expected with a diesel.
The hemi is a awesome fast and powerful.
What I want is a ram interior and a 16 Chevy exterior that would look sweet!
And the Laramie longhorn package is super sweet as well! Let us know what you pick up

With a remodeling business I go through a lot of trucks. I will say my favorite was a 2013 Ram Laramie. It was a much better truck than our current 2018 Chevy LTZ. The 5 year newer truck needs a friggin key to start it! I’m too old to screw with keys 😂

I loved the Ram engine and being old I like the bells n whistles that the Ram gave me. The air suspension ride was much better than the 5 yr newer Chevy.

I know many people swear by Tacoma’s so I tried one. I’m sorry but it felt like a mini truck compared to the full size models. Maybe the Tundra is better but the Tacoma turned me off of Toyotas.

I’ve had several f150’s over the years and was very happy with their reliability. Not fond of the newer ones with the ignition cut off when you come to a stop, but they are still great trucks

Have you had any issues with the emissions stuff? I have two riding buddies that have the eco diesel IDK what year models. I think one is like a '14 maybe and the other a '17. The one with the older model is right around 100k and had to have his turbo and intercooler replaced, luckily under warranty. Also is the eco model the only one that comes with the air ride suspension?

After more research I've surprisingly settled (I think lol) to RAM. I'm looking at the 3.0 eco diesel and the hemi. Like mentioned above I can get a Laramie longhorn (used late model) for what dealers ask for a F150 XLT w/ FX4 pkg. I really wanted to like the chevy but I know I don't like how the 5.3 runs I've drivin a '16 model twice so I think I'd just be disappointed over time with it.

I am all set on the emissions stuff, the GED tune shuts of the egr cooler and you can get a egr delete kit for 75 bucks then a full emissions delete so you use no def or have any emmmisons is like 1k so with the GED and the full delete your like 2k above the price you bought it at.
I spoke to a ram rep who said delete the whole thing get the tune and it will run for thousands of miles!
Some guys have 500+ fully deleted. It’s just like any other modern diesel the epa has killed the motor and fucked it up for emissions.
And on the air ride that is an option with any motor package in the rebel, Laramie long horn, and limited.
I say go for the Laramie long horn hemi or diesel air ride with the saddle brown/ back interior

My $.02

I'd stay away from the upper level Rams with air suspension if long term durability is your goal. Zero chance that crap holds up over time and it would seem to be a pretty costly out-of-warranty repair. Same with the active grill shutters and the other gimmicks that FCA puts on those trucks. Otherwise, I think the 5.7 Hemi is one of the best motors you can get in a half ton.

Two of my buddies have '16 F150s, one with the 3.5 ecoboost and one with the 5.0. The turbo v6 is the better truck motor. Makes gobs of torque at low rpm and was designed from the get-go for truck applications. The 5.0 was originally designed for the Mustang; its a high revving, relatively small displacement v8. It's a solid reliable motor, but for towing and hauling the 3.5 is the better engine.

I have no experience with the modern GMs but I've always heard good things about the reliability of the LS motors.

The Tundra is outdated and overpriced in my opinion.
