What's the proper way? I've heard theories to support both methods. Any professionals or those who know care to advise?

you should measure it on the stand. Take it off, and in full gear give it a few bounces, then sit in a neutral position.

We have gotten better feedback from customers using the stand up method. If you want to get real precise take your initial measurement on the stand. Take the bike off the stand, have the rider stand with knees not touching the bike and on balls of their feet and measure. Then push the rear down 2 or 3 times and after it settles take the measurement again. Average the two for the most accurate sag setting.

Get it rough anyhow you want. THEN test it on the track for feel and adjust it up or down. The number isn’t magic! Also warmed shock and bearings will change your static numbers.
Kris Keefer makes me laugh with his 107.55mm stuff.
