Have your dealer reach out to a Yamaha District Manager. I don’t see why they wouldn’t at least cover a portion of this as long as there isn’t something else going on here that you’re not telling us.
$4K trade in = $2K difference on Honda + tax on the $2K (~$300). Complete total $6300 of Honda.

I know what I would do. Take the trade and your hands are wiped clean of it and leave it as the dealers problem. Sell it privately and you may have a very pissed off person coming after you.
I doubt he’s going to pay off his loan for the Yamaha because I’m sure it’d be over $5,000 and then he’s financing another $6,000+ I’d just buy a motor at that point.
Just trying to say it’s not like you’re spending $1,000 more if it’s $5,000 because you’d still be paying for the Yamaha. And $4,999 for a 17 Honda 250 is a smoking deal.
Labor to fully rebuild a 4 stroke at the shop I worked at was 425...
