My testing a 97 CR500 and telling is like listening to a retard talking about evolution, but despite my lack of skills and rudimentary testosterone production I say that bike is crazy for 99%. I went from my CRF250 to this freak and I honestly didn't know this bike was that potent. On top of this, this mother was ported, and unfortunately only had power in upper midrange resembling of the ketchup-effect which made it extra crazy, added to that you had tons of vibrations which I have forgotten even existed on dirtbikes.

I'm pretty impressed by those going full with these, and I'm also interested to understand how its possible to do that AND get some traction?

Cudos to you, or seek help? Wink

I rode my first about 2 weeks ago. 1987 cr500, i wasnt that impressed actually, while it was fast as balls it just seemed like a hopped up 250, i raced the kid down my road on my crf450 and beat him, pulled him in every gear. now if this thing was running right i have no clue but for the vibration the thing created i see no use for them, however i do want to ride a newer model, preferably a 500af them things look wicked!

I'll get back to you this weekend on your question/statement. But... it will be that motor in an 06 CRF250 frameset.

A big difference, I'm betting.

A hopped up 250 from 2000 will probably have similar power or feeling? Still I guess it's impossible to get that impressive torque thought. Cubic inches rules and A 500 beats all including the 450s in that department.

Despite this encounter I wish to own a 500AF, but no way in hell I see it as and advantage for a majority (except for the looks, cool-factor, maintenance and sound which are very important things!).

Your probably better to work your way up 250cc then 500cc. I owned a 500 2 stroke, at first its a little scary but you get use to the power and ride it mostly in the torque curve of the powerband. Then you can really go fast!

My last 500 was an 89 KX 500 which I bought new. Raced it twice seperated my shoulder and sold it. It would put my hands to sleep. That's cool you got to sample the beast.

Gear it up to take the hit out of it and you'll get more of a 450, tractor kind of power. 14/48 works nice. If any 500 you've ridden feels like a hopped up 250 it's way past time for a new piston and rings. Welcome to the club.

thats what i was thinking, when i was on it i kept thinking whens this hit and raw power ive been hearing about coming? I would never ride that bike on a track how ever due to the geometry of the frame it feels like your riding a harley/mx bike the thing felt like it would handle like ass, so i opted for some runs down the road, then i lined up my 450 and beat him out of the hole and top end? which really confused me, the 500 sounded normal and seemed to be running fine though

I remember my first cr500 experience - I was 15....and could only manage one lap before I couldn't feel my hands!

MXA did a comparison between the 07 or was it the 08 CRF450 and they said that the CRFt didn't stand a chance power or torque wise.

Not saying you are wrong, but maybe that 87 was a turd with damaged nicasil and a piston from stone age? Maybe something happened after 1990 with the CR500?

the 86 to 88 CR500's ,if anything, are faster than the 89-01's..
honda constantly detuned the engine

but if it feels like a 250,or couldnt hang with a 450'.
, it needed top end or reeds..
or
clutch.

doc,, i'm scrawny 145 pounds on a rainy day..
and can hang onto them decently . even those old steel frames

Cool, I didn't know the 86-88 was more powerful! If I get the chance I will avoid those years then!

I'm looking forward towards a CR250AF with the 01-engine. What is it? 4 people on earth that can torture than bastard to it limits? Smile

Doc- you mean this bike?
2009 CR 250AF

if so, you'll see a test on it soon in Dirt Rider Magazine
(and on the CR 250AFX and KX250AF)

The 85' and 86' "hit" harder than the 87' and 88' which in turn hit harder than the later ones. I don't know if they're really any "faster". When people ride my 87' they say it feels like a chopper but I have no problems cutting underneath a CRF450. Probably just means a 450 don't turn worth a crap either.

The last race I ran on my 87' I won and pulled 450s hard. It had a cracked piston. They'll run till something let's loose. I mean seriously, how would you know if it's putting out 58HP or 54HP? They still pull like a tractor worn out.

AJ - have you ever experimented with some sort of rubber or carbon fiber? mounting system to reduce or improve on what vibration the 500 AFs currently have?

Also which issues of mags are going to have your bikes? I looked at the current MXA ( April I believe ) and didn't see any mention of it?

BTW - I had my '89 CR500 cylinder done by Pro Circuit and it took some of the hit out and gave me a much longer, broader power band. You could actually rev the thing out and it didn't feel like it was going to explode or vibrate apart.

I owned a new '87 CR500 for 13 days before it was stolen. The one time I was able to race it, no other 500's showed up so they lined me up with the 250 experts. They weren't your run of the mill experts either. On the line were National numbers 24 Hawthorne, 38 Hoenshell, 73 Tinney, as well as a couple of other future double digit guys and the usual suspects. The first moto I pulled a six bike holeshot and led a lap before my arms completely seized and I rode over the finish line, straight to the truck. I was kind of glad that bike got stolen.
