Anodizing Hubs

Hi Guys,

Getting my '17 CRF 450 in a few days and I would like to anodize the rims black.

Asked the local guy if he can do the hubs as well, he advised that the hubs are cast aluminum . And doesn't recommend doing it. Is that true ?

Don't want to do powder coating on the hub as I was told never to powder coat a fast moving object as it can chip away.

When you anodize cast it looks flat in color. You can have them machined prior to anodizing. Powdercoat on hubs wirks perfectly fine, have seen it done many times.

Powdercoat or Cerakote usually best for hubs. Cerakoting gives you a plethora of colors and textures, and has been more durable in my experience...A few photos of bronze cerakote can be seen here:

i Do customized stock wheel sets for customers all the time. I machine down stock hubs and powder coat them, anodize the stock rims. You can anodize a stock hub but the only color that would come out half decent is black.

Wow that really looks amazing bud. Will for sure powder coat the hubs.

My only worry was that the color will come out flat and lacking that shine/polished look.

But yours looks absolutely awesome

Heres a bunch of pics of all the stuff I anodised on on my RM125. I pretty much anodised everything that was aluminium on my bike except the swingarm and cylinder 98% of which was cast, it doesn't come up shiny like billet machined stuff does due to cast aluminium being porous so the treatment sort of soaks into it more rather than sticking to the top layer and tinting the shiny aluminium. I dont have nice closeups of the bike once it was finished on this computer but once you have washed it once or twice with a pressure washer that brown tinge to the finish is gone and leaves a nice flat black which turns into satin black with a light coat of WD40, you can sort of see what I mean in the last picture. The crappy half closeups of the wheels are straight after I finished building them, OEM hubs turned down on a lathe and finished in a sand blasting cabinet with the finest crushed glass you can get to give the cast look back to the surface, the wheel spacers are cheap aftermarket units that were gold but were redone in blue, They came up nice.

Black isnt the only colour that looks good on Cast aluminium, typically your base colours will look pretty drab like your reds, blues, greens and oranges. But it depends on what colours your vendor can do and how experienced they are at getting the colour you want. I've seen awesome results done in gold, olive green. Browns can be made to look like factory cast magnesium.

Anodizing cast alum looks bad. You need to have a smooth surface finish to get the shiny look to them.

Did your hubs have the big ridges? Did that mess with the strength of the hubs?
