Ive done all that too, really just not interested in being involved in the club scene anymore.
The club thing is an inefficient buisness model , which is why most clubs struggle.
Racing needs to be run by private entrepenuers that run races for profit, therefore they would have to provide their customers ( the racers ) with a value for money experience.
Any involvement with MA rules that out completely as being a viable proposition.
The sport needs only a small level of administration, so a small privately run buisness could be set up to do that.

Clubs should look at leasing their tracks to private operators....think about it...
The ride park operators are doing well and more and more people are buying new bikes or dusting off old ones to go ride these great new tracks..
The vast majority of these people want nothing to do with clubs or MA....that says it all

Clubs run where business can not make it viable to run,

i think MX would be even more expensive if a business ran it,

look at WEM running the aussie nationals, no one is claiming its more efficient and cheaper for the riders,

I really dont think youve considered my post properly.
Kevin Williams is the Giuseppe Luongo of Australian MX he loves the $$$ and he milks the riders for every penny, He does everything through MA and MA guarantees that he will never see a rival trying to run big championship races.
He has to fork out $$$$to pay for flights , meals and accomodation for the MA officials that oversee national title events$$$$$ plus all the other MA bulshit and $$$$$ expense that goes along with it...If he wasnt hooked to MA his overheads would be considerably less.

Clubs often own their property or lease it...they could in turn lease it to a private operator whos job it would be to have that track prepped and ready for every saturday and sunday and maybe a day through the week...the club riders would be the foundation of his customer base.....many more new customers would come along.
The club could still use the track to do club things but would have to leave MA behind.
It would be in the best interest of the club to help the private operator with maintenance and promotion.

The idea could work well...think about it all before shooting me down....
The private track operators are making a good living from charging adults $45 to $55 per day. They get that nearly every saturday and sunday. Most clubs run a practise day about 8 to 10 times a year, thats usually a real hard push with volunteer labour, the rest of the time the track is locked up,and once MA takes their chunk out of the dollars , theres usually bugger all left after a practise day

MA are a glorified insurance broker....a very expensive insurance broker with no competition...
All their bullshit rules and regulations are just there way of trying to justify their own existence.
They run huge races at places in the USA with no wankers like MA involved...the world vet championship and the world two stroke championship are 2 that spring to mind..
How well do you reckon that would go if MA had any involvement with it?

Think it all through carefully before replying
WEM is a business. While Giuseppe Williams may have raised the professionalism of the sport in Australia, he's all but wiped out the privateer involvement. His attitude to privateers (gate fillers or "losers" as he put it to me years ago) and his personal elitism has fucked it. Really hope he's sinking back all the money he bled out of the nationals trying to keep it afloat and goes belly up.
And what has been said about the cost of basic involvement, I too went to take my boy out to the track when I got his first PW and along with me on my bike after so many years away. It was going to cost a small fortune similar to a week on the Goldie to do a one day, casual license for the two of us to see if he liked it. Add in the insulting "demonstrate I can ride in a circle and apply brakes because I hadn't held a license in X years" bullshit, and that was end of racing for this family. We instead do BMX like a lot of other guys I know from racing around the country for so many years in the 80's and 90's. Fuck you WEM. Fuck you MA
NOTE: I've still got a club day entry fee receipt from back on 80's and it was $15 which would have been 5 moto's. I used to push trolley's and pack shopping bags after school to afford my own racing cause my mother hated it and the other half there's no need to go into that. Try doing that now.

Scott do you still run events?
no, not at the moment, but I have just gone onto the board of MNZ and do some other stuff in the sport, trying to get flat track racing going in NZ,

When we rode up there a few years back it also had something to do with paying to run a national an little help from the promoter

I’d like to know how you think WEM has raised the professionalism of the sport in Australia? I would say the likes of Craig Dack, Troy Carrol, Yarrive Konskey and Jay Foreman were the guys that raised the bar of professionalism of MX in Australia with the way they ran the teams and Have a look at the guys from AME that are running the Aus-X open and Scott Bannan with Jimboomba SX if you want to see guys trying their hardest to help the sport rise to a new level as well as professionalism.

Sounds like you guys need some good ole American anti government freedom to ride type operation.
Jeff you'd be appalled at the level of Govt interference here. Worse than California. always been the way here... Convict nation at the beginning convict nation now.

Non profit, ha.
The way to keep anything non profit is just pay the top guys big salaries and bonuses with what’s left over after expenses,
You don’t get that, you’re just another babe in the woods.

Heck, here in the USA the head of the AMA pulls around $250,000 a year, all the while claiming they are almost brokeLaughing

About the clubs here in the USA.There are plenty.
Dist 7 I think is motorcycling unlimited.
I know Southern Md, Dirt Riders ran a lot of races at Budds.
Here in the States, clubs help with personnel at their events, and sometimes with others also.

But, you don’t have to be a club, anyone here can rent a track, put an ad in the paper, and run an event.
It just won’t be AMA.

I say that from how things were in the mid 90's when he started running the show. Not saying he's done the best job in the world by any standard, but it has been lifted from that period after Vince packed up Mister Motocross. Still can't pull the crowd's that the Mister Motocross series did though.

You know MA's predecessor the ACU ( auto cycle union ) were complete fuckwits too...Whole thing was modeled on the British ACU...as if anything organized by the pommies should be anything to aspire to!!!
These were the fuckwits that set up this whole club based system and purposely set out to shut out private promoters and black events.
I'll never forget these arseholes cancelling Jeff Leisk"s race license for riding a Diamond Vally club pony express ( black event ) he showed up for the Mildura supercross and they wouldn't let him race...just before he went to Europe.
Next thing he"s winning GP' s and the ACU are crowing about this great Australian talent...wankers!.

Random thoughts on whats wrong.

1. Having to join a club to get a license...just another process you have to go through and money you have to spend.
You have to produce your club membership card with your license when asked to at sign up on race day.
Trouble is, clubs are volunteer based, you join the club and they say they'll send you the member card....lucky if you ever actually get one...
All up just a requirement set up by the ACU to subsidize clubs by forcing people to pay to be a member of one if they wanna race a moyorcycle....thats all it is.

2. Applying for a race number....not that big of a deal but just another hassle for a potential newcomer. What does it matter what number you run when scoring is done via transponder?

3. back numbers, the pricks are religious about this, no back number...not even allowed to ride!! Why the fuck does it even mater?

4 . Bring your own flag marshall or no ride...this one was massive when introduced..by my estimate...70% of all independent adult senior riders in Victorian motocross were gone from the sport before the e nd of the first year of this shit.

5. $10 flag levy per class. When it finally dawned on the fuckwits that a large percentage of adults dont have someone to flag for them, forcing them to not race anymore, they introduced the $10 flag levy, forcing up the cost..they all charge it, and Ive personally witnessed a club take the money and use unpaid volunteers as flaggies anyway..Im sure it goes on with a lot of clubs.

6. Juniors and seniors racing on the same track on the same day...dumbest idea ever...too many classes and fuck all track time for anyone...stupid stupid stupi!!

7. Only one open meeting allowed to run on any given weekend in any state.....stupid stupid stupid!!!!
All Australian states are huge...and many states have regional hubs of mx popularity..
Theres plenty of riders ( at least there used to be ) to have an open meeting down in the Gippsland area of victoria the same weekend as one up in the Mildura area, one down in the Colac area and one in the Albury area...Any idea just how far apart these places are from each other?????
If you live up near Albury ,you need to be pretty dedicated to drive down to Colac or Sale For a race..if you live over near Mildura..your just not gonna go!
Yet this has always been the rule...but in recent years , theyve run these regional series in 3 separate regions, north, gippsland and western...all 3 regions run their races on the same weekend....finaly a good idea! But they waited till there were virtually no opens anymore ,before doing this...but then they went and made the regions 2 day events with seniors and juniors on the same track on the same day! Jesus wept! You just cant tell these fuckwits anything..they have cloth ears!

I will think of more things in due course..

I agree with pretty much everything that has been said here. I don't race anymore and neither do my three kids, actually my kids don't even ride anymore and it all boiled down to money. I live within an hour and a half of 4 ride parks here in Victoria that all have better prepared tracks than most clubs, I have no problem paying $50 to ride as much as I want every weekend. I won't ever have an MA license again. MA's greed basically pushed my family out of a sport that we loved doing for 13 years. So instead of making some money from me , now they make nothing.

Holy shit PJR reading your posts it was like I traveled back in time to the 90's.

The 3 lap races.
The hours and hours of standing around waiting. Most events back when I raced would even stop the program an hour for lunch (wtf?).

I did it MA's way for 6 years and made "A" grade (lmao) and then quit and went trail riding and did pony express. I reckon my riding skills improved dramatically in the first twelve months trail riding than 6 years of Aussie MX because I was riding ten times more than the track time I got "racing"...and I was an A class rider lol.

That, the cost and the "parents" who ran the local tracks with the parent cliques was just pure bullshit.
I remember my '96 KX250 used to foul plugs like a mofo and my bike fouled a plug on the line. I borrowed a mates CR and rode the race, won the fucking thing and the mothers club disqualified me because it wasnt my bike and didnt have my numbers yay good on them!!!!
This was a freaking non event club day and there were 5 other bikes in the race ffs and we raced for pies and pasties not sheep stations.

That all basically sums up Aussie MX so if that shit has continued I'm not surprised it hasnt evolved past the shit show it always was.

PJ is spot on with everything I come to this thread to see his posts and other and everyone has hit the nail on the head.

Here is my personal 3 grievances and it's the same for a lot of people.

1. Divi 1 they wont drop the gates I'm happy with no timing or trophies for everyone (I actually hate trophies for everyone but hey welcome to 2018) not dropping the gate and setting them off 1 by one is starving kids of a crucial skill and it is dangerous as hell, my kid is running into PW50's on the first lap I have seen multiple kids landed on when the fast kids catch them in the first lap.
No matter what you think yes its non competitive but these kids are here to race!!

2. Divi 2, can modify anything from stock so instead of buying cheaper superior aftermarket parts when you destroy parts as kids do you have to for it for OEM, OEM radiators retail for $380 each and I'm lucky to get 20hrs out of a set aftermarket ones are $200 for a set I have 50hrs on the set on my divi 1 bike.

3. Not being able to ride a 250 2 stroke in 2 classes, we need bang for buck and I'm not talking about riding it in the pro class I just want to be able to ride it in both support classes but no in our series I can only ride it in the MX2 support not open which makes no sense, mlm or or less means it's not an open class at all i actually got moved out of the open class when they realised mid season, open class is 251cc and up 2 stroke.

I could go on and on and on, every riders brief the officials are fair into everyone because maybe one person came up to machinery check in thongs or something...its always something...the the flagging and the snr's and jnr's on the same day and our series is run over 2 days but 2 rounds on both days...

I'm so over MA I'll renew my licence when u go to do finke fuck em.

Dam you like to whinge a lot PJR.

Ever actually looked around at any of your local clubs to realise who it is that actually keeps this sport running at a race level at any level what so ever?

Yep its the parents of those nappy wearers you go on about, the parents are the ones, finding funding for the clubs, volunteering their time to organise races as race secutaries, clerks of course, stewards running the canteen and so on.

The same people that sit there and work all race day while their kids fend for themselves trying to race, while mum and dad make sure the race day continues.

They are the ones that spend countless hours working in their own time before and after work so race days happen at all in this country.

If it was left up to senior riders like yourself and Yes including myself, race days would not happen at all.

Tell me how you think a race day would run if it was left to non junior parents to run them, seriously who do you think is going to magically run these events for you if eveyone had the same attitude for you.

You think it is hard trying to find someone to flag for yourself, tell me how its any easier for a parent there with their kid who had to go out and flag while their kid is left in the pits? Maybe you should realise that a parent also has to try and find someone else to come along to do a flag shift so they can stay with their kid on the start line and in the pits.

Maybe get yourself involved with a club and get things changed up,

I spent two days racing with my son on the weekend just gone, we raced Saturday at a no MA affiliated club in SA, race day started at 12 noon, Jay raced two classes, I didn't race as it was his first on the 65. (He is just out of nappies!)

Only 6 classes for the day, 50,65, 85, junior 125/250, Senior under 30, Senior over 30. If I had raced we would have raced in 50% of the classes between us, 3 laps practice then 3x4 lap races, packed up and out the gate by 4.15pm.

Sunday we went to local MA affiliated club, ran mainly by those parents you so detest. 7 Classes of racing and two senior feature races.

50, 65, 85, junior 125/250, Vets / Women combines , MX2 All grades (scored seperately) MX1 all grades. Feature races were 1 x 5 lap all powers race and 1 x 5 lap two stroke cup ( Track about 2min 10 sec long for a top A grader)

ABout $60 to enter 1st class extra $10 for for any additional classes or feature races.

Again my son raced 50 and 65 class, I raced Vets and MX1. Junior races were all 4 laps, so he had 6 four lap races for the day, I had 6 x 5 lap races for the day, about 12-13 minutes of riding per race x 6 races, so plenty of track time.

Even with a 30 minute ambo hold up we were done by 3.45pm!

The club allows senior riders who can't get a flaggy to flag practice (First in best dressed for the 13 flag points) They then allow those riders their own 4 lap practice before the first race.

Maybe move over to South Aus, or find a local track and get involved.

I do agree there are way to many people that want to run to many classes, the old my poor kid can't keep up with the front runners so lets create another grade and run them seperately, to that I say piss off. Unless all 40 gates are full, there is no need to run different grades seperately, score them seperately but let them all race at the same time.

Yeah I don't agree with the babysitting thing, without jnr parents the clubs would be dead, well in the CQ anyway, that's why they wont run the snr's and jnr's on different days, they wouldn't have enough flaggers for the snr riders day.

And I dont know why they dont just have a flaggers levy I'd rather pay that then flag then run it on separate days..

The biggest prob with just charging riders more for flaggers is due to the fact it is hard to find people who will even flag if paid.

We have a group in South Aus who do it at our state titles, CRABS, they are a charity bikie group that raise money for Cancer research, generally pretty good.

One club decided not to use them and pay used back packers!

On the above mentioned MA-affiliated clubday above, the club for the past two club days have organised a group to cover off five flag points for the three rounds of racing, and then still struggled to get enough riders to supply flaggies.

with myself and my son racing, I put my hand up and help with bike scrutineering in the morning, instead of a flag shift, just means we get there a little earlier and didn't get the bikes out of the ute and trailer until practice was about to start, but at least we could still both race.

We dont have a choice when we nominate through reidernet we have to put someone down to flag, if you are rostered on and dont supply the flagger you dont ride.

It would be great if the host state gets top ten state champs in each class free entry to ride the event.
The families will follow to watch and support the entrant increasing gate takings for the host clubs and build crowd numbers.

PJRAUS:......#"4 . Bring your own flag marshall or no ride...this one was massive when introduced..by my estimate...70% of all independent adult senior riders in Victorian motocross were gone from the sport before the end of the first year of this shit."

This was the last straw for me too. I raced alone and none of my mates weren't willing to stand in the sun all day. (fair enough). I was forced to flag one round which cost me my chance of winning the biggest plastic trophy. Sad

The families will follow to watch and support the entrant increasing gate takings for the host clubs and build crowd numbers.

10 riders per class , even if you get full gates that’s 1/4 of the revenue gone for the clubs running it , it just means the other 3/4 will need to pay more

Been there and done that...couldnt give a damn about whinging mini bike parents..those are the people that drove out the enthusiasts that used to run clubs...before the amalgamation....most independent adult riders hate mini bike parents with very good reason...
Ive been heavily involved with more clubs than youve had hot dinners mate...since the late 1970's.
Everything worked ok til the mini bike parent invasion...now all you can do is whinge about how it is that mini bike parents are the only ones the make things happen, its because they are the only ones left..no one likes them and no ond wants anything to do with them...except other mini bike parents
Clubs used to be entrepreneurial..they ran feature events that drew spectators..paying spectators..then the mini bike poarents took over and its all about the kids....no one wants to watch mini bike races except their parents..spectators at mx events are now a thing of the past

You say I whinge a lot? I have a national comp license and I race, do you? Or is it just your child that you pay for?
I whinge because i love my sport and ive seen it reduced from a pumping thing in the early 80"s to barely existing today.
From over 40 open senior races a year to less than 6 in Victoria
That is 100% the doing of MA and the mini bike parent invasion.

I dont wanna argue with you...you think junior mx is the bees knees and the parents are dedicated to making the sport work ...fine. lets split the sport back up to the way it was before...juniors have their tracks and their clubs and do their own thing and seniors do likewise

G’day Scott, I see what you are saying. My thoughts were the money would be made in other areas for the club. I am not across the entrant numbers this year But if the gate only has 20-30riders normally and it goes ahead with them numbers regardless, the extra 10 entries look better for the sport and generate more interest and spectators maybe?

Cheers mate

I can only talk of my experience from clubs this side of the ditch , but entry’s are usually most the income for clubs outside national championship events

Fair call PJ, I was only born in 86 so you have been involved in clubs longer than I have been alive so it good to hear this stuff.

It's sad to see it going the way it is...
