Nice job! I love it. I'm in the finishing stages of my 04 YZ125 build.

So, on the pipe. What was the process on the wire wheel/sanding to get the pipe looking good? Give me the breakdown of what wire wheel you used? brass? silver? Then the stages of grit on the sandpaper?

Thank you,
Danny
Dude, I can’t believe how fun this bike is. You’re going to be stoked when you get to rip that thing around for the first time.

I used a silver wire wheel to knock it down then followed up with 100 dry, 500 dry and 1000 wet. I was pretty impatient by the time I got to sanding so I didn’t spend much time on it. After that you can just hit it with some WD40 and scotchbrite after each wash and it goes right back to looking new.

Definitely wear a mask when wire wheeling. That baked on paint is nasty.

Great info! Ok, thanks man. Again, let me say well done on this build!

Hell yeah buddy. Look forward to seeing your finished whip.

If you put your grip tape skills to the test and feel like duplicating a set, I know a guy who might buy some from ya Wink

Awesome build man! Thing looks sweet...

I just recently bought an 04 125 as well and I was wondering exactly how you went about the sss swap. From what I've been reading, I can just drop the forks into the 2004 clamps and grind down the spacers 1mm on each side, is that right?? Or did you end up using the triple clamps from the donor bike???

Thanks in advance!

04, yes you can just drop the new forks in.

Will I need to grind the wheel spacers down??

I heard that in 2005 or 2006, they spread the triple clamps out by like 2mm and then they made up for that by casting the fork lugs in 1mm on each side so that the wheel setup stayed the same. This would make the sss forks in the 2004 clamps end up being 1mm too far in on each side.

Or is there something I was missing?

I have an 05 YZ250 with 06 clamps. I used a tusk wheel with the standard spacers for the yz's and no issues. I know guys that are running their standard wheels and spacers with newer forks and clamps.

Alright, so i did a little research and here's what I found.

MXA write up/test of the 2006 yz 125

(5) Triple clamps. The clamps have two major changes. First, the handlebar mounts are adjustable (across a 10mm range by rotating the bar mounts). Second, the center of the fork tubes have been positioned 2mm farther apart (from 190mm to 192mm). The extra width increases stability, but, because of new castings at the dropout, does not require a new front wheel, axle or axle spacers.

I searched some part numbers too and found that 2005 clamps were only used in 2005, reaffirming this.

matty, did you use the the whole 06 clamp/forks setup?? If so, then it makes sense that your's matched up perfect.

At first I only ran the top clamp until I finally had time to have the stem swapped from my 05 bottom clamp to the 06 bottom clamp.

hmmm that's interesting....

Makes it seem that 2005 and 2006 triple clamps are actually same width, as opposed to what MXA said.

I'll look into it some more... thanks for your input!

No problem. I thought the change came in 08, but I could be wrong. I know that was the year of the new fork lugs

I just had to order a few different brands. If I recall correctly there wasn't a single brand that made the color combo or had all in stock. Not a huge deal, but would have been easier to order from one website....

I somehow missed this whole conversation.

If it helps, I'm running a full 08 front end - clamps, forks, wheel spacers, axle, and I did not do any modifications. No stem swap or grinding of steering stop. Everything seems to work perfect. Bike handles awesome.

Thanks, man! I got your PM and tried to respond but the messaging system on Vital is the worst.

A buddy of mine designed the graphics. I'll see if he can chime in here.

I figured it was probably something like that so I appreciate the response. I’m having a heck of a time getting anything on decalworks etc to come out the way I want and you/he pretty much nailed it as far as what I’m after. Thanks again.

Welp, she had a bit of a problem a couple months ago so I decided it's time for a refresh.

Round 2 of this build:
Millennium 144
Crank Rebuild
Powdercoat frame/swingarm
Chain, guide, slider, roller
Brake lines/pads
Sprockets
Switching up to a gray/black/white scheme. Need to decide between Clark black tank, dye OEM tank, or tank covers...

Some pics so far, more in the next couple weeks...

Maybe I’m late to the party but for anyone working on these builds I highly recommend Pryme MX scotchbrite wheels for your bench grinder or dremel. After years of doing it by hand this is a game changer.

If you go for dyeing the OEM tank I'll be interested to see the results. I have a White Clarke tank on my RM125 and it is slowly but surely going yellow from the fuel so i want to dye it black. I've dyed a few things already on my YZ build with good results.

He's not shipping right now because of Covid but have you checked out Tribal Star out of Japan? He makes poly or carbon tank covers for YZs and RMs. Can choose black, white, or carbon. Cheaper than a Clark tank, less hassle than dye and you can always go back to your yellow if you still have your OEM tank. I think this is the route I'm going to go when shipping allows.

Would ya look at that. I guess in the end I don't mind supporting Pryme even at a premium. Cam seems like a good dude and I want to see businesses like his thrive.

Cool to see the bike progression Tyler! I jumped on the bandwagon and built one of my own last summer. One of my all time favorite bikes.. knew I would have another YZ125 one day, just had to find the right one. Brought it up to Joe's for him to try it but he jacked up his leg and couldn't ride.
