I think the switch to the grid start pad has been huge for him. His starts this year have been terrific compared to years past.

anyways, he can't win all races and there was simply 2 guys better than hin tonight. nothing to worry about.

He lost more time then any top 5 in the whoops and the long rytm section yesterday and it is not first time you can see he is not comfortable on it.
He got third overall, he obviously can't be that bad..

He was struggling with setup it seems. Bike wouldn't turn in the long corner after the woods either.

Tomac had speed just seemed like he had a hard time putting the whole track together cleanly. Not sure why he gets third overall and people are so quick to bash the guy, Anderson and Musquin are great riders and Webb showed us all what we kind of expected from him when he first entered the class. No big deal in my book. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the triple crown format, I like watching the heats and such that build up the anticipation for one final race for all the marbles.

It was a rare night for Tomac. We’ve come to expect him to be Stewart 2.0. COW! But he was “only” a top five guy all night. Which is obviously fine when it comes to the championship. If he’d adapted this mindset previously of course.

It looked to me like he was just having an off night. I don't think it had anything to do with the track being rough or rutted or the layout itself, sometimes as a rider you just aren't in your groove. The best you can do in situations like this is just keep the bike up on 2 wheels and try to ride consistent laps to finish with a top 5, get the hell out of there and move on to the next week. If he was a serious contender for the points right now, he'd be pretty damn happy with his overall results for the night, but unfortunately since he's so far behind in points anything other than a win is just going to make the season that much longer.

And now the burden on Tomac is either win or be questioned why you didn't win. It's ridiculous, and no other rider in the field is subject to the same level of expectations and analysis.

I kinda have to agree with this, it's crazy though because in the past, and especially when he was on the Honda 450, he did better the rougher the track got. In 2015 nobody could hang with him when the track got rutted up. Remember NY 2015, he lapped up to like 7th place. In 2014 his rookie year, every podium he got was on a track that was extremely rutted.

Don't understand how people have not noticed this. He ride tense and makes mistakes specially in long rytm sections with lots of ruts in. Corners with ruts is not a problem for him.
