I'm drinking a stout called Mephistophiles from Avery Brewing. It's 17% alcohol. Dang. Most potent stuff I ever drank.

Damn, does it taste like beer or does it verge on tasting like alcohol? I drink beers up to 12% that are really good but they still taste like beer (good beer at that).

Oh, yeah...

Anyone ever had EKU 28, or Spaten Dopple Bach?

Both very dark beers over 14%, but not alcoholly.

Too sweet for my taste, though.

Gotta admit this stuff was kinda sweet. Strange to drink a beer that has a bite similar to a liquor. Good brew, though. If you can get Avery brew in your area, try them. Old Jubilation is my favorite. I guess a lot of people like their IPA, too. I'm into their stouts, though.

Try Flying Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA....it is @20% ABV. Strong stuff.

Dogfish has some pretty good beers. I didn't care too much for the 120 minute IPA though. Too pricey too. It was like $12 for a 12 oz bottle.

17% stout? Must have been a Russian Empirial Stout. That's the only style stout I know of that can reach that size. normal stouts hover around the 4-5% range.

Of course one can brew what ever they want, and call it anything, it might not be a recognized catagory though...Just sayin'.


To answer your original question, no, that's not a beer, it's an ale.

Just went and found the answer: In it's original form, root beer was brewed as a beer with the use of roots. It also contained alcohol of about 2% and was used as an herbal medicine.

i've had my fair share of stouts, porters, ale (IPA, Belgian, etc), but never had that one.. I have had Spaten double boch (optimator), at a german restaurant in FLA. it was very good..


SEEMEFIRST - Dogfish Head World Wide Stout is listed at 18%.. its a nice drink, but you can only tolerate 1 or 2, without killing your taste buds for an evening. IMHO, the flavor and enjoyment of strong stouts and ales drops steeply once you get over 12%


j, if you ever get the chance to have one of the KoningsHoeven Quads, do it. You will not be disappointed. It is "fairly" easy to find, a trappist brew, and is about 10%.

also, just about anything you get from southern tier is excellent.

I've had the Dogfish Head WWstout. It's a big mf'er to be sure. It's an Imperial Stout.

I guess I was getting into the minutia a little too much in my previous post.

The key to drinking big beers/ales is to start small and work your way up. Like you said, if you start with a world wide stout you'll not be able to taste anything but straight scotch after that.

If you like Belgian's might I suggest a Delirium Tremens. They're about 10%..Sneaky bastards they are, but quite good.
