I didn't know today was Grouchy Poster Monday.

His lap times did improve a lot between the first and second practice session, but was he on pace? Not really. The field's a lot deeper this year.

lol, i agree, 100% peelout. i HATE the "keeping the number" rule. i mean, for God's sake, no one can use 5 or 6 this year because of Larocco and Lamson! are you kidding me? those guys were tremendous champions, but they otta be ashamed of themselves for keeping those numbers. if a rider is retired, his number should be up for grabs, but i am also a proponent of using the old numbering system where you use the number you've EARNED the year before, and wear it as an accomplishment!

He will race Glen Helen and keep the number. Same with next year. And the year after.
The guy is still top 40 fitness and speed outdoors.

yeah he earned the hell out of it... but time to turn it over right?

whats the point in keeping it, just so you can race one race per year?

i wasn't being grouchy, always been a brown fan. but it's time to let it go.

Its not so anyone can use it. You have to have won a National Championship to qualify to use any numbers #2 thru #9. Thats why Lamson & LaRocco numbers are not in use. The only number that is held out and thats for just a few years is #4.

Top 10 numbers...and especially top 5 numbers should be reserved for 450 champions only.

I hate seeing RV with #2!!!!

i just hate the whole "nascar" numbering system. put the top 99 guys in order of points at the end of each year and give them the number they earned, just like they did it old school. if you were (keyword being WERE) a national champ, you got to ride with a number one on your bike the next year. if you came back the next year and didn't win, you rode with the number you earned. hannah rode with 100 in 1981 because injury killed his 1980 season. this was after multiple championships! the idea that we are "marketing" riders by use of their numbers is lost on me. they change gear companies, bikes, and sponsors all the time. why should they have a permanent number? 3, 5, 6, even preston's 11 should be with the guys who've earned those spots in the standings last year. and i know i have alot of them, but it's just my opinion.

who cares... it's just a number. and it's not like all the single digit numbers are used up at the moment. i think 5 and 6 are available. im not a big fane of the numbering system anyway. i liked knowing where the guy finished the previous year by seeing their number.

The AMA number system is AFU. It does need to go back to old system of 1-99.

Canadian MX is like that...You earn the number.
And it means something to wear your accomplishments.

Isn't the top 20 numbers actually reserved? I was thinking they we're.( example preston #11 , Voss #13 , KW #14 , Ferry #15 and so forth) I do think the number #21 up to100 should be up for grabs every year with a combined point system. Using the 450 SX/MX and lites outdoor stuff and hand out the numbers accordingly. The problem with RV #2 is that , he was so dominant last year in the lites class in the nationals....didn't he have enough points to earn the #2? I could be wrong on that , not sure. But i don't think he needed the extra points from not racing the big bikes indoors.

BUT...it is kind of a good thing with the reserved numbers like nascar , because of the marketing aspect of it. It gives a rider a chance to market that number in ways which could make him a little extra money i think. And we all know , these guys don't make crap compared to what they should be getting paid.

We all complain that most of the factory guys and top privateers don't make enough , the reserved numbering system ( if used correctly) could open up some doors for them to make some extra money.

Also...a side note....whoever decides to use the #4 in the next year or so....is going to have to have a major set of balls! Those are some big shoes to fill!

just sayin'.......

still saying brown needs to let it go.

i understand jeffro's post, it makes a lot of sense. but if you're going to look at it that way, have them be reserved for those still competing week in and week out in the series. not just one race a year to keep a number you earned 23 years ago

no hate in that post at all.

he earned his number when he was racing full time, and was credited the number.

but after all this time of not racing the series, why hang onto it?

Yep...i agree with that to. Some of the guys that haven't really been competitive over the last few years , only race that 1 , 2 or possibly 3 races to get that ONE POINT so they can keep their number...is wrong. there are some exceptions like what Henry did....shit , he was still in the mix at southwick a few years after a full retirement....Dowd to. But i think guys like lamson....he needs to let it go , and Brown is getting to that point to , except Brown ( if he does the nats) will still make for some good racing inside the 5th - 20th i think.....which i guess works for him on keeping the number as well. he's never really been a good SX rider , but he has done pretty good outdoors.

I remember a few years back ol' Chuck sun showed up and tried to qualify for Washougal. The AMA told him he could run a top 10 available #...he wisely turned it down HAHA! Even though Chuck can still ride pretty well....i think he was around 20th-30th in the last chance qualifier. Just think if he would of grabbed a top 10 number and rode like that....Jesus...talk about embarrassment!

Well, the 250f's are the only class where were certain (not just contenders) to have a new person eligible for a single digit.

I am against the perm number system. However, rules are rules, and Brown can wear the #3 as long as he's able to earn it.

And I think the rules do not require you to earn points every year, only every second year. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

I think it states you have to earn 1 point that year...to be able to carry that number the following year...but i could be wrong. Anyone know for sure?

+1

I am very much against the premanent number dealio too, but...

As long as the rules are what they are and you are enough of a BMF to earn the required points, more power to ya.

Brownie finished the 3 hour GNCC coming from a bad start to finish 4th and said he still had "some left". What a stud.

I can certainly understand both sides of this debate. One question I have is if the permanent number system was introduced so riders could market themselves, what good does it actually acomplish? As far asI know you cant buy anything from any rider at the races.Does every thing go thru tfs's pet octopuss?Could someone in the know enlighten me on the subject?
