I can tell you from watching the race today, he got smoked like a cheap cigar.

Herlings passed him like he was sitting still. Championship be damned, I would think as a national champ, I'd at least try and race the rookie, foreign, borrowed bike rider as his first US race. But hey that's just me.
No Fucking way anyone with half a brain would have expected him to do anything to race Herlings in that 2nd Moto.

I watched Eli Tomac at Glen Helen destroy everyone in the GP class last year with my own eyes, it was unreal! He was able to ride there with nothing to lose, I don't remember who was where in the GP points battle at that time. Herlings was able to ride today with a free nothing to lose attitude like Tomac did last year. I was blown away with how much faster Eli was than everyone else at Glen Helen, as Herlings mirrored today. I haven't seen today's races yet but believe what JH accomplished today may be even more impressive as far as his lack of ride time on this particular track. Who wouldn't love to see these two as well as others go head to head while riding with nothing to lose mindsets! Congrats ET on the championship as well as JH on his dominating day, watching people who are the best at what they do is very enjoyable.

Eli's nightmares visited today, the day was supposed to be his and he was overshadowed and throughly schooled, a bittersweet ending

Race him for what? It was stupid of Tomac to
even try in the first moto. If he had hurt himself in that first moto crash you'd probably be the first one saying he should have rode for the points, got the championship and show everyone what he's got at the USGP in a weeks time.

You must have watched it on a 56k modem. There was nothing bitter sweet about him taking the #1 plate today

I vagly remember last year US GP's that they changed some rules to use US spec fuel because the AMA riders would not line up unless they were allowed, as for Jeffrey on a foreign bike, not really the bike does not change that much besides the fuel spec and the exhaust so not completely foreign. It's an adjustment for sure but not foreign.

Next week ET3 will win, the euro's are not used to the heat and we have seen Jeffrey and almost everyone struggle at Ottobiano this year. if there is a challenger for Tomac it wil be Cairoli as he's allowed to use cortisone inhalers for his "astma" and we have seen he was pretty good at Ottobiano where others struggled with the heat and humidity.

All in all Awesome to see JH go from 39th to 1st (would have been 2nd if Marvin did not move over) Noren who was down on the ground with JH also managed to get 6 points.

Congratulations to ET3 for his first ever AMA 450 outdoor championship, it has been a long road since his crash with the Geico honda during the 3th round of 2015.

Marvin's DNF with the front brake issue will haunt him for a long time he could easily rode the race and score atleast some points this field is not super deep and should have been able to score a handfull of points. Same counts for his weirdo crash at Milville he should have settled for 2nd. Although he missed the championship by a few these lessons will help him in the future though

Bagget has proven to be a contender in the 450 outdoors we have seen el chupacabre this year so it's only going to get better.

I never heard about the cortisone inhaler situation before. Wow! I am surprised there hasn't been an outbreak of "asthma" over there.

Yup watched Herlings beat on the 250 guys there last year, while Jmart was shaking down his new Geico ride, but that was no surprise. I'd forgotten or did not know that TC was injured last year at that race.

We all know that a truly unrestricted ET3 has way more in the tank than what he showcased today. Is the bike a tick off and he doesn't have 100% comfort/confidence? Is there an unknown physical issue or is there something mental? Maybe he was just in Dungey/racecraft mode as best he could be, though Dungey didn't have all the little errors that Eli has.

If ET would have finished 30 sec ahead of Marvin straight up without anyone making any errors and JH still bested him, then I would believe that both riders showcased their abilities to their maximum. From past performances we know that this is not the pinnacle of Tomacs game. I do realize how ironic this paragraph is considering he just wrapped up a championship.

All these AMA/GP riders are obviously elite, though there are many tiers. I believe that there is more depth in the GP series at the moment but if you take the top 3-5 guys from each one you find another level. They are all savages that when at their best is unbelievable!

The whole two best series in MX on each side of the pond is goofy in some ways. In auto racing F1 is considered the pinnacle of auto racing, MotoGP is the top of the pavement guys so maybe the top three AMA guys should bump to MXGP? They would then be racing a world series, because call it what you want, AMA racing is national racing.

Maybe you don't follow the GP's close enough Silly Laughing Laughing
It has been an issue for some years for some people as he gets a ( unfair ) advantage but he has a legitimate subscription for it ( I have Asthma as well and the advantages off a cortisone inhaler are pretty big, for me as i have a very bad asthma, don't really know how big the difference is for someone thats in shape)

I kinda wish Cairoli could have come over under the same "nothing to lose" circumstances. Herlings and Cairoli probably woulda traded 1-2/2-1. Cairoli's the only guy I trust to challenge Herlings consistently. None of these AMA guys.

Oh, and remember how Charlotte showed us that Webb was "the best young rider"? Remember that?

No Tomac did exactly what he should have done and that's race to win. That's what racers do. Yes, he had a mistake, and finished 5th. But go look at the last couple races where he raced not to lose. He did a lot worse then 5th.

Had he not had that little mistake he could have won the Moto possibly and sealed up the championship. There was no way he could just ride around in second. Either race to win or just have points sucked away from you like what has happened to Eli previously.

Tomac himself said he let his ego get the better of him in moto 1. All he had to do was finish ahead of Musquin and Bagget. You do know that right?

What do you expect him to say?

He's done worse without a crash. So yeah, he did what he should have done which was race to win. Sure, he crashed going for it. But that's better doing that and finishing 5th then riding around and finishing 8th or worse. He wasn't riding over his head. He had a mistake going for the lead. He finished better doing that then bleeding away points like he was doing.

KTM management I feel could care less that JH did not move over for MM. There wasn't the possibility of MM winning the championship with Eli's results, yet KTM just filled out the podium with a dominant performance that will be talked about for some time. KTM definitely owns MX these days

Yes. The points Marvin needed had nothing to do with Herlings. Only way Marvin wins is a mechanical or injury. If the points were a lot closer then sure maybe Herlings checks up. But the points were not close so there was no need for any of that.

Man, it was tough to not comment in this thread.

Terrific ride by Herlings. Tomac earns his title. All good.

Saving it up for after next weekend. Wink

It's a possibility but I dont think Tomac will let that happen. I predict a brain disconnected.

Good points.
I wouldn't make too many judgments from The Ironman. Except that Herlings is really impressive and MM, ZO and AC rode hard.

The rest of them pretty much mailed it in, and Eli did what he had to do.

Very little drama as usual. I mean c'mon, did anyone really think ET wasn't going to win the title?

I've went to this race every year except this year. I only live 1.5 hours away but it 's just not worth it to me anymore.
The racing isn't that great, and most of the riders are just wanting to get the season over. Add to that all the good riders who are injured. The facility is awesome and the fans deserve a better show. If JH hadn't come over to race there would be very few story lines.
The crowd was clearly not as big as previous years, even though we had perfect weather here.

Our sport needs to do something to make the final races more compelling. Instead of it dwindling down and ending with a whimper. We need some sort of season ending excitement. Otherwise the crowds will continue to decline. IMO

Of course but it wouldn't have mattered. The lap Tomac passed AC in he was almost 6 seconds faster at Glen Helen Moto 2. AC is better this year, but not that much.

Yesterday's race was one of my favorites for sure. I'm so glad I went. Herlings looked so good out there.
