Old School CZ 400

I just got done going through this bike. It was built for the 1981 CZ World Championships in SoCal back then. It has a 9 port cyclinder, D&H reed valve, porting by Gary Mickles (RIP), obviously Simons forks, Magnum pipe, Buchanan spokes, and a host of other cool things done to it. It is basically new.

Very nice. Are they Curnutt shocks?

I had a 73 400 that I moved the shocks forward and laid down at that angle. Used Bilstien shocks , it worked really well for that point in time.

Beautiful, love that husky tank. That's a nice mod I'd bet. Personally I'd chop that rear frame loop off....then again they call me Tumblin

Thanks guys, I had thought about the rear frame loop but.........I tried to keep this bike correct as to what it was built for.

And yes the shocks are Curnutt. They are custom built by me. I worked for Charles back in the 70's and 80's. I still rebuild them for the vintage guys.

I've got a pair of 5" travel Curnutts hanging on the wall, just in case I ever need them again. I think you guys built them for my '77 Montesa VB 360. Geez, it's hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago.

I wish I had my last CZ still, damn it almost sucks being a poor dirt biker....living from bike to bike Lol.
Anyway, this one was a Stormie Winter modded frame. A bit more agressively moved forward than yours Chayzed. I used the blue Gerlings but it lacked the proper spring rate. In combination with the front Marzzochi's I really didn't have the knowledge or time to dial it all in. It would be cool to make another run at it now.

That would be a cool CZ to own. Is the pipe a Mid Valley? I had one on a 250 Falta years ago.

As a bloke that recently squashed a friend's pristine Pursangs down pipe, that Snail Pipe above looks perfect for the OPs bike. Snail pipes seem , strangely, perfect for CZs. Though, with that tank you have, you've plenty of pipe routing options.

My friend took it well, saying he had an up pipe coming already, but, too bloody late. Any time I get near a downpiped bike, it's not a good thing. At least I've got all of the tooling to blow it back out again, but geeze I felt like a complete bastard being the one to desecrate his rebuild.

I can't remember who made the pipe, but I don't believe it was MidValley. Grandpa Villopoto put that one on for me, I'm sure he'd remember. A side note; that pipe almost cost me a championship when I slid out and impacted the end with dirt.
Here's my first CZ I had. I went through 3 of the 400's and not sure how many of my pipes resembled this one...

Neat photos you guys have posted. Let's keep it going!! Here's a shot from Scott Burnworth's So Cal Vintage MX Classic last month. Completely ruined 2nd gear input and output that day. Currently sidelined while the trans gets a rebuild, but I'll be back at it soon!!

I had heard a few months ago he hadn't passed. Thanks for confirming he is still around. I used his pipes on all my CZ'S.

Loved my CZ400! Photo was shot back in 1974. It's a '74 red frame mx model with the shocks laid down. Had a pair of early gas Girlings with highly questionable spring rates. I believe it had the Terry Kit 1" fork rod extenders with air assist in them. Would have killed for your bike back then! Nice job!

I've done some more to the bike since this pic was last taken. It now has some period correct Andre bars, custom fuel tank, porky head, and short shifter kit I built for it this past month. I need to go ride it when it cools down.

Don't know if you were around then........ but the shot was taken at Escape Country in Trabuco Canyon. It was the big jump by the starting line. Good old days Cool

Tumblin , was your bike ever in norcal , bought one several yrs back out of norcal that looks like one in your pic . Have it in storage . will look at it again , has zochs same pipe etc.

I purchased at Fred Villopoto's Eureka Cycle and Accessories....Eureka, CA. It was Raced mainly in Dist 36...drag that CZ out of your shed and post some photos! Although I pulled and sold those marzzochi forks separately.

I've just found my 81 Maico 490, but I had 3 of those CZ 400s and My first choice for a vintage rebuilt racer
