Keefer's Dirt Rider dirt on Pulp show

Pulp show live right now, Keefer explaining how/why he departed from Dirt Rider... Two sides to every story but man this sounds shitty. Currently a subscriber to the Dirt Rider print mag... No plans to renew now. Big difference between management and leadership.. Everything happens for a reason... Stoked on Keefer's trajectory. https://www.keeferinctesting.com/

I feel like its a pretty accurate story honestly. It wouldnt be the first time that someone in the moto industry was given a bullshit ultimatum. Also they bring up valid points because they always talked about dirt rider on the show. Keefer always mentioned his tests and articles for the mag, and Keefer honestly has been the face of dirt rider for the last few years because of pulp mx. It just didnt make sense that keefer would leave as much as he talked dirt rider up also keefer was always extremely professional when it came to his role there. Dirt rider probably just killed itself.

Print media is almost dead and will be obsolete within a few more years. This almost sounds like a TMZ type effort to remain relevant.

This didn't surprise me... Steve will always jump on the grenade for the guys who don't want to "go there" themselves, regardless of how deserving it is

Never even paid attention to that mag unless it was a Keefer test or shootout.

His PR about his new project said he "immediately resigned"

So did he get ousted or did he quit?

Call me a dork but I liked it for that exact reason; to keep hard copy archives on hand for testing articles. Over it now. Expecting "Keefer rating" to become to gold standard.

Basically what dirt rider said was either you work exclusively for dirt rider or you cant work here. So keefer quit.

Good comment. Walked in right after this segment started but sounds like an ongoing shitty deal that made it clear it was time to begin a new chapter.. Editing my wording now. Thanks

Very true. Racer x has taken a neat path with the exclusive in mag only write ups in order to keep it going and for 12 a year its totally worth it.

Spot on assessment.

On a side note, I'm not currently listening to the show but I am really surprised that everything came to light this quickly. Hopefully no one tries to pull anything crappy since Keefer and Matthes have spoken out about the whole thing.

I dont know how DR could really even argue with kris and steves points. The moto industry is so small. Think about Keefers reach in the industry with riders and teams. He was trying to finish his time at DR by doing a write up on Zach Osbornes 250 and was going to ride it at Aldons place. Who the fuck else in the media would have a reach like that? DR literally cut their throats on this move.

Exactly! I think this is going to put a dent into DR, in more ways than one.

Seems to me the whole deal is just a symptom of a dying magazine. Over the last year the magazine has gotten so thin I thought the mail lady must have ripped half the pages out.

Dirt Rider wasn't that good except for Keefer's articles. Plus I liked him from PulpMx so kept subscribing but I won't renew this time around.

He got out before the meltdown: good for the Keefer.

Episode is available now through the podcast apps (iTunes, stitcher, pulp app). Not sure when they post it to the site itself. The info you're looking for starts around 1:53:30

Are these companies even making money off the magazine? It's like they are forcing and begging people to subscribe. The web is where everyone is. If they want to offer premium content and a price, push out an app and charge for that. You can set it up to bill annually. I would think pushing content out through an app is considerably cheaper than printing and mailing magazines...but what do I know..

Dirt Rider seems to have always been a little unstable. They've gone through various publishing houses. I remember when Tom Webb went over there. Didn't Donn Maeda work there for a short time before spinning off that MX Racer magazine? Ken Faught, Jimmy "XR400" Lewis. Jesse Ziegler was cool and he bounced. Adam Booth. It's been a revolving door over there. Their main guy was always Stormin Mormon Karel Kramer but he's been gone for some time now. Seems like they could never find the right recipe.

I guess on the other hand, you have Jody's dictatorship over at Hi Torque. That's the opposite end of the spectrum I suppose.

In my mind there has never been a better magazine guy than Rick Sieman. He was the "populist" dirt bike magazine editor. His mentality sort of reminded me of Freiburger/Finnigan wherein form always followed function and it was all about getting out there - whether that meant riding an open class Maico or a 90cc Hodaka didn't matter one bit. He even looked the part.

That's what I think the 2-stroke movement is. I think it's a cry for help from people that feel like they aren't being represented. Working stiffs of modest means and no interest in impressing others with bling. We need a magazine (print or web-based) for this crowd. People who spin their tires around to squeeze a couple extra motos out of them. People who run OEM oil fill plugs instead of aftermarket anodized units. People with worn graphics and mismatched gear. I mean no disrespect but Raining Yellow comes to mind. He gets some grief every once in a while but that dude is as core as they come. I have tons of respect for home boy. I see him at the track. Modest compact pickup truck. YZ250 smoker. No graphics. Dude got Pourcel's front fender at Hangtown one year and instead of hanging it on the wall, he ended up having to run it on his bike when a replacement was needed. I'll step off my soapbox now but I feel like the magazines have diverted their attention away from these folks. I'm so sick of the crazy bike builds that hardly anyone can afford to do and are meant only as an advertising platform. Zero substance.

Sorry for the rant. Best of luck to Keefer #comfort #feel

MX_563, Your last paragraph spoke to my soul.

Can anyone clarify which Pulp Podcast (#?) this is referencing? I saw the comment above from Marx about "The info you're looking for starts around 1:53:30", but the podcast # would help.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I'm pretty sure it's show #299

I grew up on "Rondo Talbot" and Super Hunky which pretty much makes me a bitter middle aged man now. Ha ha!
