Biggest surprises/disappointments of 2017

5/8/2017 5:47am
Biggest surprises:
Blake Baggett - better speed than I expected, bring on outdoors!
Eli Tomac - figured he would win many but so many in row was a surprise.
The whole season - usually I can't stand to watch anymore SX once the MXGP's start but this year was really exciting!

Jordan Smith - speaks for itself I guess.
Joey Savatgy - not a positive surprise, just surprised how he can throw away that many opportunities to clinch the title.
Dylan Ferrandis - thought he would be a 8-12th place guy, proved me way wrong.

Biggest disappointments:
Cole Seely - I know he's been hurt but I really expected him to be a steady top 3 contender, also gives up position a little easy it seems.
Davi Millsaps - honestly, he had a pretty good season, but there were so many racers where Dungey would blow by in the last lap or two and Davi wouldn't even show a fight.
Justin Bogle and Malcolm Stewart - so many crashes...
Jmart/Craig - Mediocre seasons for the main title favourites...

Tomacs speed this year was surprising. Ive always known he was good outdoors. But his sx speed was always lacking. He make the field look like turtles.

Disappointed in forkner. I was expecting a consistent podium finish from him.

AC did pretty good for his struggles the last few years.

Hill was a surprise.

I was hoping webb would do the #2 good. Maybe next year. Rv didnt do too hot his first year either. So its not a total loss yet.

Roczen basically ending his career was surprising too. I hope he can come back but its just not looking too hot.

The entire ktm/husky armada went as expected.

Bagget and Grant. Good.

Webb... not so good.

Kenny. That sucked.

Barcia really shocked me. I expected him to be a top 5 guy. Hopefully he shows up for outdoors.

Surprise - Kroc and the speed he showed on an all new bike.

Disappointment - his crash. So bummed.

He's so lost it's not funny. In the prime of his career, in 4 years he's gone from taking wins as a rookie to struggling to stay inside the top 10.

Perhaps one of the biggest factory rider "it" superstar descents the sport has ever seen. Pretty unbelievable.

I was surprised JS7 didn't race. I thought he would have been back by Daytona.

Suprise/positives - How dominant ET, Dung, and Moose-can were. Consistently yarded the field. BTO KTM doing as well as they did. Tickle was good. JG good.

Disappointments - I thought this would be Cole Seely's break out year, has the talent just needs to quit being pushed around. Anderson was all over the map. Reed and Webb just so so, thinking that Yamadog not so good indoors. Freckle getting hurt. The Martin brothers just had a rough year. DV ruining Craig. Lol. JGR team curse continues.

Baggett most improved 450 SX rider. Starts, qualifying directly from heat, race pace vastly improved.

Hill got another chance with PC and made the best of it.

Anyone on a Suzuki looked to take a few steps back from last season.

What/who were your biggest surprises/disappointments of the 2017 Supercross season?

Surprises:
Hill - Not many picked him to win the title.
Osbourne - I figured he'd be good, but his improvement was major.
Jordon Smith - Did not expect him to compete for the title.
AC - I'm a big fan, but I didn't expect him to nearly pull off the title, or for him to win two races, to be honest. I thought it would just be a building year, but he showed he's still got amazing speed.
Dungey - Didn't think he could hold off Tomac. Yeah, I know Tomac pretty much threw it away, but Dungey is just always so solid.

Disappointments:
Webb - I know he was a rookie, but I think you'd have to consider being a borderline top ten guy for the majority of the races to be a disappointment.
Barcia - was pretty much just awful.
Forkner - I know it was his first year of supercross, but a lot of people were picking him to win the title and he didn't even get close to winning a race.
Canard - More injuries.
You made this list with no mention of Roczen? That was the biggest surprise...and disappointment.

I'm not surprised he didn't race. Just disappointed the way he has handled this whole season, without a single word 'for the fans'.
Also disappointed with Malcolm's inability to stop crashing so damned much. Seems like practically every race he shows top ten speed but takes soil samples on a regular basis. Has he had even one race this year without a crash?

The 450 RMZ seemed uncompetitive this year than compared to last years bike with mostly the same riders.

Nelson, Alldredge, Alberston... just to name a few off the top of my head. Those guys deserve an honorable mention. They paid the price and I wish them the best in their recovering.

SURPRISES: 1.) Baggett-his sx improvement [dark horse for MX too] 2.) Tomac- his amazing speed. 3.) Osborne- combo of Baggett and Tomacs seasons in sx.
DISAPPOINTMENTS: 1.) Kenny-going down and the uncertainty of that.2.) Savatgy- 2nd season in a row to kind of blow the end. 3.) JS7- his vanishing act!

Surprise (not in a good way): Savatgy. Osbourne looked great this year, but he was beatable. Not in pure speed but over the course of the championship. Savatgy had ample opportunity to lock down the title and he just couldn't get it done. Even on his win nights he never had the look of the fastest guy on the track that he had at a few points last season. Just didn't look racy.

i disagree with this , peick was very very good at the start of the year . and people never take notice of him ever but Tickle this year was the fastest we have ever seen in the 450 class untill his injury. again his starts sucked but his speed was impressive i think outdoors he will be the surprise and get a good few podium s

barica was terrible i agree with that
bogle was fast ,and threw away alot of ,what could have been top 5s . but not a good year for him
i was very dissapointed with weimer , i thought he could of really made a step this year back to where he was before ,

Biggest surprise for me was joey loosing the championship.
And biggest disappointment would be js7 not showing face at all and letting a lot of fans down for just going into hiding

I think Bagget improved in speed this year , But people really forget how good he was in SX in 2015 , he had a bit better results that year .people have short memories of how good he was . I was nt surprise by how he rode this year at all

No James for the win! People still haven't realized he really retires 5 years ago and just never made a public statement about it!!
