because tomac has been THE star of this season. tomac gave us a real impressive and exciting title hunt to watch and showed us some of the best race performances we have seen in many many years. he brought the entertainment. this season has tomac written all over it.
maybe it's time to reward wins more in this sport, but that's probably another discussion.

The record books will not show that, just the guy that backed his way into another title. Whistling

Wins need to be rewarded by giving more points.

You know what, I forgive Eli. He had a front brake issue that undeniably cost him a lot. For him to put his head down and charge to many winning weeks how he did is an unpresidented collection of performances in my book. He hit a wall last weekend, whatever. He'll win again, and probably sooner than you think. He'll be there to fight for that outdoor title, too using what he learned this year about titles and riding smart in his arsenal. I see him being a force to be reckon with in the summer.

I don't know, I'm not a Dungey fan but never get that kind of discussion. Chase format, more points for the win....anything that helps to take it away from Dungey and give it YOUR star of the season? It is what it is and everybody knew that it is about points in the end. And everybody knew that it is not about rough speed, talent, populatity or anything else. Everybody has issues over the season and it is not that tomac had any bad misfortune like a mechanical DNF or a major injury or something like that. I don't get it but you know, just my opinion Wink

I think the front brake issue is being overlooked a little bit, had the part not failed and caused him to crash I think we'd be having a very different conversation right now. Obviously it's racing and it happens and you should have all those issues worked out before the season but I really don't think you can completely overlook this fact.

Some people have said that Eli should have backed it down and played it smart like Dungey but after those first few rounds he didn't give himself any other option, he had to just go for and he sure as hell did and damn near pulled off one of the best comebacks in the history of the sport, against the most consistent rider in the sport. That's one hell of a feat. No matter who ends up with this title the real winners are us fans, I don't care if you like Dungey, Tomac or James Stewart this is a season for the ages.

actually he had a mechanical. but that's not the point I was trying to make.
nobody turned on the tv to see if dungey can extend his pointslead. people turned on the tv to see tomac chase down everyone and make one of the greatest comebacks in points to win the title we have seen in a long time. that's what excited people. not to see how dungey klicks off his 2nd's and 3rd's week after week.

I edited to "mechanical DNF" for gods sake Laughing

To be honest, I don't know why people turn on the tv. I for one turn it on to watch MX in all it's facets. I think it's in the eye of the beholder who brought the excitement. I mean, imagine Dungey would have been out early like in the outdoors last year...

It matters a little bit. That will make 4 450 supercross titles for him. I can't think of a whole lot of people that can say they won four premier supercross titles.

Where you clowns getting this mechanical excuse at? Matthes had Tomac on Pulp and said there was nothing wrong with that incident except for the fact Eli washed the front end again.

Tomac did what Tomac does, and Dungey did what Dungey does,

Say what you want about 3 points last weekend or his mechanical issue, he lost it in the first 3 rounds when he couldn't get the ball rolling, that was all him.

Dungey "if" he wins will deserve it, there's no crowns and no gifts. He will have won it with his ride at Daytona when he collected max points for the situation he was dealt

I'm a big fan of Tomac. Early this year when he was struggling and everyone was blaming the bike and speculating that he would bail on the Kawi deal, I was very much into the idea that he might take Dungey's spot at KTM. But they finally figured it out, Eli won some races and re-upped his current contract. Cool enough. I was sick for him Saturday night. He had fought hard to get into title contention and then just folded. No excuses. I really like that and it makes me more of a fan. Whatever happens this week, the title will be won by a man that did everything in his power to do his job. I seriously doubt that we see anything but a handshake between the two of them at the end of it. I doubt just as seriously that we see anything near the same sort of respect and grace displayed in here.

Actually it sounds like YOU turned on your TV to see that, it didn't happen (yet) and so you got all pissy about it!

Maybe I'm weird but I just watched every week to see what would happen, and enjoy the races..

The rules at the start of the season were:

We'll run all the races and the rider with the most points at the end of the season wins the championship.
All understood?? Ok, let's ride.

Theres more to championship wins than outright speed. Otherwise we'd be crowning Kroc this year..

You've gotta get your shit together from round 1 and keep it together all year.
You've gotta be consistent.
You cannot afford a bad day.
Bike and/or rider must not fail.

Dungey wins. 2017 is over. Let's see if Tomac (and Kawi) can get his shit together in round 1 next year and keep it together all year. It'll be a big ask from a rider who has shown more than once now, that he cannot do it.

Dungey is very deserving of this championship. Anyone who thinks otherwise is retarded.

Think they are talking about his front brake issue at the start of the start of the season which he caused jumping into the back of someone.

Yep and I actually like that we've got two dudes with two completely different ways of going about getting this championship and it's gonna be decided at the last round!

Agree, and perfectly stated. I don't understand why some simple minded people want to hand the title over to the person with the most wins when that person DID NOT collect the most points.

Yeah him jumping into someone in the heat race caused his brake to fail in the main..

No it was in the main. He had to pit and get his line cut. That's the one that really cost him the title.

If we're going to bring mechanicals into discussion, I recall a mechanical or two costing Dungey a couple of his close championships. . .

I seem to remember "nobody cares when they look at the championship standings". Well that applies here too.

I never expected to open this post and see so much win from so many different Vital posters.

Well said, my German friend. Great season all around. I've admitted before to being partial to Eli, but I'm a big fan of good racing and of all riders finishing safely.

As someone above noted, the record books will remember only the champion, but I don't think any of us are going to forget Ryan or Eli and 2017 SX.

Yeah I guess I was too quick to criticize . All he's saying is it was a great season . And it certainly was no matter who wins it.

Tomac must have it written in his contract that a championship bonus is the same as being the star bonus.

Where was the speed and mental toughness from THE star in NJ? Think of how Ryan rode with the points lead. Then look how Eli rode with the points lead.
