So the story I was told when I bought my 85 CR 250 project is that the bike was a give away at a Honda dealership and Bob Hannah autographed (engraved) the gas tank of these bikes. Just showroom bikes, not factory rides or anything. Now I'm older and my memory is a bit foggy but was 85 the first year of Hannah at Honda? Perhaps there might be some truth to this? I didn't put any bearing on the story in my buying decision but it would be a cool thing. Doing a light resto on the old girl so the plastics got wet sanded and buffed. Was careful not to sand away the engraving just in case. LOL. I bought the bike in western PA, but the guy I bought it from only was told the story when he got it, doesn't know any more than that

He started with Honda before 85, 82 I believe. He was with Suzuki in 86, maybe sooner. That much I know.

Yes before 85.. His first year at Honda was 83. He took over Donnie Hansen's ride when Donnie got hurt. 85 was his last year on Honda. 86-89 on Suzuki as a rider, then a handful more years as a consultant there. Although I never heard of this giveaway, Hannah spent some time on the mend that year and could possibly been doing dealer promotion type stuff. I think it does look like his signature.

Yes I do remember hearing of this in the 80s I think I read about it in a cycle magazine, I always stayed away from Honda two strokes, Yamaha and Suzuki's were my weapons of choice

I remember 1978 or 1979 they raffled of one of his sx bikes after a race, or is my memory clouded?

That was the 77 Daytona SX. I'm surprised that doesn't stand out in moto history more than it does. That was monumental to me that a production bike off a Florida Yamaha dealership beat the Works machines of the time on a Gary Bailey built Daytona track. Them it was raffled off to the spectators. I wonder if that bike exists today or was run into the ground and left to rust away behind a Florida shed somewhere.
