How did the first ride go?
First ride was awesome! I wrung its neck all day and I probably over did it a bit because I was sore for more than a week haha.

I've been busy with work and being sick with the flu. I'll post up the videos soon.

Wow been away for a month and a half and everything has changed in the forums. How do I get this moved into the Bike Builds section ?? I see a few in there that used to be in Race Shop...

Have some updates with the bike too, Gotta rebuild the front wheel its all buckled, I came into a deep rut with too much speed and got catapulted straight through the corner but the bike stayed wedged in the rut and and bent the wheel sideways, I think the rim is still save able but I need to re build the whole thing. Im going to post some ride videos up soon and get some decent photos of it taken.

Ive also had trouble with the tank graphic, it bubbled up and started turning brown almost straight away after I applied it, I know they will always bubble up because the fuel leaks through the plastic and affects the glue thats why they have vent holes in them, but I've had a few bikes and its never happened this quickly and especially with a brand new tank.

The way I see it is I have 3 variables that could be the culprit.

1. Graphics. This Is the first time I've used this graphics supplier, print quality is as good as I've seen on anything else but the vinyl was a bit thinner than what I'm used to, they went on really nice though.

2. Belray H1R Premix. Always used Motul or Motorex, I noticed it has a really deep brown colour and even when its mixed @ 32:1 its sooo brown.

3. Clarke Racing tank. Once again, first time using anything other than an OEM tank. It should be all the same kind of poly but maybe their process is a bit different and the poly ends up being more porous or something?

Can anybody weigh in on this, I'll load some pictures up tomorrow night so you can see what I mean, its pretty bad. The graphics company where pretty cool about it, they sent me out a replacement set straight away with different venting, but I'm going to swap back to motul premix first and go through a few tanks before i apply the new tank graphics.

Could be a combination of all three, but I know graphics quality can definitely affect this. I replaced the main tank graphics with a custom local company on one of my YZ's and left small trim sections from a N-Style kit on there. Within 4-6 months the new graphics were as yellow/brown as the N-Style kit which had been on there for probably 1.5-2 years.

I wish I had joined this forum and seen this post a while back. I just restored a 2007 RM 125 that I bought for $1000. I need to cut the number plates down. What do I use to cut? I was thinking of my pneumatic cutting tool, then wet sanding? I updated front end to RMZ. Any help??

Yeah if I was going to cut mine I'd use an air saw. I hear people saying to use a hot knife but I think that would leave a melted edge. if your going to cut it don't just cut the bottom corner off on the same angle as the seat base like ive seen a few times. this one looks well done.

Thanks,
Before I got your reply, I had already used my air saw. Looks pretty good. I need wheels next:

F*$%K me guys should I just give up on Bike shops or what? Try to help the local guy and get stuffed around for 3 weeks now just to get a set of spokes and nipples for the front wheel so I can rebuild it and go riding... Going to have a build update coming soon. just waiting to go riding so i can get some Go Pro footage happening...

Slosh my man! When you did the brake clevis mod, did you need to modify the pin? I'm looking at the Fasst Co. Black one for a YZF, and the tapping is easy enough, but did you need to modify the pin/brake lever at all? Hammerhead Brake Tip install went flawlessly thanks to your input!

No you don't have to modify the clevis and pin or the lever itself, just tap out the thread in the clevis to M8.

No worries happy to have helped haha.

You can also just buy a clevis for a 2004 KX250, it works without having to make any modifications at all.

Ok so this bikes sorta just sat for a while, I got a little bit disinterested with it for a while there mainly because I discovered the frame is totally fingered. I took the frame guards off so I could wash it one afternoon after a ride, and I noticed the powder coating was starting to bubble up from underneath like rust coming through on both sides of the main frame rails and a few other places. I figured its just the powder coating failing because the stooges that ripped me off with coating the frame put it on way too thick and it was blowing out all over the place. I decided to change the transmission oil and while I'm down there laying on the floor drinking the oil I notice the lower frame rail rusting bad, so I grabbed a screwdriver to scrape it off and the screwdriver goes straight though the tube. I pretty much lost my shit and put it on the stand and its sat there ever since basically.

So I calmed down about a week later and started thinking about the RM again, I thought I might be able to fix it but I can't trust it now so I started looking for a new frame. Man and I'm thinking I never see RM125's come up for sale let alone a frame. Any way I found one in NSW for $100, ended up paying another $100 to get it here, its an 05 frame but aside from the rear brake reservoir mount its the same frame.

So now I gotta rebuild this thing again, But it does give me an opportunity to do things a bit better. I wasn't totally happy with my weld on frame mounts and how I finished the welding on the HPSD mount. Definitely not going with powder coating for this rebuild, I want to get it zinc plated.

Sorry to hear about your frame dude, that's the sort of thing that keeps a guy up at night!

I have an 02' and bought an 05 master cylinder for the rear when I was building the bike - and it did not bolt up to the 02' frame. The 05' Master is in my garage still, PM me if you need it - we can sort something out....

Cheers - and have fun on the switch-over.

Ok so the replacement frame I have is no good to me, I was about to start cleaning it up and I noticed that the foot peg mounts are different, started looking closer and could also see that the suspension linkage mount on the lower frame rail is totally different also, I did do some research before I bought it and somehow I must have thought 05 is same frame as 06 - 09. turns out they are not, very similar but different in important ways. Must have been on drugs that day...

Any way. I'm pissed off as hell and I want to kick the bike into a corner, mainly because once again I lead myself astray and didn't learn from previous lessons!!!!!!!! and I've never seen a frame rust out so bad, the previous owner did say he only ever rode it on the beach but he must have ghostied it into the ocean a few times for it to do this.

You must have bought a 2001-2003 rm 125 frame thay was advertised as a different year.

2004-2007 rm 125 and 2004-2008 rm 250 use the exact same part number for the link arm and linkage knuckle.

2003 and back used a different style linkage.

Also your mounts for your rear master cylnder on the frame your bought are different then your white frame. Again 2004 to 2007 rm125 and 2004 to 2008 rm 250 used a newer style of rear master cylnder.

That frame you bought has the mounts for the older master cylnder thay has the remote plastic resivour that holds the brake fluid. That clip on the frame is what holds that.

Give k Dubb a shout on here. He will chime in in the rear master cylnder differences. He purchase a 2004 and up rear master cylnder and could not get it to mount on his 2003 rm 125 project bike.

End of the day. 99.99 percent sure you have a 2003 frame.

My understanding on the frame geometry is 2004 rm 125 frame was slightly different then 2005-2005-2007 rm 125. In 2005 and up the simply shifted the peg mounts 10 mm further back and shorten the rear brake length for better ergonomics. Prob to match the tighter triple clamp offset that was introduced 2005 and up.

Look for a 2005 frame and don't give up!

Nice detective work - I've battled with rear brake lines due to this exact issue/mix-up and I totally missed the mounts for the frame mounted reservoir (in the picture posted by slosh).

That is definitely an 01-03 frame.

When you get another 04-07 frame (to go with your existing linkage of course), your current rear braking equipment should totally be compatible.

Gutted to see your issues, we all know the heart ache these things can cause - rest easy, many wide-open, berm smashing days ahead - will make this whole dilemma a distant memory Tongue

yep def not an 05 frame. I had multiple RM's back when they were new. I last had a modded 04 and it was a ripper. But the 05 and up frame was a bit better.

Keep looking and dont give up.

Yeah stupid me, should have been a bit more vigilant but I saw what I wanted to see when I scrolled onto it on eBay. The hard part is that round here you never see RM125's come up for sale let alone 06 - 09 models and see even less frames. They are a rare bike to start with.

last night I bought a donor frame, it will be on its way from america next week I guess. From the pictures it has the right style foot peg, rear brake master cylinder and linkage mounts to suit my bike, Ad says and VIN says its a 2004 model with is conflicting against all of the info K-dubb has posted in this thread about the frame generations and year models. But with this style pull rod linkage mount it can only be the last generation frame. Any way looks like I can finally finish this bike again.

The replacement frame arrived this week from Claifonia. The only difference I can see is that it has an older style CDI mount on the steering tube but it's going to get cut off to make way for the HPSD anyway. The lower frame rails have copped a bit of a hiding but at least it's all steel and no big rust holes like mine. I don't know if I should fix them or just run it. I think I'm going to get this frame nickel plated.

Can't start on this for a little while as I've broken my ankle pretty bad and will be a few more weeks before I can get around good enough to start working on bikes again but we will see. If it's not one thing it's another I guess
