Opening round of the European series
After a couple of French races team Monster Energy Bud Racing Kawasaki was in Italy this weekend, for the opening round of the European 250 Championship. Both Tristan Charboneau and Marshal Weltin qualified for the races, while Kim Savaste missed it for his racing come back after his back injury at the Motocross of Nations last year.
In the European series the riders have not so much time to discover the track and work on the bikes settings, as they only have one session to qualify on Saturday morning with 20 minutes of free practice and 15 minutes of timed practice. With a maximum of 10 laps to post a good lap the task was not easy for our riders, and both Marshal and Kim failed while Tristan posted a seventh position in his qualifying group. The last chance race ended with a team’s battle, as Marshal passed Kim in the last lap to take the last qualifying position.
With their first race on Saturday evening and the second one Sunday mid day, the riders raced both motos on a different track. Tristan was the strongest of our duo, and started the weekend with a ninth position on Saturday; coming back from eleventh to fifth in the second heat, he had a technical issue and retired in the last lap. With the last gate pick Marshal had a really bad position and had no space to go in the first corner: he went outside the track and as he didn’t come back on the track at the same place he was later disqualified by the officials. On Sunday he started in the pack, coming twenty second after the opening lap; nineteenth at mid race, he then overtakes many riders to cross the finish line in eleventh position.
Next weekend the team will be in Valkenswaard (Netherlands) for the second round of the European 250 and the opening one of the European 125.
Tristan Charboneau: “Qualifying was not so bad with the fourteenth gate pick, and in the first moto I got a decent start. The track was mainly one line on Saturday and it was difficult to pass, I came back ninth and was not super pumped with this place. Sunday the feeling was much better on the track and I came back to fifth when the clutch failed in the last lap.”
Marshal Weltin: “Qualifying was tight, everyone was so close with time but unfortunately I had a couple of bad lines and that cost me some seconds, it was a problem this weekend. I had a tough last chance qualifying race but qualified in the last lap to get the last gate pick. It was embarrassing for me as I had such high expectation coming to this race. Next week we’ll race in the sand, I come from Michigan and I’m used to ride in sand but it will be more technical as always but I’m excited to go there.”
Kim Savaste: “I expected to be a lot better, and I’m disappointed to miss the qualification even if I rode better in the last chance race; I made some passes during the race and was qualified until the last lap, when Marshal passed me. Just a shame as I’m always better in the race than in timed practice sessions, next week it will be different in Valkenswaard even if there’s a lot of fast guys in the European series.”
