How has this guy been able to stay at the top (minus 2 years with injury) and stay in his stride while JS7, Reed, RV, have all either retired, or aren't winning?

Is it the calmness of the GP's? His training? I didn't really give a damn bout the GP's but always somewhat kept up with the fast guys on top.

Yeah, just look at the schedule the US guys run with SX and the Nationals compared to the MXGP schedule. Just a quick look at the MXGP schedule and I count roughly 16 off-weekends during their season, compared to 4 between the SX (1 off-weekend) and MX (3 off-weekends) schedules.

That has to have a lot to do with it.

I think Everts did that for "only" 9 consecutive years....

MUCH easier schedule. No this isn't bashing the GP guys. Their riders are just as good as the AMA ones, and vice versa. The grind the AMA guys go through though is crazy.

I would imagine they spend as little time as possible in the various locales. They likely arrive on Friday, practice/qualifying race Saturday, race Sunday and leave Sunday afternoon/night.

So that's really not that big of a deal, for the riders at least.

I would say it's more to do with no supercross cause when you add in all the other races the GP guys do the schedule is not actually THAT much easier.. It's obviously easier but in those 'off weekends' they are usually running some sort of National title. Again those title races are not as intense as the GP's or the US nationals but still..

I guess you'd say in the US almost every weekend is a weekend of consequence and that's gotta be tiring

The European year is almost as hectic as the US.
Most ride the GPS, off weekend testing, new model testing, International warm up events, Country championships and some even do the European Supercross events.

Funny. I was just thinking about Cairoli(and Everts) this morning and wondering why he(or they) wouldn't jump the pond after they won it all 3 or 4 times in a row. But I don't really hold it against them because it works both ways.

He is just a straight up badass. These MXGP riders are underated. I have only seen AC race in person once and that was 2010, 7 years ago at the des in Colorado but he was impressive. He is very fast, very smart, and very talented.

If he was such a straight up badass (which he is outdoors) everyone knows the biggest prize in racing is a Supercross title. Which in 14 years he hasn't attempted once, if he wanted to he would have had full factory backing. He chose not too. That'll always be a knock against him. Tortelli, Pichon, Albertyn, Vullimen, Roncada, Bayle etc all had the balls to try. No shame in being afraid or knowing your place I guess.

He spent one full month in Socal in January 2011, based in Temecula, he practiced a lot on all local tracks and attended several Sx races, but he soon realized he didn't like the american lifestyle at all.
He had several offers on the tale for next season, but he just decided to pack up and fly back to Italy.
You just have to accept and respect that.

Actually from march till end of september the schedule is much tougher. 16 GPs and in the off weeks nationals. Roughly 25 race weekends.

Off course then they have november-february with almost no racing.

Although the GP schedule isn't as hectic, these guys race domestic series in between GPs so during the "season" they are just as busy.

I would put it down to three things:
No kids/family unit, everyone thats had kids can attest how your mindset changes (its no longer just about you)
No supercross, that series can derail a career fast
A more substantial "off season" reduces burn out

*Forgot to add, AC is badass and just loves racing his bike
