I saw a guy have a probably life changing crash this past weekend. Along with a couple of broken bones and a gash in his side, he suffered a brutal concussion and had to be air lifted out from the track. His cheapo Fly helmet did not hold up too well (I don't know if it was a Kinetic or another model but it was one of the sub-$140 models). I wish I could have got a picture of the helmet after the crash. F2 Carbon is the bare minimum I'd consider.

The Fly helmet not "holding up well" can be a good thing. Helmets are evolving in such a way, that they are designing them to dissipate as much enerrgy as possible to the helmet, in efforts to lessen energy transfer to whats inside.

Interestingly enough, last night I suffered my first concussion wearing a Shoei VFX-W. A minor concussion but still bonked my head pretty damn hard and barely remember being at the track at all (starting to feel much better this morning). Pulled the padding out and the shell has no visible cracks inside or out and all of the padding looks fine. I wonder if it would have been worse if I was wearing a cheap helmet. I have heard people say that helmets are a one-time use type of thing as in after a hard hit they should be replaced. Is this true? Mine has no visible damage other than some exterior scratches.
I think the converse may be true in this recent situation you described above. Has Shoei updated to the "softer", more MX appropriate speeds? If not, then you probably wouldnt see anything, which may not be a good thing. If so, do you have that model? That is one of the problems with older, harder shell designs. Its hard to assess damage. I dont think they have changed shell design, however, I dont know for sure.

Typically I would agree with this.........but articles like these with independent safety testing makes me wonder......Chinese manufacturers scoring better than Arai?? How long can the Arai's and the Shoei s of the world cling to the notion that the consumer will think they are getting a better helmet if they pay more so let's skip the innovation and focus on BNG.....

I think that was on the Bell helmet sign at shop i rode out of in the mid 70s.

Helmets are so far behind the curve ,look at how far bikes, hell, everything hs developed since 74 when i first raced.

Helmets are still basically beer cooler with hard cover to paint up real cool.

I would really recommend finding the best helmet safety wise rather than price tag wise, you cannot put a price on your safety or health, while bones can mostly be repaired your head and brain are a lot more difficult! Even if you can't ride for a few more weeks to save to get the safest helmet it is worth it!

Stumbled upon this ad when picking my lineup this week and instantaneously thought about this thread. If you haven't picked something just yet it's a great deal. With the gift card my dad got for a RacerX subscription I just checked out for the grand total of $123.00. Good luck on your search.

This isn't 1995, there are cheap helmets that are good. The whole "your head is worth more than $XXX" isn't a thing anymore. Look at Scorpion helmets, you can get a VX35 for around $170 and they're amazing helmets.

But did anybody stop to think that maybe the OP's brain might in fact only be worth $150?

What are brain donations paying these days? I ask because I heard people are just dying to donate.

On the hunt myself and aside from the discounted higher end models from fox or fly that have mips, I've noticed scorpion has an inexpensive dual wow model that is supposed to be light, and just1 has a raptor model that has triple eps (triple?) that is pretty inexpensive.

That statement would be true 10 to 15 years ago, but now a days even the good "budget" helmet are good quality safe helmets. As I said before the new Bell MX-9 with MIPS for $199 kind of proves that. Wait till the 2018 MX-9 models come out, I bet guys will be able to pick up a 2017 model for under a $150.

I have a Moto 9 Flex and my son's buddy's MX-9 is impressive quality for what it cost IMO.
