Do yourself a favor and throw that filter cage in the trash! I dropped $2,500 rebuilding my bike last month because the needle on the cage backed out and got sucked through my engine. Thank God the engine went on a small jump and only my ego was bruised.

Don't wanna bomb your thread with a heap of pics of my bike but have a look at my build thread. I got almost every aluminium part on the bike done in black bar the swingarm, rear suspension rocker linkage, Cylinder and a few other things. Theres a fair few pics on there, they start at around page 4 or so if you don't wanna go through the whole lot. 2008 RM125 Rebuild.
Thanks, and what a good job you did on that bike!
Good to see how the anodizing will turn out on different materials

I really appreciate your input here, last thing I could handle would be an totaled engine. I'm gonna have a look at that cage and see what can be done to make it safe! Thanks again

You could always just cut the mesh out of the stock cage, I done it on my 14 yz250f its easy as but you just gotta make sure you get all the little fine bits off mesh off the cage

Cheers mate, the anodising seems to be holding up really nicely, its as good as the aluminium itself. The whole bike is getting a total tear down and rebuild again around a new frame, the original frame is rusting from the inside out. I've already got two rust holes in the lower frame rails. its only got 6.7hrs on it now but its a good chance to see how the anodising holds up during maintenance when i put a new ring on the piston, its already miles better than paint or powder, if I could anodise a steel frame I would.

These 2 showed up on the internet for good money,
so i couldn't resist. It's so addictive buying stuff, and it's so hard to draw a line ..... you simply "need" all the things that is out there, otherwise it doesn't feel like you built it to what you wanted it to be. The one thing that is certain: it's a true money pit

Put the outer fork legs in a lathe, a 5-minute-job I thought...... not so. First I needed to use real coarse sand paper, then finished of with wet 400 grit paper.
Really good anodized from the factory obviously!
Now they are of to be black hard-anodized.

I would totally leave those outers the way they are. They look awesome! More susceptible to corrosion etc., but so what! Very unique. Maybe clear coat them?

Yes it would look nice, but they will not hold up for roost if they ain't hard anodized. But they will become black so it will look really cool I think!

I don't think anybody would have enough time in the day to keep polished tubes shiny and nice. I've polished 3 sets now and even after one week of being polished you can see oxidation in the surface. Bare aluminium like that is a chore that nobody needs.

Just a tip for next time you do a set in the lathe. Get yourself a decent billet of aluminium and machine it .05mm smaller in diameter than the ID of the seal carrier in the outer tube and around 5mm long to create a mandrel of sorts. You grab the billet in the 3 jaw lathe and the tube will slip fit over it and you can use the tail stock with a centre to keep in line.

I'm going to try chemical stripping the anodising off the outer tubes for the next set I'm going to do, would save so much time.

Black-Smoker, regarding your choice of components for the build: The Athena 290 kit will do you proud with the stage 2 came and ported head...just have to get the fuel mixture right. The Carillo rod is an excellent choice. you can't buy a better rod in my opinion. I've run an Athena 290 kit for 3 seasons in my GNCC bike, a 2004 RMZ250. Always made terrific power, never had any sealing issues or gasket problems (perhaps the poster with gasket issues had a cylinder head that isn't straight). Two things about the 290 kit though that you must not ignore under any circumstances...the maintenance intervals for replacing the piston, and warming the bike up thoroughly. If just run it without keeping up on piston wear, eventually you'll lose a piston and cylinder, if not a rod as well, which usually takes the cases with it. As for warming up the engine thoroughly, if you don't warm it up correctly, you'll get an odd 4 corner wear pattern in the cylinder (it corresponds with the edges of the the gussets for the wrist pin in the piston...) Sweet build though!

You could clear anodize those upper fork tubes. Black will look really nice, but clear anodize will set the bike further apart from the crowd.

Thanks for your inputs guys, but regarding the colors this will be an extremely black bike i can assure you
The shopaholic in me couldn't resist these for half the retail, and the old ones where due for the trash can anyways.

Im loosing control regarding the details I think, the two visible cylynderhead bolts getting black (as the rest of every bolt and nut)

A box that I slowly fill with sandblasted parts to be anodized or powder coated

Engine almost finished, waiting for gaskets and valve shim-kit

The chain tensioner is getting black anodized soon,
doesn't look nice like that

Good work! Love that engine stand, got to build one like it. Was going to get the Fly racing one but it doesn't look to work well with assemble and disassembling cases.

Thanks, this engine stand is from pro works and it worked mostly perfect. The only thing I did was to add an support for the bottom of the engine case, because when I put the cases together I had to take off the big locking bolt that hold it in place which made the case lose on the stand.

Looks good, impressive work. If you wonder what happened with your YZ250 engine, it landed in this Ebay frame...

Cool

So it was you who bought it, judging by the picture it got a nice home then! Do you have the bike here in the build section? Searched but couldn't find anything

No, not yet. I hope I have pics showing the build, but I feel with yours, and others, I hesitate making a buzz. Smile

Valve clearance is sorted, clutch is put together. Just the covers left and chain tensioner.
