Malcolm is a good rider but I don't think he does this because he loves the sport. He does it because he can't do much else IMO. He has endless resources b/c of his brother and his experience. Malcolm has raw talent but I don't think he'll ever have the desire to win like James used to. This reminds me of kids who grow up to lawyers because there dad is a lawyer. They don't really like law but they do it because they have the resources and family experience to get them by and a name to piggy back off of.

I don't think that's a fair assessment at all. Is it an easier decision to go into moto, given his ties and natural talent, perhaps. But to say he can't do much else is pretty unfair and a lame thing to say.

In my opinion....if Malcolm really ( and I mean really ) took his training seriously , and then learned to calm down a bit and minimize mistakes , it could take him to another level. He pushes past his limits sometimes , and I think it's why he makes so many mistakes. And the way he " bulldog's " his bike around , he seems to use a lot of energy.

It's his rookie year in the 450 class , so I'm cutting him a bunch of slack. He has a lot of skill and speed to work with....just needs some fitness and fine tuning.

I imagine that he has some of that "if James can do it so can I" in his thinking sometimes. James could do impossible stuff, and get away with it because of his skill set...and maybe Malcolm just can't. Maybe that's a reason he throws it away sometimes just pushing things.

No. There is not only the physical side of going 20 minutes but there is also the mental/emotional side. That is much harder to get perfect then the cardio side of things. Some of these races are going 24-26 laps. I doubt Malcolm can go 26 laps mistake free at his top 3 speed the entire time. That's what it takes to podium.
I'm not sure, but was this the first main he didn't fall in? If it was, even though he dropped anchor, it was good to see him not on the ground.

When you are riding in damage control it is tough to ride forward. Here is how I see his race craft progressing:

He will eventually get the holeshot and lead a little. He will tighten up and fall back to 5-10. Then progressively he will do this more and more...and get comfortable leading laps.

I agree 100% with your first (technically second) sentence but I also think that being fit and knowing that you are fit goes a long way on the mental/emotional side that you mention. I don't think that Aldon, specifically, is the key but I do think that a top level trainer would transform him. He has all of the things that you can't teach. Regardless, it would be very interesting to watch.

I agree. Certainly being fit does help on the mental side. But that's not the only part of the mental game.

Malcolm has been around racing his whole life. His older brother is one of the best to ever ride a motorcycle. Surely he's learned a thing or two from watching that. And I'm sure James could help him put a program together. Don't think they need Aldon for that. Not saying that it wouldn't help. But there is a lot of knowledge in that family on winning races/championships. Surely big james and little james are trying to work with him and have a program in place. But is Malcolm following that program? Does he do it every day? He's basically had about 8-10 months to be physically ready for the start of SX and he's not ready. So I don't think that's anything Aldon can fix. Hope that makes sense.

You can lead a horse to water...but you know the rest. Many times we've heard Malcolm say that he had to make a choice between being a professional fisherman and a professional motocross racer. You have to be "all in" to do this stuff. I think Malcolm is fit, he is talented & has the mental ability to win races...hell, he just won a damn championship!! But, how badly does he want it now? He's racing guys who are 110% all in, every week...week in and week out. They live, breath and fart motocross. How willing is Malcolm to do this? Can he do this? I don't have a clue, but it would seem that he may still have part of his brain out on the water on a Ranger boat, casting lures...
Wayne Gretzky had to choose between the NHL and the MLB. Fishing has nothing to do with it.

Yep....with his talent and raw speed. Baker could certainly make him better.

I think Aldon could turn him into a regular podium guy.
