Last time a top 10 points rider did not make the main?

Due to something other than injury? Simply did not have the speed. What about top 5?

I know there have been mechanicals so kind of curious about that aspect as well.

Was having a conversation with a guy I was sitting next to at the Atl supercross that flew in from Africa and he was asking what is the point of the heats and semis for the top riders. He was thinking they had no risk of not making it.

I thought there was a recent time Rv2 didn't make it.

I know there are Vital statistics nerds that know this right away. Or at least I hope.

RV did fail to make the main in Jacksonville one year I believe. Not sure which year though.

Classic right hand 90 after start straight. Have we seen one of those since?

I can't really remember anyone not making the main because he didn't have the speed.
But after going down or after a bad start, must have been several guys over the years

Roczen missed the main once when he was battling for the title with Tomac (almost cost him his SX title)
And RV that one time

RV was fortunate that Stew had issues that night as well or he would have likely lost the red plate....

Should always be a promoters option to put at least an extra 2 riders on the gate at every round.

Didn't they institute a provisional rule to prevent this from happening to the top ten in points?

They had something written into the rules some years ago about top 10 guys getting a one time qualifying exemption. I want to say Reed benefited from it. My rememberer might be about to dns though.

I recall RV benefiting from a provisional (I think), and Weimer being in 11th in points when he could have benefited from it.

I remember a couple years ago Dungey fell in the last chance qualifier, got up, took the last spot, then went on to win the main??

Yes RV was sick in toronto 2014 and got into night show without practicing/qualifying. Being top 10 doesn't just put you in the main though.

Yeah, it was Reed, but I don't remember the year. He crashed in his heat, got hurt, and didn't want to take the chance on not qualifying through the LCQ so he used his provision. He still had to line up for the LCQ, but as soon as he crossed the gate, he pulled off. The part I don't remember at all, though, is what happened to the last guy who qualified through the LCQ.

Jacksonville 2011 season. RV missed. He was up 26 points (I think) on JS7, missed the main and James was (unintentionally) taken out by Michael Byrne in the first turn. It was a crazy night with a full moon and all. That season as a whole was pretty crazy. There were 5 contenders for the majority of the season that got within striking distance of the title. RV, Dungey, JS7, Reedy and Canard (rookie season).

Yep I remember being there. Can't believe it was already that long ago. Such an intense night.

I believe the qualifying rule is only for timed qualifying i.e. not making the top 40 due to a crash or mechanical.

So we're looking for somebody who raced in the LCQ while they were top ten in points, and didn't make it. Got it now.lol
Nobody but Pourcel comes to mind, but he missed the first race, where technically nobody is top ten in points.

Yeah. Needle in a haystack. Just wondering if it happened.

There were only 20 man mains then, so they had extra gates and made it 21 guys that race.

It was 08 Detroit. He crashed in practice on the on off and used his provisional to get into main. They did away with that rule. Now it's the way RV did it, just provisional to qualify.

And I'm sure there has been a top ten guy just not qualify in the past 2-3 years but I could be wrong.
